‘Barcelona out to prove they are better than Bayern Munich’

Barcelona will be eager to show everyone that they are better than rivals Bayern Munich when the two teams face off in the Champions League on Wednesday, manager Xavi Hernandez said. Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Bayern in last month’s Group C fixture, a result that Xavi said was not a true reflection of the team’s talent. But having won only one of their four matches in Europe this season, Xavi wants his team to show their true worth at Camp Nou on Wednesday. “We have to show ourselves that even if we are knocked out (of the Champions League) we are a good team and we can compete against the best teams out there,” Xavi told a news conference on Tuesday. “That game in Munich was a disgrace because we deserved much more. That was an accident because we lacked the final touch. Even though...

Chelsea have three league fixtures, two Champions League games and a League Cup tie before the World Cup in Qatar begins on Nov. 20. “It’s difficult and it’s sad because as players you want to go to the World Cup, but we have this schedule where we have to play for our club and do our best,” Azpilicueta told reporters on Monday. “We are fighting a lot for player welfare because the schedule is crazy....

No goal-line technology at Benfica v Juve due to stadium works

The Champions League clash between Benfica and Juventus on Tuesday will be played without goal-line technology due to works at the Portuguese club’s stadium, UEFA has said. Benfica commissioned works at the Estadio da Luz “without the knowledge of UEFA and UEFA’s goal-line technology supplier”, European soccer’s governing body said in a statement on Tuesday, which made the goal-line technology system dysfunctional. The works included replacement of the giant screens, installation of LED lighting and a new sound system, Benfica said on their website. “Unfortunately it will not be possible to replace and install a new system in time for the match and therefore the match will go ahead without the use of goal-line technology as per the UEFA Champions League regulations,” UEFA said. NEW DELHI: Pakistan's former star pacer Shoaib Akhtar "wants" Virat Kohli to retire from T20 Internationals as he feels that the Indian batting maestro should not put his "entire energy" in the shortest format. Akhtar lauded Kohli after his unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in Sunday's T20 World Cup match helped India clinch a thrilling four-wicket victory at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground. "According to me, he played the greatest innings of his life against Pakistan. He played like this because he had the self belief that he will do it. Virat Kohli smashed a stunning half-century to lift India to a four-wicket win on the final ball against arch-rivals Pakistan in a classic T20 World Cup match on Sunday that unfolded in front of a massive Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd. With India chasing 160 to beat Pakistan in their Twenty20 World Cup opener in Melbourne, Kohli smashed two of the tremendous sixes of his career to leave his side needing 16 runs off the final over from Mohammad Nawaz. But the game-changing moment in the encounter occurred when India required 28 off the last eight balls and Kohli launched his onslaught against Haris and hit a couple of sixes- one back past the bowler’s head and the other over fine leg. “One of the best T20 games with an epic innings by Virat Kohli,” said former England captain Michael A...

‘Kapil Dev is the greatest’ says Hardik Pandya

When former India opener and selector Kris Srikkanth said that Hardik Pandya reminded him of Kapil Dev, Hardik Pandya cut in to say, “He [Kapil Dev] is the greatest!” In a friendly post-match interaction on Star Sports, Srikkanth prefaced his comment by saying “I am not comparing Kapil Dev and you; just talking about the kind of impact” Pandya says “He is the greatest. Thank you sir!” Moments ago, prodded by Srikkanth, Pandya would use a Tamil slang: “Kalakara machaan! (You rock mate!). Immediately, Srikkanth replied, “Nee daan daa Kalakara (its you who are rocking!) I’am a great fan of you!” A few months back, on a SG podcast, Pandya had talked about the Kapil comparison, saying he hasn’t even achieved even 5% of what Kapil did. “I have very respectfully denied that (comparisons ...

BENGALURU: Puneri Paltan produced an exemplary performance to beat Jaipur Pink Panthers 32-24 in their Pro Kabaddi League match on Tuesday. Aslam Inamdar's 13 points proved to be the big difference between two sides that were jostling for control throughout the game. The two teams matched raid for raid and tackle for tackle for most of the opening period. Paltan's Inamdar was prolific in the early stages, his speed and agility troubling the Pink Panthers' defence on every raid. Soon enough, his raids started adding up, and in the last five minutes of the first half, Paltan started pulling away. In the last few seconds of the first half, they effected the first All Out of the evening, going into the break with a 17-11 lead. The Pink Panthers came roaring into the game in the second perio...

With just a couple of days remaining for Indian men's opening game in the new season of FIH Pro League against New Zealand, Manpreet Singh & Co have been sweating it out hard at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar where they will be playing their first game post the Commonwealth Games. But even as they begin a new season, the 7-0 defeat against Australia in the final of the Birmingham meet will be on the back of their minds. It was another depressing defeat that the Indian team had to endure against the Aussies. Even during Tokyo Olympics India had lost 1-7. Speaking of the loss at CWG, India head coach Graham Reid, who won the FIH Men's Coach of the Year Award earlier this month, said, "No one wants to lose in that fashion and especially to Australia again. I think we were a bit intimid...

Stoinis raced to an unbeaten 18-ball 59, having reached his half century in 17 deliveries. But Finch, who usually looks to attack, seemed to be batting on a different pitch. He was at the nets on Saturday, finessing his batting ahead of Sunday’s ICC T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The practice arena is an enclosed space with high walls surrounded by a little road that skirts up. For the fans and media personnel, a good view was all about getting to the...

Giant Pakistani who troubled Smith impresses Kohli, Rohit

Mohammed Irfan Jr. was a bit disappointed after India’s two-hour net session at the Sydney Cricket Ground. “Virat Kohli chaale gayein? Rohit bhai ke saath selfie le liya, Kohli ka ek mil jaata,” the six feet six inch right arm pacer’s sadness was palpable while speaking to PTI. The Pakistan-born pacer, who has made Sydney his home for last three years, was one of the highlights of the Indian team’s net session ahead of its T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands. Bowling with a wrong-footed action, Irfan Jr. looked like a right-arm prototype of former international bowler Sohail Tanveer. Because of his height, the 27-year-old’s natural length was back of good length area and he effortlessly got the deliveries to rear up. Dinesh Karthik was troubled by the bounce but he earned praise...
