Aur kuch sade layak (Anything else for us to do): Asif Ali’s throwback after defeating India in Asia Cup

Pakistan duo Asif Ali and Mohammad Nawaz were all smiles after defeating India by 5 wickets on Sunday. “Aur kuch sade layak,” said Ali which translates to “Anything else for us to do?” and Nawaz points out to him and said, “Remember the name Asif Ali.” For the uninitiated, this harks back to a time when Ali produced a match winning knock against Afghanistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup when he hit 4 sixes in an over to steer Pakistan to victory. After that explosive knock, Ali had taken to Twitter to thank people who were with him during hard times. He tweeted, “Aur koi hukam Pakistan? Shukriya @isbunitedaur woh sub log jinho ne mere per belief rakha mere mushkil waqt mai. #PakistanZindabad” (Any other command Pakistan? Thank You to those people who kept their belief in me during hard time...

Asia Cup: Pakistan edge out India in a thrilling chase

A late, final twist it seemed. Mohammad Rizwan, he of unflinching spirit and cool-eyed ruthlessness, seemed to be taking Pakistan to victory. But what are India-Pakistan encounters in T20s, from their twin games in the inaugural ICC World T20, without late drama? Pounding hearts, sweaty fingers and jangling nerves. With Pakistan needing 35 runs off 20 balls, Hardik Pandya ejected Rizwan for a pugnacious 71 off 51 balls with a short ball. Hope rose among the Indian section of the audience, fear plunged among Pakistanis. The match could still drift either way. The next few minutes were more dramatic. India sought a review for a caught behind off Asif Ali, off the bowling of Ravi Bishnoi. The players and the crowd, chewing nails, pulling hair, stroking chins, waited impatiently for the ve...

Arshdeep spills & thrills; Rohit walks the stock-strike; Hooda does a Matrix Neo; Rizwan’s scramble-hit

It could well have been real tight – who knows it might even have been game set match India – had Arshdeep Singh taken the catch of Asif Ali in the 18th over. Pakistan required 32 runs in 15 balls when Asif got a top edge on the slog sweep off Ravi Bishnoi and the ball swirled to Arshdeep at short third man. He was all cool about it, perhaps too cool, as he tried to pouch it nonchalantly. And it popped out of his hand, to his horror. And when he saw Asif Ali looting Bhubaneshwar Kumar for 19 runs next over, it might have broken a lesser man. Not Arshdeep. He produced a stunning last over to take the game ever so close. Defending just 7, he took out Asif with a yorker in the third ball to push the game to 2 from 2. But redemption wasn’t on cards on the night, and a low full toss was hit...

‘When I left Test captaincy, only MS Dhoni messaged me’: Virat Kohli

“When I left Test captaincy I got message only from MS Dhoni and nobody else,” Virat Kohli has said. “Lot of people have my number but only he had called. There are some connections with are genuine and it has some security. If you want to give me suggestions give me one-on-one.” Virat Kohli has never shied away from showing his appreciation of his former India MS Dhoni. Whether it is tweeting near midnight about his IPL innings or an even random Instagram post going into a big tournament. And now, the 33-year-old who resigned from his role of India’s Test captain earlier this year has told that Dhoni has also been the one to reach out to him even during his most difficult days. Speaking in the press conference after India’s defeat to Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super 4 stage, Kohli shared...

Before last-over heartbreak, Kohli warms Indian hearts with slice from the past

THE CROWD rose from the seats — as they often do when Virat Kohli walks in to bat or when he approaches a milestone. They wanted to get a fuller view of him. Then, Kohli whipped Pakistan pacer Mohammad Hasnain’s 150 kmph thunderbolt over the midwicket boundary for a stunning six to bring up his fifty. The fans in the stands scrambled for the ball. They were reluctant to throw it back, as though they were holding a slice of Kohli. It was Kohli’s first six and his last boundary. That stroke bore the full stamp of Kohli-ness. A rich bit from his past had stumbled on to the present. And yet, it was a mixed day for India fans. They were pleased to see Kohli’s return to form but couldn’t celebrate an Indian win. Kohli’s 60 from 44 balls took India to 181 for seven but that didn’t prove enough...

Rashford double as Man United end Arsenal’s 100% start

Marcus Rashford scored twice as Manchester United made it four wins in a row and ended Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday. Gabriel Martinelli looked to have given Arsenal a 12th- minute lead after finishing off a swift break but the effort was disallowed following a VAR review. Martinelli forced two saves out of United keeper David De Gea as the visitors began to dominate but it was the home side who drew first blood through debutant Antony. The Brazilian winger, signed from Ajax last week, was found on the right by Rashford and coolly drifted a shot into the far bottom corner. Manchester United vs Arsenal: Rashford double as Manchester United end Arsenal’s 100% start in Premier League | Football News – Times of India

MANCHESTER (England): Marcus Rashford struck twice as Manchester United made it four wins in a row and ended Arsenal's perfect start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday. A high-tempo, top quality game was decided by two Rashford goals on the break after Bukayo Saka had cancelled out United debutant Antony's opener. Arsenal remained top of the table on 15 points thanks to their opening five wins and while they will be disappointed to have ended that run, this was far from the kind of meek loss against Big Six opponents they have produced in the recent past. United look to have found their belief again after starting the campaign with dreadful defeats by Brighton and Brentford and Dutch coach Erik ten Hag's approach is bringing results. Antony was han...

Manager Brendan Rodgers takes blame for Leicester City slump | Football News – Times of India

BRIGHTON (England): Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers says the team’s poor results this season are down to him as he deflected blame from his players following the 5-2 Premier League loss at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Leicester defended poorly and gave up possession too easily in another demoralising defeat that left them with a single point from their opening six games having lost their last five matches in a row, their worst start to a season since 1983-84. Next up is a home match against Aston Villa. "You can only work hard," Rodgers told BBC Sport. "We need to pick the players up for another home game next week, which will be a big opportunity for us. If we can sustain the game for longer and not make mistakes, we can build towards getting a result." The defeat will ...

Rahul’s ‘strike rates are very, very overrated’ comment has come back to haunt him

Press conferences are generally dull and mundane. Unless a Virat Kohli comes out all guns blazing against the BCCI top brass or current India coach Rahul Dravid, who has forever been considered the good boy of Indian cricket, hesitates to say a four-letter word which starts with s. Most of the time, the words said at the presser backfire. In the ongoing Asia Cup, Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud said Sri Lanka doesn’t have a world-class bowler before his team lost the game by two wickets. Bangladesh had only themselves to blame for their ill-disciplined bowling, conceding eight wides and four no-balls to ruin the early good work of their batsmen. Earlier this year, during the West Indies series, when asked about Virat Kohli’s form, India captain Rohit Sharma nonchalantly asked: “V...

EPL: Brighton thump struggling Leicester to pile pressure on Rodgers | Football News – Times of India

BRIGHTON (England): Alexis Mac Allister scored twice as Brighton & Hove Albion deepened the crisis at Leicester City with an emphatic 5-2 Premier League victory at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. Leicester have one point from their opening six games and despite taking the lead inside a minute, were outplayed in a performance that will add to the substantial pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers after a summer of discontent at the club. Kelechi Iheanacho put Leicester in front and Patson Daka drew them level at 2-2 before halftime, but an own goal from defender Luke Thomas and strikes from Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard and Mac Allister, one from the penalty-spot and the other a superb free kick, sealed victory for the home side. Mac Allister was also denied what would have been a conten...

Premier League asks referees body to review VAR calls at Chelsea and Newcastle | Football News – Times of India

The Premier League has asked referees' body PGMOL to review the decisions made by video assistant referees (VAR) in Chelsea's 2-1 win over West Ham United and Newcastle United's goalless draw with Crystal Palace, British media reported on Sunday. Chelsea came from behind to beat West Ham on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, after a 90th-minute Maxwel Cornet effort for the visitors was ruled out after the VAR decided Jarrod Bowen had fouled Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. In the game at St James' Park, Newcastle thought they had taken the lead six minutes into the second half through an own goal from Tyrick Mitchell, but it was ruled out after a VAR review found that Joe Willock had fouled Vicente Guaita. West Ham manager David Moyes described the decision as "ridiculously bad" and Newcastl...

Who is Mohammad Hasnain?: The 150kph Pakistan pace tearaway who never had it easy

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Hasnain has never had it easy. Back in 2019, still a teenager, it was his ability to bowl 150 kph that fast-tracked him into the Pakistan 50-overs World Cup squad. Things didn’t go as Pakistan would have liked – the boy who they called the next Shoaib Akhtar was soon called for chucking. Earlier this year, he bounced back after ICC recommended action correction work and was an instant hit on the English county circuit. So when Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad was announced, the pacer was included in the squad. And when new ball bowler Shahnawaz Dahani got injured, Hasnain was included in the playing. With his inclusion, Pakistan had two young 150 kph pacer – Naseem Shah being the other- in their bowling line-up. They were up against India’s seasoned batter Rohit Sharm...
