Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka eliminate sloppy Bangladesh in match of fluctuating emotions

The end was anticlimactic for a wildly emotional match. Ashita Fernando and Maheesh Theekshana scampered for a two that brought Sri Lanka within a run of beating Bangladesh and sealing a Super Fours spot. That’s when the umpire signalled a no-ball, robbing an occasion for spontaneous celebration. The moment they realised they had won, Fernando and Maheesh hugged each other and waved frenziedly at the dressing room. The teammates came rushing, leaping and punching the air, gesturing to the Sri Lanka supporters to raise the volume level. Bangladesh supporters looked utterly shocked and in utter disbelief of how they had lost a match they had no business of losing. The bowler, Mahedi Hasan, crashed to the turf, beside a disconsolate Mushfiqur Rahim. Captain Shakib Al Hasan smiled a wistful...

Asia Cup: Sri Lanka make Super 4s after thrilling two-wicket win over Bangladesh | Cricket News – Times of India

DUBAI: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh went into Thursday's virtual knockout game, having dealt cheap shops at each other in the buildup. The two teams, nicknamed The Lions and The Tigers, were probably venting out their frustration after the 'newbies' of world cricket Afghanistan pushed them to a corner in the last five days. At the end of the day, after 39.2 overs of play, Bangladesh bowling cracked under as tournament hosts Sri Lanka chased down a daunting 184-run target with two wickets in hand to make it to the Super 4s. It was a battle of egos for both team. Both teams turned out to throw punches at each other on the field. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka had a lot riding on him the moment he had announced Bangladesh 'a far easier opponent' than Afghanistan. Shanaka anchored the chase wi...

The Escapologist: How calm HS Prannoy pulled the rug from under Loh Yew’s feet

Loh Kean Yew is freshly an ex-World champion, now playing at the Super 750 Japan Open this week. HS Prannoy has no World’s medal to show. If reputations were stamped on the visage, you wouldn’t be able to tell who was who, if you dropped in for their Round 2 match at Osaka. Neither would you know looking at the four scorelines – Loh leading 17-11 and 20-17 in the first set, and 14-6 and 17-12 in the second – as to who eventually won. For HS Prannoy donned the sport’s trademark Resting Badminton Face, that inscrutable, expressionless look that robs from the opponent, the smug reassurance that he’s ahead. Through this summer of successful forays into top events and the Thomas Cup triumph, HS Prannoy has frustrated opponents by keeping badminton’s non-provoked, unfazed face, while turning ...
