Virat Kohli scored his 31st T20I half century to match Rohit Sharma’s record, and Suryakumar Yadav smashed 60 off 26 balls as India posted a total of 192 for 2 in the Asia Cup match against Hong Kong here on Wednesday.

India captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 21 as India made a slow start. Hong Kong’s bowlers surprised the Indian batsman with tight bowling. Young pacer Ayush Shukla took the wicket of the Indian skipper. K. L. Rahul was also left frustrated by the Hong Kong bowlers after getting out on 36, taking 39 balls to get there.

Kohli reached his 50 in 40 balls after a run-a-ball spell in the early half of his innings. After the fall of Rahul’s wicket, he built a strong partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, who helped raise the run rate on arrival. Kohli hit three sixes on his way to an unbeaten 59, while Suryakumar hit six sixes and six fours to boost India’s total.

Their scores are the two highest T20I scores by Indian batsmen at the Dubai International Stadium. The two batsmen scored 78 runs in the last five overs.

Kohli’s 31st fifty puts him level with Rohit Sharma for most half centuries in T20I world cricket.

Hong Kong wins toss

Hong Kong captain Nizakat Khan won the toss opted to bowl against India. Fresh from his all-round exploits in the five-wicket win over Pakistan, India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya was rested, and Rishabh Pant returned to the playing XI as the team’s only change.

“Hardik is rested considering how important he is for us, Pant comes in,” Rohit Sharma said at the toss. Hong Kong retained the same team that played in the qualifiers.
