Neither side had conceded a goal in the league this season but Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for champions City in the fifth minute, ghosting in and catching the Newcastle defence flat-footed before finishing from close range. City should have gone two up in the 16th minute when Phil Foden attacked down the right, but he chose to shoot from a tight angle rather than squaring the ball to Haaland and the chance was wasted. The home side levelled through Miguel Almiron in the 28th minute as he bundled a pinpoint cross from Allan Saint-Maximin into the net before enduring a nervous VAR...

For World Championships medallists Srikanth and Sen, Tokyo 2022 will be a tougher challenge

The lull after the storm is upon Indian badminton. And this World Championships starting Monday, might be the first indication of the fading out of a sporting success story of the last decade where an Indian medalled at either the Olympics or World Championships every year since 2011. In its most dire forebodings, India is staring at possibly its first no-medal finish at Tokyo 2022 World’s in many years. And on Lakshya Sen’s massively taped shoulders – the trapezius and deltoids, rest the flickering hopes of keeping that streak alive, should he reach the semifinals to assure a medal, and then some more. Any other unexpected surprises will merit raucous jubilation such are the draw-dependent projections. Tokyo, a year after the Olympics, is also unsurprisingly when the entire gamut of in...

Government proposes to end CoA mandate in SC application, accepts all FIFA demands | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In a desperate move to get the FIFA ban on AIFF revoked, the central government on Sunday moved an application in the Supreme Court, seeking an end to the "mandate" of the Committee of Administrators (CoA), as demanded by the world governing body. The sports ministry's move, a day before a crucial hearing of the top court, can be seen as an attempt to salvage the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, scheduled to be held in October. The world body had on August 15 imposed a ban on All India Football Federation (AIFF) due to "third party interference" and said that the women's age-group showpiece "cannot currently be held in India as planned". The government in its application has virtually accepted all the demands made by the FIFA, including ending the tenure of the SC-appointed C...

Mendy’s error prompts Chelsea collapse in 3-0 loss at Leeds

A bad error by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy prompted a collapse by Chelsea in a 3-0 loss at Leeds on Sunday featuring a first Premier League goal by American winger Brenden Aaronson. The late sending-off of center back Kalidou Koulibaly completed a miserable afternoon at a lively Elland Road for Chelsea, which fell to a first loss of the season. It was Aaronson who applied pressure on Mendy after the Senegal international received a back pass in the 33rd minute. Mendy took a slightly heavy touch and tried to go around Aaronson, who dispossessed him and walked the ball into the net to make it 1-0. Rodrigo glanced home a header from Jack Harrison’s free kick in the 37th minute and the roles were reversed for the third goal in the 69th, when Rodrigo arrived in the area to meet a cross with a m...

Manchester United vs Liverpool: Bench Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, says Wayne Rooney

Just a couple of days before Manchester United take on Liverpool in a highly anticipated Premier League clash, Red Devils’ icon and record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney has called for manager Erik ten Hag to drop both Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford from the team. Writing for his Sunday Times column, Rooney said, “I wouldn’t play Cristiano Ronaldo, and I wouldn’t play Marcus Rashford. If I was in Ten Hag’s position my main concern would be getting energy on the pitch, and United’s failure to recruit a No 9 means they relied on Ronaldo against Brentford, even though he hadn’t trained a lot with the team. He looked like he needs time to get match fit.” Rooney said that Ronaldo does not look match fit and called on United to grant the Portuguese talisman his transfer exit wish. “He has al...

Should pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Shaeen Afridi be used more sparingly to reduce workload?

Bowling fast is the most physically-taxing pursuit in cricket, which makes quality practitioners of the art rare gems. It is terribly tempting for captains to put them into service frequently, as they are often the sharpest weapons at their disposal. But the pressure it puts on various parts of the human anatomy always makes fast bowlers susceptible to injuries. Jasprit Bumrah and Shaheen Shah Afridi are two of the best speedsters in the current game, but neither will take the field when India and Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup next Sunday. While the leader of the Indian attack is out with a back injury, the latter is nursing a right knee ligament injury. While the batsmen in the two teams may breathe a sigh of relief, it takes some star power from the marquee clash. It also emphasises ...
