Amidst the gloom, Manisha provides cheer as she becomes the first India to play a Champions League match

Eight years ago, a PT teacher of the Government Middle School in Muggowal, a village in Hoshiarpur, saw a girl playing barefoot with a bunch of boys and scoring girls for fun. He took her to an academy, where the young player whose speed and finishing skills stood out was moulded as a player even as the family battled financial pressures to sustain her career and overcome prejudice. On Thursday night, that girl – Manisha Kalyan – became the first Indian footballer to play in a UEFA Champions League match. The moment came in the 60th minute of the match between Cypriot champions Apollon Ladies, for whom Manisha plays, and Latvian top flight club SFK Riga. The India forward came on as a substitute for Cyprus’ Marilena Georgiou at the Makareio Stadium in Engomi. The 20-year-old’s team won ...

Kiran, once a javelin gold medlist, picked for India women’s tour of England

During her university days, Kiran Prabhu Navgire was into track and field. She won around 100 medals in different athletics events, including a javelin gold in 2011-12 inter-varsity games. Cricket was her second sport, despite the fact that, while growing up, her idol was MS Dhoni. It was only in 2016, at the age of 22, that she realised her potential in cricket. Now five years down the line, she was named in the T20I squad for next month’s women’s tour of England. “She was playing a university game at Azam Sports Academy in Pune. I saw her smashing sixes for fun. Her power-hitting left me amazed. I and our president Dr PA Inamdar went to her after the match and asked her at which club she is training,” her coach Gulzar Sheikh tells Indian Express. Inamdar and Shaikh were gobsmacked wit...

Antim has the final word

A blatantly regressive village custom straddled her with the terribly rude name Antim (last) because as the fourth born daughter, the Haryana family from Baghana (Hissar) was supposed to not welcome any more female children after her birth. In a stunning punch to patriarchy, 18-year old Haryana wrestler Antim Panghal became the first Indian woman wrestler to be crowned U-20 world champion with a 8-0 win over Atlyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan in world U-20 wrestling Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. The world-beating Antim Panghal now has the final word on what constitutes glory, pride and honour. Named Antim by her parents Ram Niwas and Krishna Kumari, the stunning grappler had earlier steamrolled past Natalia Klivchutska of Ukraine with a 11-1 win in the semi-final on Thursday to book her p...

‘We are being punished for no fault of ours… There’s a huge amount of uncertainty within our group’

Ashalata Devi is the captain of the Indian national woman’s football team and also leads Gokulam Kerala, who have qualified for the AFC Women’s Club Championship in Tashkent, but are stuck there amid uncertainty over whether they will be allowed to play in the wake of FIFA banning the All India Football Federation. The former AIFF player of the year describes the predicament she and her teammates are facing, and why it’s important for footballers to have a say in how the game is run in the country. I’ll be honest. In all these years playing football, I have never paid attention to what the federation did, or did not do. I haven’t judged them or thought about their actions. I played football because I derive enjoyment from it. I haven’t played for money or any other motive – anyway, wher...

1st Test: England will not abandon ‘Bazball’ despite heavy defeat | Cricket News – Times of India

LONDON: Captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum promised to persist with England’s new attacking approach to Test cricket despite being handed a heavy innings defeat on Friday in the first Test against South Africa. The new England skipper and coach have adopted an attacking approach to the Test arena, dubbed "Bazball", and have chased down impressive targets to win Tests against New Zealand and India in the last two months with a swashbuckling batting style and aggressive bowling spells. But they were emphatically thumped by an innings and 12 runs at Lord's in the first of a three Test-series, as South Africa’s bowlers ruled supreme, restricting England to 165 in their first innings and then dismissing them for 149 on Friday. Stokes, however, said there would be no change when th...

That didn’t work against South Africa and its hostile pace attack. England lost its 20 wickets in the match in a total of 82.4 overs. MUNICH: Borussia Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke on Friday quashed speculation linking the Bundesliga club with Cristiano Ronaldo, saying there was "no contact at all" between the parties. "I love this player, it'd certainly be a charming idea to see Cristiano Ronaldo play at Signal Iduna Park. He is one of the greatest players the world has produced," Watzke admitted to reporters. "But there is no contact at all between those involved. So you should stop talking about it." Dortmund, who lost star striker Erling Haaland to Manchester City earlier in the summer, had been linked with the 37-year-old amid uncertainty about his future at Manchester United.
