As Canada celebrates Amarveer’s 125-kg gold, father gives credit to Indian genes

At Balbir Dhesi’s home in Surrey, Canada, a silver mace has place of pride in the living room. The Dhesi, a former Greco Roman wrestling champion, had won the mace at a dangal [wrestling bout] in India. Sharing the space with that mace is eight others won by his sons Amarveer Dhesi and Paramveer Dhesi at bouts organised by the local Indian community. Jostling for the space are the international medals won by Amarveer. The Dhesi brothers grew up listening to their father’s feats in the Freestyle and Greco Roman styles in India, as well as the Canadian local wrestling circuit in the 1980s. On Friday, Amarveer, 26, won the gold medal in the men’s 125-kg category after a win by fall (9-2) against Pakistan’s Zaman Anwar at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. An year later to the date, the 23-year-old paid tributes to his mother as he finished on top of the podium at ongoing Commonweath Games in Birmingham bagging the gold medal with a win over Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam. There were no big moves but Punia, with better stamina, outlasted Inam 3-0, winning his first point from a push out, second on passivity of the Pakistani before completing the win with another push out point. Liverpool stumble, Tottenham impress in EPL openers

While Liverpool made a stuttering start to the English Premier League, Tottenham showed it might be ready to take another step forward under Antonio Conte. Liverpool had to come from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at promoted Fulham on Saturday, largely thanks to new signing Darwin Nunez, after a performance that Jurgen Klopp conceded was well short of the team’s standards. Tottenham also conceded an early goal but came roaring back to earn a 4-1 victory at home against Southampton after a dominant display that hinted that Spurs are well gelled after a full offseason under Conte, who took over as manager last November. Chelsea also had a winning start but in less impressive fashion, holding on for 1-0 at Everton after Jorginho netted a late first-half penalty. Newcastle, Leeds and B...

CWG wrestling: After anxious moments off the mat to ‘make weight’, Ravi Dahiya shows swagger on it to win gold

“I am my favourite. I am,” Ravi Dahiya would say in an Insta video recorded by United World Wrestling, on the morning of his Commonwealth Games final where he brought India’s 4th of 6 wrestling gold at Coventry. It was unintentional swag, it was authentic though. “Arre, I couldn’t think of anyone. They asked, so I answered,” he would say later, even as American Jordan Burroughs topped the tally. Not for India’s silver medallist from Tokyo, and the most watchable grappler since Sushil Kumar. On the mat, he picked eight points from the snaking phitle, and then finished a technical superiority reaching 10 points a few seconds later, all achieved without much fuss. It was in the morning though – when not under the spotlight, where he sauntered in and swagged out, and stood with his hand on ...
