In a brief statement, the federation – currently being run by a Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) – did not name the individual. However, they said he has been asked to return to India ‘immediately’ to join the investigation into the issue. In a joint statement released hours later, the state associations affiliated with the AIFF said the concerned individual was a coach of the team, while requesting the CoA and the AIFF to ‘initiate an independent enquiry after filing an FIR.’ The U-17 team is currently in Norway as a part of their exposure trip to Europe ahead of the women’s World Cup, which will ...

Diamond League: Neeraj Chopra rewrites national record again

Neeraj Chopra’s quest to break the 90-metre mark remained unfulfilled but the 24-year-old Indian javelin throw star came within six centimetres when he broke the national record for the second time in a month with an opening throw of 89.94 metres at the Stockholm Diamond League. The Olympic Champion finished second to world champion Anderson Peters but apart from the national record, Chopra will also be pleased with the result in Stockholm because it was the first time he had finished in the top three in a Diamond League event. In his season opener at the Paavo Nurmi Games, Chopra had rewritten his own record with 89.30 metres. Chopra’s 89.94 metres was also a meet record before Peters bettered it in the third round with 90.31 metres. It was a typical start from Chopra at the Olympic S...

Why hasn’t Prannoy won a Super title yet?

There is the small matter of winning on the big days, for HS Prannoy. “I actually believe he’s a big-match player,” insists Anup Sridhar, with whom Prannoy trained for 10-12 weeks in the 2021 autumn before the Bali swing. The 29-year-old, ranked 21 in the world, isn’t fazed by the big names, as all his scalps, Chen Long, Lin Dan, Chong Wei, Viktor Axelsen, reveal. On Thursday at the Malaysian Super 750, it was World No 4 Chou Tien Chen, whom he cleaned up 21-15, 21-7 – courtside, coach Siyadatullah had a sniffling smile, and later said: “He attacked so well from 11-7 in the second, Chou didn’t score a single point. It was actually the disadvantage side, but his attack was excellent as he kept the shuttle down.” On Friday – and the rest of the weekend hopefully – Prannoy will need to ke...

Long jumper Jeswin Aldrin not included in World Championships squad

Weeks after the Commonwealth Games snub, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) left out long jumper Jeswin Aldrin from the World Championships squad despite him achieving the qualification mark of 8.22m. AFI, which announced the list of 22 athletes for the event slated in Oregon, USA, in just two weeks, cited an “ankle twist” and a slump in recent form as reasons to leave out Jeswin. National record holder long jumper Sreeshankar Murali, and Muhammed Anees will represent India in the long jump leaving the third slot empty. “Jeswin is not there. There is no oversight. He has met the qualifying standards. Have you seen his last three performances? 7.82, 7.69 and 7.51 so that is what it is. If the performance is consistently going down, the selection committee in its wisdom has thought t...

Change in opposition doesn’t change our approach: Stokes

England skipper Ben Stokes says they know what it takes to beat India but insisted it’s more than just winning a game since they are looking to reshape Test cricket with their style of play. Under Brendon McCullum’s guidance and Stokes’ aggressive captaincy, a ‘new-look’ England swept New Zealand 3-0 in their last series at home, just days back. India are leading the series 2-1 and the 31-year-old all-rounder expressed confidence of squaring the series. “We still obviously know that we need to win this game to draw the series. But you know as I said at the end of last week that, at the moment it is bigger than results, it is bigger than you know, what happens on the field, there is more to it. We obviously want to win every game we play but it is bigger than that,” Stokes said on the ev...

What should be India’s XI for Birmingham Test against England?

Now that Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Birmingham Test after another positive Covid test, what should be India’s playing XI at Edgbaston on Friday? India have decisions to make about their team composition throughout the line-up: who should open along with Shubman Gill in Rohit’s absence, who should bat either side of Virat Kohli at No 4, whether to play two spinners or one, and consequent upon that, who should be the third or fourth fast bowler. Who will open with Gill? Shubman Gill hasn’t played Test cricket since December, but being the only specialist opener left in the squad until Mayank Agarwal’s late arrival, it appears likely that he will be one of the openers at Edgbaston. India’s Shubman Gill plays shot. (AP) India have had to rush Mayank Agarwal to England, and the ...

IND vs ENG 5th Test: Dukes ball is too soft, loses shape too soon and doesn’t swing much

There is something wrong with the Dukes ball this season, the brand of the ball to be used in India’s one-off Test match against England. They haven’t swung much as they have gone soft rather quickly and been changed numerous times. Stuart Broad has compared it to a “rolled-up plasticine”, the commentators have groaned on air about its shape, Kane Williamson’s men have repeatedly complained to the umpires about it, and it has been changed numerous times in a game over the last county season and in the England’s series against New Zealand. In a county game between Durham and Glamorgan this year, the ball was changed 11 times, including five in one day. Dilip Jajodia, the owner of the company that manufactures the Dukes ball, says though they haven’t identified the definite cause for the ...
