IPL 2022: GT now guaranteed top slot, 7 teams vying for 3 remaining spots – All playoffs possibilities in 11 points | Cricket News – Times of India

With the IPL 2022 entering its last week there are seven remaining matches in the league stage now and 128 possible combinations of results.
TOI looks at each of these possibilities to calculate the chances of individual teams making it to the playoffs. Both matches played on Sunday – the first between GT and CSK and the second between RR and LSG have cemented GT’s position as the chart-topper. The first spot in the points table now belongs to GT and it still remains the only team to officially qualify for the playoffs so far.
RR’s win in the second match on Sunday means that LSG can also no longer top the points table. So far MI and CSK are the only teams that have been officially ruled out of the playoffs race and as of Monday morning, May 16, there are still three of the top four slots which remain open. Here is what the possibilities look like right now:
* Despite having two matches left to play, MI is out of reckoning for a playoff spot
* CSK have one more match but no chance of making the cut for the playoffs. Their last match however will be crucial for RR
*KKR‘s chances of making it to the top four have slightly reduced to 12.5%. At best it can now hope for a joint fourth position on the points table. And that spot too might be shared with three to five teams
*DC‘s chances of making it to the top four slots have also reduced to 43.8% and at best they can now hope for a joint second spot which it might have to share with three to four teams.
*PBKS is at par with DC with a 43.8% probability of qualifying and the best highest spot they can hope for is joint second position shared with three to four teams
*SRH‘s chances of finishing in the top four have reduced to 9.4% and at best they can now be joint fourth on the points table
*RCB‘s chances of making it to one of the top four slots have reduced to 75%. At best they can now be joint second – a spot that they may have to share with three to four teams
* RR, after Sunday’s win, has a 100% chance of finishing either second or third on the points table. But this doesn’t ensure qualification for the playoff stage as they can be a joint second with up to four teams or joint third with up to three teams
* LSG’s nerve-racking week continues. Sunday’s loss ensures that they can no longer top the points table. At best they could be certain to finish joint second or joint third. They might share the second position with up to four teams and the third position with up to three teams
* GT, also in its first IPL season, remains the only team that has an ensured qualification and after Sunday’s matches has fixed its position as the topper of the points table
* In short, bet on LSG, RR and RCB joining GT in the playoffs, with PBKS and DC having a relatively small chance of displacing RR or RCB in the playoffs race. KKR and SRH can still make it, but have a much lower probability
How we calculate these probabilities:
We looked at all 128 current possible combinations of results with 7 matches remaining now in the league stage. We assumed that for any given match the chances of either side winning are even. We then looked at how many of the combinations put each team in one of the top four slots by points. That gives us our probability number. To take a specific example, of the 128 possible result combinations currently, RCB finishes first to fourth on points in 96 combinations. That translates to a 75% chance. We do not take net run rates or “no results” into consideration because predicting those in advance is impossible.

Come back for our updated predictions Tuesday (May 17) morning, which will take into account the result of Monday’s match.
