Chelsea being sold to Dodgers owners for sports record $3 billion

The forced sale of Chelsea is ending after attracting the highest price for a sports team of 2.5 billion pounds ($3.1 billion) from a consortium fronted by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly. There are still potential stumbling blocks to the sale of Roman Abramovich’s asset, frozen by sanctions against the Russian oligarch. The British government has to approve the terms and ensure Abramovich does not profit, even as he appears to want to divert the proceeds to charity. Hours after buyout terms were agreed and announced, Boehly had a dispiriting introduction to life as an English Premier League investor when Chelsea threw away a two-goal lead to draw with Wolverhampton 2-2 on Saturday. Boehly was watching at the team’s Stamford Bridge stadium in west London that needs some of th...

Bayer Leverkusen reaches Champions League, Union stuns Freiburg

Patrik Schick scored twice to shoot Bayer Leverkusen into the Champions League with a 4-2 win at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Union Berlin stunned Freiburg 4-1 to dampen its Champions League hopes. Union secured at least a place in the Europa Conference League for the second season in a row after already achieving its best Bundesliga season. Sixth-placed Union, which was promoted only in 2019, has a two-point lead over Cologne in their tussle for Europa League qualification. Cologne lost at home to Wolfsburg 1-0. Also, second-placed Borussia Dortmund defeated already relegated Greuther Fürth 3-1 away in Stefan Leitl’s last game as Fürth coach. Leitl, who led the team to promotion last season, is leaving after 3 1/2 years in charge. Leverkusen was made to work hard for its r...

Nice ultras clash with riot police ahead of French Cup final

PARIS (AP) — There were minor clashes between riot police and ultras from soccer club Nice outside a main train station ahead of the French Cup final on Saturday. Around 450-500 Nice ultras, some wearing balaclavas, were grouped outside Gare de Lyon, where trains arrive in Paris from the southern city of Nice. The group then started quickly roaming the streets outside Gare de Lyon as ringleaders shouted instructions to move. Dozens of riot police moved to intercept them and prevent possible clashes with Paris Saint-Germain hooligans who had earlier been in the same area. There was a brief clash with Nice’s ultras and the riot police on the long Avenue Daumesnil at around 3 p.m. The ultras then made their way back into Gare de Lyon and were escorted by riot police toward trains taking th...

Carlos Alcaraz beats Djokovic to reach Madrid Open final

Rafael Nadal one day. Novak Djokovic the other. The list of victims of Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz keeps growing. And so does the hype over tennis’ newest sensation. After defeating his idol Nadal in the quarterfinals on Friday, the 19-year-old Alcaraz rallied to beat top-ranked Djokovic 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (5) after more than 3 1/2 hours on Saturday to reach the Madrid Open final. Alcaraz converted on his third match point to clinch the victory in front of a raucous home crowd on the Caja Mágica center court. A win on Sunday will give Alcaraz his fourth title this season, the most of any player. He will face defending champion Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas, who met in the late semifinal on Saturday. Alcaraz, the youngest player in the top 10 since Nadal in 2005, has won this...

IPL 2022: Lucknow Super Giants go atop as KKR bowled out for 101

Until the Hulk aka Marcus Stoinis decided to plunder Shivam Mavi in the 19th over, Lucknow’s innings was in threat of falling for a par total on a sluggish pitch. They were 142 for 4 in the 18th over but it took just five balls to change it. On a pitch that was holding up, where previous evidence from Andre Russell, who wasn’t given his full quota of four overs despite a good spell, was clear that you can mix up the pace but have to hit the pitch to make the ball hold, Mavi strangely chose to float his balls fuller. Bad mistake. Stonis likes to shuffle to the off, and tee off the on side and he walloped three sixes and though he got out, Jason Holder smashed two more as 30 runs came that over. They would end up with 176 and KKR would fall way short. With Stoinis, it’s the big shoulders,...

IPL 2022, Lucknow Super Giants vs Kolkata Knight Riders Highlights: Quinton de Kock’s 50, bowlers take LSG closer to playoff berth with crushing victory over KKR | Cricket News – Times of India

PUNE: Quinton de Kock laid the platform with a commanding fifty and his pacers then terrorised Kolkata Knight Riders to record a crushing 75-run victory for Lucknow Super Giants which put them on top of the table with an IPL play-off berth being a formality now. For last year's runners-up KKR, eight points from 11 games with a deflating negative run-rate now puts them closer to the exit door with lacklustre performance and unimaginative captaincy combining for what has turned out to be a disastrous season so far. Cheteshwar Pujara continued his impressive form in the ongoing season of the County Championship, notching up his fourth successive hundred in the County Championship Div 2 for Sussex against Middlesex on Saturday. Coming into bat with Sussex at 6/2, Pujara battled Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi in a fiery spell and even counter-attacked the left-arm pacer with an uppercut that flew over the ropes for a six. His punch off the backfoot was equally sublime as Afridi was forced to change his length early in his spell. Fraser-Pryce clocks world-leading 10.67 to win 100m in Nairobi | More sports News – Times of India

NAIROBI: Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce posted the fastest 100m in the world this year as she clocked 10.67secs to win in Nairobi on Saturday. The 35-year-old, who has won eight Olympic medals including silver in Tokyo last summer, was a comfortable winner after 18-year-old Namibian sensation Christine Mboma pulled up suddenly before collapsing to the track. Fraser-Pryce's winning time was close to her personal best of 10.60, set in Lausanne in August 2021. "I have been doing this for 13 years. Even time I run I set new records, it's incredible," said Fraser-Pryce, who could only finish second in her season-opening 200m race in Kingston in April. Only four other women have run the 100m faster than Fraser-Pryce's time on Saturday - Americans Marion Jones (10.65) and Carme...

IPL 2022, PBKS vs RR: We have a lot of depth in our batting, says Shimron Hetmyer | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Rajasthan Royals batter Shimron Hetmyer on Saturday attributed his team's batting depth being the reason for a clinically successful chase of 190 against Punjab Kings in an IPL match on Saturday. On a difficult-looking pitch, Rajasthan Royals got off to a flier after Jos Buttler made a quick 16-ball 30 before Yashasvi Jaiswal laid a solid platform with his spectacular 41-ball 68 as they scripted a six-wicket win with two balls to spare. FUERTH (Germany): Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt scored twice in a 3-1 victory over relegated Greuther Fuerth on Saturday to seal second place in the Bundesliga with one match remaining. Brandt put the visitors in front, scoring on the rebound after Fuerth keeper Andreas Linde had blocked a shot from Raphael Guerreiro. The Germany international then struck again for a personal-best ninth time in the league in the 72nd, charging into the box to fire Dortmund back in front only two minutes after the hosts had equalised. Dortmund made sure of the three points with substitute Felix Passlack's deflected effort in the 77th to move up to 66 points. PBKS vs RR: Jaiswal grabs his second chance with 68 off 41 against Punjab Kings

Playing his first match after a month, Yashasvi Jaiswal set up Rajasthan Royals’ chase of 190 with 68 off 41 at the top of the order. Devdutt Padikkal’s struggle kept Punjab Kings in the hunt, but Shimron Hetmyer’s late blows brought in a six-wicket win and took RR to 14 points. Jaiswal nails comeback Jaiswal had been dropped after scores of 20, 1 and 4, and had spent more than a month on the bench before his comeback last afternoon. How much this innings meant was clear from his celebration for his fifty – even as the RR dugout stood up to applaud, Jaiswal held his bat in his left hand and slowly pumped it with determination, and then proceeded to do an elaborate, slow-motion fist-pump with his right hand. All along, the celebration seemed to be self-congratulatory; he was barely looki...

Celtic virtually seal Scottish league title with Hearts win | Football News – Times of India

GLASGOW: Celtic virtually guaranteed a 52nd Scottish league title by coming from behind to beat Hearts 4-1 on Saturday. Ange Postecoglou's men move nine points clear of Europa League finalists Rangers, who have three games left to play. But Celtic's 22-goal superior goal difference means they realistically do not even need another point to seal the title. Rangers' title defence will mathematically end should they fail to beat Dundee United on Sunday. The match mirrored Celtic's season as they started slowly before moving through the gears. Hearts inflicted one of only three league defeats on the Hoops on the opening day of the season and threatened to delay their title party when Ellis Simms smashed home after just three minutes. Postecoglou was plucked from Yokohama Marinos when Eddie ...
