IPL Auction 2022: KKR take home Shreyas Iyer for Rs 12.25 crore, Punjab Kings bag Shikhar Dhawan for Rs 8.25 crore | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India opener Shikhar Dhawan became the first player to be sold on day one of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction in Bengaluru on Saturday, bought by Punjab Kings, but it was Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who spent the most in the early exchange to take home Shreyas Iyer.
The Punjab franchise shelled out Rs 8.25 crore for the left-handed batsman. Royal Challengers Bangalore showed interest in Dhawan initially, bidding alongside Delhi Capitals. But Punjab eventually clinched the deal. Dhawan’s base price was Rs 2 crore.
But in the fierce bidding war for Shreyas, it was KKR who got him for Rs 12.25 crore. He could go on to lead the side as KKR are looking for a captain as well. Shreyas led Delhi Capitals and could be KKR’s best bet as skipper.
Also in the bracket of Rs 2 crore base price was veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was bought for Rs 5 crore by Rajasthan Royals.
Pat Cummins, considered one of the hottest foreign picks, fetched Rs 7.25 crore, which is almost a 50% pay cut from the last auction. He, though, will continue to play for the Kolkata franchise, who had decided not to retain him ahead of the auction.
Punjab added another player from among the marquee players in the form of South African pacer Kagiso Rabada.
The Punjab franchise, who entered the auction with the fattest purse, shelled out Rs 9.25 crore for Rabada.
