Nadal edges ahead of Federer, Djokovic in GOAT debate | Tennis News – Times of India

LONDON: The numbers do not lie. Rafael Nadal stands alone on 21 Grand Slam titles, breaking a tie with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the race to be crowned the greatest male tennis player of all time. The number of major titles is not the only factor used to determine where players sit in the pantheon but it is increasingly used as the go-to metric. Nadal played down his astonishing achievement following his gruelling five-set win over Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final in the early hours of Monday. The 35-year-old Spaniard said he did not care much whether his 21st title made him the best player in history or not. But many fans are captivated by the debate about who will ultimately emerge from the golden age of men's tennis on top, with each of the "Big Three" supported...

BENGALURU: Raiders Ajay Kumar and Pardeep Kumar helped Gujarat Giants beat Haryana Steelers 32-26 in the Pro Kabaddi League here on Monday. Their defenders had a solid game too, with the seasoned corner combination of Ravinder Pahal and Girish Ernak impressing. Haryana's much-famed defence had a night to forget with Surender Nada struggling in the left corner. The Steelers had just five tackle points in the entire match. International cricket is all about delivering and not grooming someone: Gautam Gambhir | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has suggested that India have to move on from their search for a fast-bowling all-rounder and groom them in domestic cricket instead of changing them quickly at the international level. With Hardik Pandya struggling with injuries over the past three years, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has tried out several players in the all-rounder's position in limited overs and Test format. To this, Gambhir told Sports Today, "If you don't have something, don't go for it. You have to accept and move on. Don't try and create something which you can't create, that is where the problem lies." "I have always believed that international cricket is all about delivering and not grooming someone. Grooming happens in domestic and India A level. When you represent ...

Medvedev will realise you can’t force fans to support you, says Karatsev

Aslan Karatsev couldn’t really spout a Dostoevsky or even summon a handy Meddy-ism, a la Daniil Medvedev, but he drew out the chuckles anyway. The World No 15 had just made the quarters of the 2021 Australian Open beating Felix Auger-Aliassime and was facing the press that was quizzing him intently on digging deep and other profundities. Russian tennis players are expected to lace ironies with dark humour, and humour with gravitas. The then 27-year-old, who made semis at Melbourne last year, though, would put a pin prick to the nice bubble. Recalling the interaction while playing at the Tata Open Maharashtra on arrival, Karatsev peals off: “So the journalist asked me, ‘What was your self-talk to yourself during the break at the toilet?’ He was expecting some special answer. But I said, ...

Why Medvedev says he would prefer playing in Russia over Wimbledon, French Open

After blowing a two-set lead over Rafael Nadal across five hours and 24 minutes in the Australian Open final, Daniil Medvedev began his post-match press conference with a long monologue. “Story of a young kid who dreamed about big things in tennis,” as he called it. He talked about his journey in the game since he’d first picked up a racquet when he was six, about wanting to play in Grand Slams against the best, about the moments of self-doubt over the years. He concluded with a stunning declaration. “From now on I’m playing for myself, for my family, to provide (for) my family, for people that trust in me, of course for all the Russians because I feel a lot of support there… if there is a tournament on hard courts in Moscow, before Roland Garros or Wimbledon, I’m going to go there even...

When Nadal’s Plan A didn’t work, he had Plan B, C, D…

The Spaniard haring along the baseline, and often six feet or more behind the paint, running around the backhand, finding improbable angles and lines, prompting awe among spectators and bewilderment in opponents. This style of play has worked wonders on clay – as evidenced by his scarcely-believable 13 titles at Roland Garros. But to pigeonhole Nadal as a one-trick pony would be doing great disservice to his skills and resourcefulness. He has won every Grand Slam at least twice, and judging by how he went about turning the tide against Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final, he has several arrows in his quiver, which he can employ with devastating effect. If one strategy isn’t working, he is quick to use another one and often equally adept at it. That 2️⃣1️⃣ moment#AusOpen • #AO...

One doesn’t need to be captain to be a ‘leader’ within a group: Virat Kohli | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India batter Virat Kohli has said that one does not need to be a captain of a team to play the role of a 'leader'. Earlier this month, Kohli stood down as India's Test skipper a day after the country suffered a 1-2 series defeat against South Africa in the three-match series. Last year, the 33-year-old had also stepped down as T20I captain and then he was removed as the ODI captaincy after the selectors wanted one leader for white-ball formats. "See, I think firstly you need to have a complete understanding of what you set out to achieve and whether you have achieved those targets or not. Everything has a tenure and time period, so you have to be aware of it. As a batter, you might be able to give more to the team, so take pride in that," said Kohli on an episode of 'Fireside...

At the moment Virat Kohli isn’t at his best, hopefully he discovers form soon: Ajit Agarkar | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has said that batter Virat Kohli is not at his best right now, but it would augur well for Team India if he ends up finding form sooner rather than later. Earlier this month, Kohli stood down as India's Test skipper a day after the country suffered a 1-2 series defeat against South Africa in the three-match series. Last year, the 33-year-old had also stepped down as T20I captain and then was removed as the ODI leader after the selectors wanted one captain for white-ball formats. "At the end of the day you're only successful as successful as your team is; and if you don't win, it eventually doesn't matter how great a player you are out on the field, it's not enjoyable playing in the team," Agarkar said on Star Sports' show 'Game Plan'.
