Raducanu survives Stephens test on Australian Open debut | Tennis News – Times of India

MELBOURNE: Britain's teenage sensation Emma Raducanu cleared a dangerous first-round hurdle at the Australian Open, seeing off experienced American Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 in a topsy-turvy contest on Tuesday. Raducanu, who rocketed to fame in September with a fairytale run to the U.S. Open title as a qualifier without dropping a set in what was only her fourth senior tournament, raced through the opening set in 17 minutes, leaking only four points. But former world number three and 2017 U.S. Open champion Stephens finally found her rhythm and range to take charge of the second set from 2-2, reeling off four games as errors began creeping in to 17th seed Raducanu's game. It looked ominous at that point for the 19-year-old Raducanu whose build-up to her Australian Open debut had har...

Rahul's media interaction was a clear indication that Ruturaj Gaikwad might have to wait for his turn and the pitch at Boland Park might prompt the team management to play both specialist spinners -- Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. "In the past 12-15 months, I have batted in various positions because that is what the team needed of me then and now with Rohit (Sharma) not being there, I will bat at the top of the order," the skipper informed ahead of t...

Sabalenka battles from set down to stay in Australian Open | Tennis News – Times of India

MELBOURNE: World number two Aryna Sabalenka fixed her early-season serving horrors to rally from a set down and power into the Australian Open second round Tuesday. The second seed from Belarus came into the season-opening Grand Slam low on confidence after self-destructing at two warm-up tournaments where her serve left her distraught. It got so bad against world number 93 Rebecca Peterson in Adelaide that she was reduced to sending deliveries underarm, at one point breaking down in tears. Across those two defeats, she threw down 39 double faults. She reduced the count to 12 against Storm Sanders on Rod Laver Arena to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, but with four in her first two service games it appeared she was in for another miserable night. Sabalenka, though, kept her cool and finally found her...

Asian Cup women’s football: Cop-turned-coach Dennerby aiming to guide India past group stage

The Swede laughs easily, speaks in a soft, comforting tone and says, with a smile, he is kind. “That’s what a lot of people tell me,” he grins. “That job gave me a different perspective on life…” On night patrols, Dennerby the policeman had brushes with hardened criminals, intervened in ugly family fights and even prevented suicides. In the mornings, after dealing with the real-world issues, coach Dennerby wouldn’t have the heart to yell at his players for merely missing a pass. “What is more important?” he asks, rhetorically. “That job changed me as a person.” For a fortnight, starting Thursday, the good cop will patrol the Indian women football team’s dugout in the Asian Cup. The continental championship, which is also a 2023 World Cup qualifier, will kick off on Thursday with a cla...

It’s laughable to point the finger at The Hundred for England’s Ashes debacle: Eoin Morgan

England ‘s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan has laughed off opinions suggesting that The Hundred is to reason why its Test team suffered a 4-0 Ashes defeat to Australia.
