PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty moved into the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain, on Tuesday.
Playing his first World Championships, 20-year-old Lakshya gave a good account of himself when he worked hard to beat world No.17 Kento Nishimoto of Japan in three games 22-20, 15-21, 21-18.
In the last-16 clash, Lakshya will play Kevin Cordon of Guatemala.
Sindhu’s victory was a foregone conclusion and the world champion demolished Martina Repsika of Slovakia in straight games 21-7, 21-9.
Eighth seeds, Satwik-Chirag were tested in the first game before dominating Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei in the second 27-25, 21-17. The Indians have themselves to blame as they were leading 20-17 in the first game, before a four-point burst brought their rivals back into the contest. However, the experienced duo did well to win two important points from 25-25 to win the game.
In the second, the Indians were in total control. From 13-13, they broke free and secured a 17-14 lead and then 19-16 before sealing the tie.
In the pre-quarters, Satwik-Chirag will play the winners of the match between Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Singapore and Joel Eipe and Rasmus Kjaer of Denmark.
