BWF World Championships: Prannoy stuns Angus in first round | Badminton News – Times of India

HS Prannoy shocked Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong 13-21, 21-18, 21-19 to join Kidambi Srikanth in the men’s singles second round of the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain, on Monday.
Unseeded Prannoy made a splendid comeback after losing the first game to beat the eighth seed. He will now face Daren Liew of Malaysia in the second round.
After losing the first game, Prannoy dominated his rival in the second. He started off with a 7-0 lead and never looked back.
In the decider, Prannoy was trailing 8-12, before he notched up three successive points to catch up with Angus. At 17-17, it was anybody’s game, but Prannoy kept his cool and won two big points at 19-18 to close the issue. In six meetings, this is Prannoy’s second victory against Angus.
Earlier, on Monday, the men’s doubles pair of Arun George and Sanyam Shukla went down to Ou Xuan Yi and Zhang Nan of China 15-21, 14-21. In mixed doubles, Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Juhi Dewangan were thrashed by Mathias Thyrri and Mai Surrow of Denmark 21-8, 21-4 while Utkarsh Arora and Karishma Wadkar went down fighting to Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann of Germany at 20-22, 16-21.
PV Sindhu, Srikanth and Lakshya Sen will play their second round matches on Tuesday.
