Rohit Sharma not picked for South Africa ODIs keeping in mind upcoming series, T20 World Cup: Chetan Sharma | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Chief selector Chetan Sharma on Friday said his committee did not want to take any chance with skipper Rohit Sharma for the upcoming three ODIs in South Africa as there are many important series and a T20 World Cup lined up in the coming year. After a chat with the white-ball captain, the selectors believed it would be prudent for Rohit to keep working on his rehab and fitness, instead of travelling with the team to South Africa. "This is the only reason we decided that he (Rohit) goes and do his rehab, work on his fitness, work on his muscles," Chetan said at a media conference after announcing the team for the matches against South Africa. Rohit, one of the finest white-ball exponents, was ruled out of the ongoing three-match Test series in South Africa after his old hamstring...

Three Liverpool players test positive for COVID-19 before Chelsea trip: Klopp | Football News – Times of India

Three Liverpool players and more staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the trip to Chelsea but it is too soon to ask the Premier League to postpone the game, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday. The league has postponed 18 games so far due to a mixture of COVID-19 outbreaks and injuries at several clubs, leaving them without enough players to fulfil fixtures. "We have three new COVID cases in the team and a few more in the staff, so it's not so cool at the moment," Klopp told reporters ahead of Sunday's game in London. "I'm not (able to reveal who tested positive) because we have to go through the whole process, PCR (tests), but you will see the day after tomorrow on the team sheet, it will be clear who is affected." When asked if Liverpool would have to ask for the ...

JOHANNESBURG: Former South Africa opener Alviro Petersen is shocked with Quinton de Kock's sudden retirement from Test cricket and feels more players might follow in the footsteps of the wicketkeeper-batter in the near future. At just 29 years of age and having played 54 Tests, de Kock announced his retirement from the traditional format at the end of the opening Test against India, which the Proteas lost by 113 runs at SuperSport Park on Thursday. De Kock would, however, be be available for ODIs and T20s in future. "To be honest, I am a bit shocked by his decision," said Petersen, who played in 36 Tests for South Africa, scoring five centuries, largely as opening partner to Graeme Smith. "During the lunch break of day five in Centurion, I noticed that he was not quite 100 percent becau...

Bumrah in leadership role, named ODI vice-captain

In-form opener KL Rahul will lead India in the three ODIs against South Africa, as Rohit Sharma, the recently-appointed white-ball captain, has yet to recover from a hamstring injury that had ruled him out of the Test series in South Africa, the selectors informed after the committee met on Friday evening. While Rahul, the designated vice-captain, taking over was on the expected lines, the decision to upgrade Jasprit Bumrah was a surprise call. Sharma’s propensity to pick injuries of late—he was injured for the Test series in Australia as well as missed some of the IPL games too—-is worrying, with the T20 World Cup just 10 months away and the much coveted 50-over World Cup at home only a year-and-a-half from now. The regular captain missing important series is not an ideal build-up to t...
