Due to shortage, Covid-19 vaccination slows down in Gurgaon

Even though Gurgaon has administered at least one dose of the Covid vaccine to over 89 percent of its population, the pace of the vaccination campaign in the district has slowed down over the last one week, as the health department grapples with a massive shortage of vaccines. With no word from the Haryana government on fresh stocks, the situation is set to continue over the next few days. As per health department data, the number of people who have been inoculated in the week between July 5 and July 11 are less than half the number inoculated in the preceding week, between June 28 and July 4. While 1,79,678 people were vaccinated last week, only 76,947 people were inoculated this week. Of those vaccinated last week, 1,12,399 received their first dose of the vaccine while 4...

President Ramaphosa condemns violence ‘based on ethnic mobilisation’

Johannesburg, July 12 (PTI): South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the violence that has been ravaging the country's main economic provinces for the past few days following the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma. Violent mobs of rioters have been burning vehicles, looting stores and blockading main routes in protests against Zuma's jail sentence of 15 months that the country's apex court imposed on him for contempt of court after he refused to return to the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture. However, leaders across the political and civil divide have condemned the violence as the work of criminals in the guise of protest which they said was their right but should be conducted in a peaceful manner. After a tense standoff, Zuma agreed ...

Defending a modest 148, India were in a spot of bother but the spinners bowled extremely well and were supported by fielders to restrict the hosts to 140 for eight. "I will give credit to our bowlers, their field placement was important, and the fielding was outstanding," a pleased Haramanpreet said at the post match presentation ceremony. "We always want to win, this bubble thing is not that easy to adapt. We should give credit to our support staff, keeping us motivated." ‘Public discussion could have saved poor from suffering in pandemic. India needed more democracy than was allowed’: Amartya Sen

Sen talks about the “contrast” between Constitution’s idea of justice and what’s happening now, elaborates on the “tragic choice” between holding and not holding polls in the pandemic, and believes South Asian nations can still fight Covid together. The session was moderated by National Opinion Editor Vandita Mishra. VANDITA MISHRA: How has the pandemic affected you and your teaching? It has had an impact… I prefer to teach face-to-face, but in the Covid period I have taught courses through Zoom. I don’t like it so much because I like to be able to see my students and interact more directly with them. I am looking forward very much to the next session beginning in September when I hope things will not be virtual… Virtual teaching was the biggest change. The other change has...

UEFA Euro 2020 Final: Italy crowned European champions after shootout win over England

UEFA Euro 2020 Final: Italy won the European Championship for the first time since 1968 as Gianluigi Donnarumma saved two England penalties en route to a 3-2 shootout win after the teams had fought out a 1-1 extra-time draw at a raucous Wembley on Sunday. The giant keeper saved from Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after Marcus Rashford hit a post, as Federico Bernardeschi, Leonardo Bonucci and Domenico Berardi all scored for the Italians. Luke Shaw had given England a dream start with a superb goal after two minutes but Italy, who offered almost nothing in response in the first half, gradually took command as the hosts sat back and levelled through Bonucci after 67 minutes. It was the first final to be decided on penalties since Czechoslovakia beat West Germany in 1976 and wil...

Amit Mitra, Bengal finance minister since 2011, likely to step down

Senior Trinamool leader Amit Mitra is likely to step down as West Bengal Finance Minister due to ill-health, sources in the party said. Though Mitra, 74, did not contest the recently held Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed the Finance portfolio to Mitra, who has held the post since 2011, when the TMC first came to power in Bengal. Since he is not an MLA, Mitra can remain in his post for a maximum of six months unless he contests — and wins — a byelection. A senior Trinamool leader said on condition of anonymity, “Amit Mitra will complete six months as state finance minister in the third Mamata Banerjee cabinet on November 4. As he is a non-MLA minister, he will have to leave the post after six months or seek election through bypolls. However, he has i...

UP population plan for ‘balance’ among communities, lower fertility rate a focus

The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Sunday that “attempts would be made to ensure there is a population balance among various communities” in the state. Extensive campaigns would be run in communities, groups, and geographical areas where fertility rates were higher, the government’s new Population Policy 2021-30 said. “Yeh prayas bhi kiya jayega ki vibhinn samudayon ke madhya jansankhya ka santulan bana rahe. Rs 6 crore or Rs 25 lakh for Olympics gold? Home state key to cash prize

Sirisha Bandla goes to space: ‘Always wanted to explore sky, stars’

When business magnate Richard Branson fulfilled his old dream of flying to space on Sunday, among the five people who accompanied him on the “magical” trip was a 33-year-old woman with roots in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur. Sirisha Bandla, vice president of government affairs and research operations at Branson’s Virgin Galactic, became the third woman of Indian origin — after NASA astronauts Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams — to fly to space. “From a very young age she had this ambition to explore the sky, the moon, and the stars. Sirisha had set her eyes on space, and I am not at all surprised that she is all set to realise her dream,” Sirisha’s grandfather Dr Bandla Nagaiah told The Indian Express before the flight commenced on Sunday. “After hearing the news that she was pa...

Samir Banerjee is Jr Wimbledon champ: ‘Felt my roots today’

The call came just as the ball bounced. It was out. At once, he dropped his racquet and raised his hands to his head, a bemused smile on his face. Then, looking up towards his uncle in the players’ box, the 17-year-old started shouting in disbelief but the words were drowned out by the packed crowd inside Court 1. Samir Banerjee had just become the new Junior Boys Wimbledon champion. “I was saying ‘are you kidding me’. I said it three or four times. I just couldn’t believe it. I was in shock, and then that shock turned into happiness, and then I got excited. It just made me very happy,” he told The Indian Express. Banerjee is an American player of Indian origin — his father is from Assam and mother from Andhra Pradesh — and has captured the attention of fans from two nation...

Madhya Pradesh IAS officer held for forging court order acquitting him in assault case

An IAS officer in Madhya Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly forging two orders of a local court acquitting him in a case of assault filed by a woman five years ago. The officer, Santosh Verma, was promoted to the IAS soon after he produced the purported court orders, and is currently additional commissioner in the Urban Administration and Development Department in Bhopal. The alleged fraud came to light after police in Indore opened an investigation after Judicial Magistrate First Class Vijendra Singh Rawat filed a complaint at the MG Road police station on June 27, stating that some unidentified people had made fraudulent documents of his court. A case was registered under IPC Sections 420 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 471 (using forged documents as g...

Taliban at Kandahar gates, India pulls out nationals from consulate in city

With Taliban forces having advanced to within a few kilometres of Kandahar, India has evacuated Indian staff and personnel from its consulate in the southern Afghanistan city. New Delhi is watching the situation in Mazar-e-Sharif in the north of the country, where it has a consulate. “The security situation is grim in the north as well, so we are closely monitoring the situation there,” a source told The Indian Express. If the situation deteriorates, Mazar-e-Sharif could be the next place from where Indian officials and staffers will be evacuated. As of Sunday, there were no Indian diplomats or other staffers at the Indian consulates in Kandahar, Herat, and Jalalabad — there were only about 15-20 Afghan staffers at each of these locations. ‘Experience of a lifetime’: Billionaire Richard Branson achieves space dream – Times of India

British billionaire Richard Branson flew into space Sunday aboard a Virgin Galactic vessel, a voyage he described as the "experience of a lifetime" -- and one he hopes will usher in an era of lucrative space tourism. "Congratulations to all our wonderful team at Virgin Galactic for 17 years of hard, hard work to get us this far," he said during a live feed as the VSS Unity spaceship glided back to Spaceport America in New Mexico. It reached a peak altitude of around 53 miles (85 kilometers) -- beyond the boundary of space, according to the United States -- allowing the passengers to experience weightlessness and admire the Earth's curvature. The trip proceeded without drama, and touchdown occurred at around 9:40 am Mountain Time (1540 GMT), about an hour after take-off. The mission'...
