IIT-Guwahati punishes PhD scholar, gets him to pledge he won’t protest

A fourth-year Ph.D Scholar at IIT-Guwahati, Himanchal Singh (30), has had to sign a six-point undertaking, including an unusual assurance that he would not participate in “any form of agitation/ protest/ dharna,” to be allowed to resume his research programme on campus. Singh faced “suspended academic expulsion” for one semester last year for participating in a hunger strike, along with a fellow student, from January 4-7, 2020, to protest against the compulsory retirement of his teacher, Brajesh Rai, in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. When UPA defended UAPA’s stringent bail rule: ‘nothing unusual’

Congress president Sonia Gandhi was among the 10 Opposition leaders who wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind asking him to direct the Union Government to act against those responsible for foisting “false cases” on Father Stan Swamy. And asking for the “release forthwith” of those detained under “politically motivated cases, misusing draconian laws like UAPA…” That very same “draconian” law and its stringent provision for bail were strongly defended by the Congress-led UPA government and its then Home Minister P Chidambaram. Indeed, in 2008, when the UPA brought a bill to amend The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the Congress struck a quite different note from the one in today’s letter. Introducing The Unlawful Activiti...

Eye on China, public birthday wishes by PM, CMs for Dalai Lama

Amid the slide in ties with China over the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Tuesday that he had spoken to the Dalai Lama and wished him on his 86th birthday. “Spoke on phone to His Holiness the @DalaiLama to convey greetings on his 86th birthday. We wish him a long and healthy life,” Modi said in a Twitter post. This is the first time Modi has publicly announced that he has spoken to the Tibetan spiritual leader on the latter’s birthday. In September 2015, he had thanked the Dalai Lama for the latter’s birthday wishes to him. The phone call to the Tibetan spiritual leader and its public announcement have diplomatic significance given that Beijing calls the Dalai Lama a “splittist”. Others who greeted the Dalai L...

TWO MONTHS after it hosted over 36 lakh people for the Kumbh Mela, just before the second Covid wave, the BJP government in Uttarakhand has cancelled the annual Kanwar Yatra in the state citing the pandemic. On Tuesday, the state’s police authorities appealed to officers of neighbouring states to ask devotees not to come to Haridwar this month for the annual pilgrimage to collect water from the Ganga. The Yatra was not held last year due to Covid restrictions. The appeal for this year was issued during an inter-state coordination meeting, which was chaired by DGP Ashok Kumar, with police officers of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi, on the yatra. Delimitation talks: PDP stays away, Congress says state first

The Mehbooba Mufti-led People’s Democratic Party Tuesday said the Delimitation Commission lacked “constitutional and legal mandate” and stayed away from discussions with the panel which is currently in the Valley to deliberate with political parties, public representatives and UT administration officials and seek their inputs. The two other key constituents of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) — National Conference and the CPM — however, met the Commission. On Monday, in its first joint statement since June 24, the PAGD had said it was “disappointed” with the outcome of the PM’s meeting and said that “any Assembly election must be held only after restoration of full statehood for J&K”. LONDON: World number one Ash Barty outclassed compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals on Friday and set up a meeting with 2018 champion Angelique Kerber. In the first all-Australian women's Grand Slam quarter-final since the 1980 Wimbledon championships, the 25-year-old Barty produced a calm and composed display on Centre Court. Tomljanovic had battled past British wildcard Emma Raducanu the night before to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final, but was nowhere to be seen in a one-sided first set. But the 28-year-old did make more of a match of it in the second, breaking the Barty serve twice. Barty always had another level though and ended Tomljanovic's resistance in little over an hour. Rajasthan schools rank last in terms of gender parity in senior classes: Report

Rajasthan schools rank last in the Gender Parity Index (GPI) at the higher secondary level when compared with the rest of the country, reveals the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report 2019-20, which analyses trends in school education in the country. According to the recently released 2019-20 report, in Rajasthan, the GPI value for classes 11-12 is 0.87, much lower than the national average of 1.04 in this category. GPI for gross enrollment ratio (GER) is the ratio of girls to boys enrolled in schools, and is a measure of the relative access to education. A GPI of less than 1 suggests girls are more disadvantaged than boys in terms of access to school. The GPI value in Rajasthan is 0.89 for the secondary level (classes 9-10), which is the s...

Mumbai tops in vaccinating 18-44 group, Kolhapur in 45+

Kolhapur district tops the list in vaccinating people above 45 years of age with first dose, but ranks lowest in Maharashtra when it comes to coverage in the 18-44 age group (1.66 per cent). In the 18-44 age group, Mumbai tops in Maharashtra with 33.8 per cent people vaccinated with their first dose. Kolhapur, with an estimated 12.73 lakh people in 45-plus bracket, has administered first dose to 8.8 lakh people in this group. But of the 18.85 lakh in 18-44 group, it has immunised only 31,332 people, making up for 1.66 per cent in this group.
