Silger tribals go home, say protest to continue

Almost a month after protests broke out against a security forces camp at Silger in Chhatisgarh’s Sukma district, the tribals gathered at the site have returned to their villages. Residents of more than 30 villages from Sukma, Bijapur and Dantewada districts were on agitation against a newly established security camp at Silger since May 14. Mukul Roy’s exit won’t hit party: Dilip Ghosh

Hours after Mukul Roy returned to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the BJP said Roy’s exit would not affect the party’s prospects in the state as it has strong presence in the state. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh, while talking to reporters, said he was not sure if the BJP would lose anything from Roy’s decision, given that he was “unsure whether we gained anything” from his entry three-and-half years back. “Right now, we are bothered about more serious issues as the cycle of violence goes on unabated in the state. We are bothered about the safety of our workers, who are being targeted by TMC activists,” he pointed out. State BJP vice-president Joy Prakash Majumder, in a press conference, seemed surprised by Roy’s return to the TMC whom he had called a “private limited compa...

Defections and focus on grassroots — How Mukul Roy engineered BJP’s Bengal rise

Despite the BJP trying to discredit its former national vice-president Mukul Roy by claiming that he did not make any difference to its prospects in West Bengal, a look at his four-year stint with the saffron camp paints a different picture. Roy quit the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in September 2017 and joined the saffron outfit in November. Within a year of being in the BJP, Roy helped the party expand its organisational base to the grassroots and build booth committees. As a result, the party performed well in the 2018 panchayat elections even though it was a distant second to the ruling party. The saffron outfit bagged 5,759 Gram Panchayat seats, 764 Panchayat Samiti seats and 23 Zilla Parishad seats. The BJP performed well in the districts of Purulia, Jhargram, Paschim Med...

WARSAW : Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat proved that her preparations for the Tokyo Games were on track by winning the 53kg gold at the Poland Open on Friday, giving herself some crucial 'mat-time' ahead of the Olympics. It is the third title of the season for the 26-year-old Vinesh, who claimed gold medals at the Matteo Pellicone event (March) and Asian Championship (April) earlier. The victory would potentially make Vinesh the top seed at the Tokyo Olympics. Except for her opening bout against 2019 World bronze (50kg) winner Ekaterina Poleshchuk, Vinesh wasn't troubled by any of her other rivals as she conceded only two points en route to the top place on the podium. She did not concede a single point to Ukraine's Khrystyna Bereza in the final, winning 8-0. Vinesh took most of her ...

India vs Sri Lanka: Krishnappa Gowtham keen to make opportunities count | Cricket News – Times of India

BENGALURU: The Indian team for the limited overs tour of Sri Lanka has six spinners in the line-up. In the bevy of tweakers, Krishnappa Gowtham is the lone new face. The others are Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Having earned his maiden national call-up, the Karnataka off-spinner is not unduly worried about the competition in the team. Instead, he is looking forward to soaking in the experience of being part of a national squad. “I’m not thinking about the number of spinners in the team. We all know the nature of Sri Lankan wickets. My focus is on the opportunities I’ll get and how I make them count,” Gowtham, 32, told TOI on Friday. The all-rounder’s call-up has been in the pipeline for a couple of years now, but when it finally cam...

Holding praises England footballers’ ‘backbone’ in taking a knee | Cricket News – Times of India

BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom): West Indies great Michael Holding has praised the decision of England's footballers to continue taking a knee, saying they are doing more than their cricket counterparts to combat racism. The former paceman last year called for meaningful change to tackle injustice, saying he had encountered abuse as a young player in England and Australia. Holding, now a commentator, returned to the theme on Friday during the second day's play in the second Test between England and New Zealand at Edgbaston. "The footballers, (manager) Gareth Southgate and the England team, I applaud them for what they're doing," he said. "They are getting a lot of stick for taking the knee (in Euro 2020 warm-up games), they're getting booed, but they are showing some backbone. "They're sayi...
