Antony Blinken casts doubt on methodology of coronavirus lab-leak report – Times of India

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken cast doubt on Tuesday on the methodology of a report on the origins of Covid-19 cited by the Wall Street Journal that concluded the hypothesis of a virus leak from a Chinese lab was plausible. "I saw the report. I think it's on a number of levels, incorrect," Blinken told a Senate committee hearing on the State Department's budget request when asked about the Journal article. The Journal on Monday cited people familiar with a classified report by a US government national laboratory as saying it concluded that the hypothesis of a virus leak from a Chinese lab in Wuhan was plausible and deserved further investigation. The report said the study was prepared in May 2020 by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and referred to by State...

Narada case HC refuses to get into ‘sanction of arrests’ issue, says it’s pending in trial court

A five-judge Calcutta High Court bench hearing the CBI’s petition to transfer the Narada case from the trial court on Tuesday refused to comment on the issue of sanction of arrests of four political leaders last month in connection with the probe. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has challenged the sanctions the governor granted to the agency to arrest three leaders of the ruling party and a former Kolkata mayor in the case of alleged bribery. The CBI has urged the High Court to hear the case, and declare that the trial court hearing on May 17 in which the four leaders were granted bail was vitiated because of pressure from a mob. On Tuesday, the accused’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that their arrest was void in the absence of a “proper sanction” from a competent auth...

Alexander Zverev powers into first French Open semi-final | Tennis News – Times of India

PARIS: Alexander Zverev settled some early nerves before beating Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the semi-final of the French Open for the first time on Tuesday. After his frustration wore off following an early argument with chair umpire Alison Hughes over a line call, Zverev clicked into gear while an increasingly despondent Fokina wavered. Sixth seed Zverev, the first German to reach the last four at Roland Garros since Michael Stich in 1996, was simply too good for the world No. 46, who managed to hold serve only three times for his first appearance on court Philippe Chatrier. Zverev will face either Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev of Russia. "Obviously it's very nice to be in the semi-finals but that doesn't satisfy me. ...

Virus mutation, human behaviour cause multiple waves in a pandemic: AIIMS director | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In case of pandemics caused by respiratory viruses, there are multiple waves but the infection becomes seasonal when large part of the population develops immunity either through vaccinated or by natural infection, AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said amid concerns about multiple waves of Covid-19. “In respiratory viruses – whether it is influenza or coronavirus, when there is a pandemic then usually waves come. This happens because in the beginning the population is susceptible and so multiple waves come and then virus becomes endemic and then infection has seasonality,” Dr Guleria said, pointing at similar trends witnessed during Spanish flu in 1918 and even during H1N1 Swine flu pandemic in 2009. Now, H1N1 Swine flu cases are usually seen during monsoons and winters. Cau...

Bill for free vaccines and extra foodgrains will be Rs 1.15 lakh crore in FY21

THE PRIME MINISTER’S decision Monday to provide free vaccines to states for all citizens over 18 years from June 21 is likely to cost the exchequer an additional Rs 15,000 crore compared with the Budget allocation of Rs 35,000 crore. “It is too early to give a correct estimate with multiple suppliers and different prices. But the rough estimate is total expenditure for vaccines for this year may be Rs 45,000-50,000 crore. In the Budget, we had provided Rs 35,000 crore, and of this, the government has paid out about Rs 5,000 crore,” a senior government official who did not wish to be named told The Indian Express. With the Central government assuming the full cost of vaccination, states will not have to make extra provision for this in their budgets, the official said. “Most...

Plug, charge, ride: Low-cost charging system could be game-changer for electric bikes and 3-wheelers

A low-cost charging system for two- and three-wheeler electric vehicles, expected to hit the market in about six months, could prove to be a game-changer for electric mobility in the country. Two- and three-wheelers account for about 80 per cent of vehicle sales in the country, and are a major source of vehicular emissions. Government officials said the adoption of electric mobility in this segment could be much faster if a low-cost and easily accessible charging system was made available. The new charging system, developed as a government-industry partnership, could be priced as low as Rs 3,500. Existing charging solutions cost anywhere between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. A prototype has already been developed and at least half a dozen companies are currently working to manufa...

As OnePlus CEO Pete Lau mentioned, the "CE" in the OnePlus Nord CE 5G stands for "Core Edition". In other words, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G will be a stripped down version of the Nord. OnePlus is launching the Nord CE 5G with Snapdragon 750G SoC while the older OnePlus Nord is powered by a better Snapdragon 765G chipset. “This is a produc...
