Malls, theatres and all shops can resume normal operations in Level 1 districts. State can’t claim financial constraints to fire staff: Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court in a ruling has said that the State or its agencies cannot claim financial constraints or impact of the pandemic as a ground for dispensing with the services of its employees. It is the bounden duty of a welfare State to secure the rights of livelihood of the citizens, the court said. Justice Jyoti Singh made the observations while ordering reinstatement of a number of pilots whose resignations were accepted by Air India last year despite their withdrawal by the officers prior to the acceptance. The court also held them to be entitled to back wages. Air India had argued that the acceptance of resignations was completely justified as it has been reeling under financial distress for a number of years. The court said that a resignation tendered by an emplo...

After a week-long wait for Mehul Choksi in Dominica, jet back in Delhi via Madrid

From the time he showed up bruised and battered in Dominica police custody, the story of fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi, a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda who is wanted by India for his alleged role in the PNB scam, has been one of twists and turns, and many unanswered questions. While a debate rages on how Choksi landed in Dominica — his family has alleged abduction — and Antigua wants him deported to India, a chartered jet operated by Qatar Executive, the private arm of Qatar Airways, to likely fly him out returned to Delhi Friday night after waiting at the Douglas-Charles airport in Dominica for more than a week. It flew 7 hours to Madrid where it made a 90-minute halt on its way to Delhi where it landed around 11 pm IST. The 13-seater Bombardier Global jet, which landed ...

SC rejects plea against bail to Hiremath, talks of ‘normal conduct’

The Supreme Court Friday declined to interfere with the Delhi High Court order granting anticipatory bail to journalist Varun Hiremath in a rape case, while raising questions regarding “normal human conduct, behaviour and understanding”. It stressed that it was saying so only for the purpose of the bail application. Dismissing the complainant’s plea against bail to Hiremath, a Bench of Justices Navin Sinha and Ajay Rastogi told her counsel, Senior Advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, “Our question is purely for the purpose of bail only. The question of normal human conduct, behaviour and understanding. If a man and woman are in a room, the man makes a request and the woman complies with it… do we need to say anything more at this stage?” Ramakrishnan replied that as per the IPC, th...

Not keen on Congress fielding candidate against Mamata: Adhir to Sonia

Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday wrote to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, saying he is not keen on fielding a candidate from his party against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, which will see a bypoll. The move from Chowdhury has fuelled speculation about a future tie-up between the Congress and Trinamool in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. “I feel that that we should not field any candidate against Mamata Banerjee from Bhabanipur seat. I have written a letter regarding this to Soniaji. Our fight against the TMC will continue but on this issue I think we should not field any candidate against her…” Chowdhury said. On May 21, TMC MLA and state minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay resigned as an MLA, leaving the Bhabanipu...

Vaccine and death: Govt rebuts claim, Facebook takes it down, then restores it

Triggering another showdown between the Centre and social media platforms, late last month, Facebook and Instagram took down a fact-check post by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), in which it had rebutted a false claim linking Covid vaccinations to death. The post was restored on both platforms following the government’s intervention. On May 25, the ‘PIB Fact Check’ handle shared a post on Facebook and Instagram, in which it had debunked a claim attributed to French Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier that people getting vaccinated against Covid-19 would die within two years. Attaching an image of the alleged claim, the post said, “An image allegedly quoting a French Nobel Laureate on #COVID19 vaccines is circulating on social media… The claim in the image is #FAKE… #COVID1...

Malicious emails sit for around 83 hours in employees’ inbox before being noticed: Report – Times of India

Researchers have found that any malicious email, on an average, spends 83 hours in users’ inboxes before they are discovered by a security team or reported by end users and finally remediated. According to Barracuda researchers, it takes over three days for a potential threatening email to be discovered. For this study, the researchers analysed threat patterns and response practices across 3,500 organisations in the companies. In their results, they found that an average organisation with 1,100 users will experience around 15 email security incidents per month, and on average 10 employees will be impacted by each phishing attack that manages to get through. It was also discovered that 3% of employees will have the tendency to click on a link in a malicious email, exposing the entire org...

2nd ODI: Ireland hit back with eight-wicket win over Netherlands | Cricket News – Times of India

UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS: Ireland overpowered the Netherlands by eight wickets in Utrecht on Friday to level a three-match one-day international series at 1-1. It was all far cry from Wednesday's opener at the same ground, when the hosts won by just one run to gain in a set of matches that are part of the World Cup Super League qualifying process for the 2023 50-over showpiece in India. Ireland, set a modest victory target of 158 on Friday, had an early setback when opener and former captain William Porterfield was out for a duck. But current skipper Andrew Balbirnie made an unbeaten 63 as Ireland won with seven overs to spare, with experienced batsman Paul Stirling contributing 52 to the Test nation's chase. The real damage, however, was done after the hosts won the toss, with Craig Young ...
