PIL against Central Vista a disguise to stall project: Centre to HC | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday opposed in the Delhi high court a PIL to halt the construction of the Central Vista project in view of the pandemic and alleged that the plea was a "facade" to stall the work. The petitioners on the other hand contended they were only interested in the safety of the workers at the site and the citizens lives and compared the project to "Auschwitz", a German concentration camp during World War-II. Hard hitting arguments against the maintainability of the plea and the continuation of the project were made during the over three hour long hearing before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh which reserved its judgment in the matter. Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Pvt Ltd, which has been awarded the tender for the project, also opposed the...

PMO watching, Covid command centre tracks easing in Varanasi

Sagar Choudhary watched the fire burn at the Harish Chandra Ghat of Varanasi. Around him were five bodies. Three burning on metal stands, another on the ghats, and one wrapped in a saffron cloth. Choudhary is a Dom, and has helped people conduct last rites for two decades. But he says he cannot forget what he saw 10 days ago. “There were 60 bodies, taking up every inch of space. We say that Harish Chandra Ghat is the most revered in the country, that those who depart from here attain salvation. That day, even the last rites could not be completed,” he said. The fallout of that April week, when the waiting time for a cremation stretched to seven hours amid a shortage of wood, is visible. On Saturday, a former garbage dump was being used as a registration site for Covid bodie...

Chappell backs Cummins over Smith for Australia captaincy | Cricket News – Times of India

(Photo by Cameron Spencer/Getty Images)SYDNEY: Former skipper Ian Chappell has backed premier fast bowler Pat Cummins over batting maestro Steve Smith for Australian captaincy after incumbent Tim Paine retires. Chappell's views are in contrast to Paine, who recently said he will have no qualms about former skipper Smith returning to the job whenever he chooses to retire. "I think it's time to move on. To me if you go back to Smith, you're going backwards. It's time to look ahead, not in the rear-vision mirror," Chappell told Wide World of Sports. He also feels Cummins' prospects of leading Australia in future should not be dented even if he was aware of any plans to tamper with the ball during the infamous 2018 Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. The ball-tampering fiasco had ...

Less than one clotting event per million Covishield doses: govt

Almost two months after several European countries temporarily paused the use of the Oxford- AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of rare blood clots, the Health Ministry Monday said 26 potential thromboembolic events, or formation of clots in blood vessels, had been reported across the country following the administration of Covishield, as the vaccine is known in India. That works out to 0.61 cases per million doses, or a percentage of 0.000061. Noting that this was “minuscule”, the ministry said Covishield “continues to have a definite positive benefit-risk profile” with “tremendous potential to prevent infections and reduce deaths” due to Covid-19. In case of Covaxin, it said, “no potential thromboembolic events” were reported. “AEFI (Adverse Event Following Immunization) d...

MELBOURNE: The legendary Adam Gilchrist has said Cricket Australia (CA) did not carry out a thorough investigation into the 2018 Sandpaper Gate by refusing to go deeper into the problem of ball-tampering. The former dashing wicketkeeper-batsman said CA, in the course of the whole episode, missed out on an opportunity to make a strong statement. "There was an opportunity for CA if they were going to make such a strong statement they needed to do a more thorough investigation to work out where the root of the problem was," Gilchrist was quoted as saying on SEN Radio. "Anyone would be naive to think people were not aware with what was going on about ball maintenance. I don't think Cricket Australia wanted to go there. They did not want to go any deeper than that superficial example of ball...

Archer, who is one of the fastest bowlers in the present era, had also missed the IPL 2021 before the tournament was ruled out.
