Covid priority: Mamata Banerjee lists vaccines, urges people to adhere to curbs

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has again accused the Centre of not sending enough vaccines to her state. Addressing a gathering of clerics, representatives of all communities and Puja committee members after chairing her first cabinet meeting in her third stint as CM, Mamata said, “We need 10 crore vaccines but demanded only 3 crores. However, they (Centre) only sent us one lakh doses. I also urged the central government to let us buy vaccines from outside but it did not give permission for that as well.” “Bengal needs 550 metric tonnes oxygen, but the Centre has allotted a little over 300 metric tonnes,” she said. Claiming that the Centre has reportedly exported 65 per cent of vaccines produced in the country, she said, “I ask the Union government to mull over its options ...

AP PhotoFRANKLIN GROVE: A team of Illinois researchers is using dogs to track down a threatened species of turtle. Researchers believe ornate box turtles, once living in half of Illinois' 102 counties, are found in less than 10. One known home for the species is in Lee County, and a team from the Chicago Zoological Society and the University of Illinois spent Friday surveying the 3,800-acre (1,500-hectare) Nachusa Grasslands. A team paced through the grasses trying to spot the small turtles, aided by a group of Boykin spaniels that can sniff out the turtles' trail. When a human or a dog located a turtle, researchers made notes about the reptile's eyes, ears, nose and took ph...

Chokari villagers stay indoors after 10 deaths within two days

Chokari village in Padra taluka of Vadodara district wore a deserted look on Monday evening, with a complete shut down of local markets and a strict decision by villagers to stay indoors. The reason: At least 10 people died in two days — May 6 and 7 — in the village, with a population of about 15,000. Although district health officials maintain that the deaths were due to “natural causes”, local villagers are anxious that RT-PCR test was not done on any of the deceased to confirm the claims. In the village, which was once the chosen spot for the Gujarat government’s ambitious proposed sports university, the fear for Covid-19 is prevalent. Villagers say that several persons in the village died last week, developing breathing issues, and did not test for Covid-19 due to the u...

Delhi to UP, DU to AMU, teaching community battles loss

FROM SENIOR professors to para-teachers in rural pockets, from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh, both bearing the brunt of the raging pandemic, all sections of the teaching community are reeling under the loss of colleagues and friends. Among the institutions that have been hit hard is Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), which has lost close to 50 members in the current wave, including serving and retired teachers, teachers in its school, and non-teaching staff members, spokesperson Rahat Abrar said. At Delhi University (DU), teachers estimate that around 24 members of the teaching staff have lost their lives in this wave. ‘Adipurush’ budget wouldn’t have spiked if Prabhas could’ve convinced director Om Raut- Exclusive! – Times of India

ETimes has an inside scoop on the Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon starrer 'Adipurush' whose shoot has been shifted to Hyderabad, no thanks to COVID cases that shot up in number from April 2021 in Mumbai (but are now thankfully being brought down). The film in question is about 25 per cent complete. The story goes that Prabhas was extremely reluctant to shoot in Mumbai from Day 1. However, Om Raut (who earlier directed the Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Saif film 'Tanhaji') did not relent to his grumbling and erected two sets in Mumbai- one in Film City and one outside it. Now, both the sets in question have been dismantled and the film has run into an undesirable hike in its budget than what was originally planned and allocated. Says a source, "If Raut had given in to Prabhas' insistence...

Rs 700-Rs 1,500: Amid lack of clarity, what private hospitals are charging

The government’s liberalised Covid-19 vaccine policy has led to wide differences in the prices that private hospitals are charging for the shots, not just inter-city but intra-city as well. For instance, as per the Co-WIN portal on Monday, H N Reliance Hospital in Mumbai is charging Rs 700 per dose for Covishield — Rs 100 more than the price at which the Serum Institute of India (SII) sold the vaccine to private hospitals. However, Nanavati Hospital in the city has set a price of Rs 900 for one shot, as per the portal. Other hospitals like Dr B L Kapur Hospital in Delhi and Max Healthcare in North India which, like Nanavati, are under the management of Radiant Life Care, also charge this rate, showed Co-WIN. Similarly, the rate specified by Apollo Hospitals and Fortis Healt...

Covid rumblings within: BJP leaders in UP complain as govt puts up a brave face

As Uttar Pradesh continues to battle the second wave of Covid-19, there are growing voices of unease within the state BJP, with a number of MLAs and MPs raising questions about the state government’s handling of the situation — from shortage of hospital beds to alleged lack of cooperation from authorities to deal with the hundreds of SOS calls from their constituencies. Over the last few weeks, many of them have written to the Chief Minister with these complaints, prompting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has himself only recently recovered from Covid-19, to start visiting hotspot districts in the state and review arrangements. While Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Santosh Gangwar’s May 6 letter to Adityanath complaining about poor Covid care in his Lo...

As deaths go up 10 fold, worrying signs from smaller states

SINCE April, the daily count of new cases has increased five times, from about 80,000 to more than four lakh a day now. During this same time, however, the number of deaths being reported every day has increased almost 10 times, from about 400 a day to over 4,000 a day now. While Maharashtra continues to report the maximum number of deaths every day, the worrying sign is the rapid rise in deaths in other states, even relatively smaller ones like Jharkhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and now Uttarakhand. At the end of March, Maharashtra was contributing roughly one-third of all the deaths in the country. Now, that share is just about one-fifth. States such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Punjab have seen a large number of coronavirus-related deaths in the last 40 days...

Vaccine inequity gets worse: rural India, smaller hospitals hit

The slide in the number of vaccine doses administered in the week starting May 1, after the government “opened up” vaccination beyond priority groups, to its lowest level in eight weeks hides a further skew — indication that the inoculation process could be turning more inequitable than earlier. In a vaccine market that continues to see a demand-supply mismatch, the revised vaccine procurement process builds in a skew against smaller hospitals in cities and towns in comparison to their bigger counterparts in simply getting access to the shots, and a more disconcerting urban-rural divide in terms of where healthcare facilities are vis-à-vis the already-established supply-chain map. The skew is beginning to get reflected on two counts. First, the ability of hospitals to proc...

Czechs rejoice as stores reopen; honor Covid-19 victims – Times of India

PRAGUE: The Czech Republic massively relaxed its coronavirus restrictions on Monday as the hard-hit nation paid its respects to the country's nearly 30,000 dead. The latest easing came after new infections fell to the levels last seen in August, at which time the government failed to react fast enough to a rising number of infections, which later contributed to a record number of deaths. People in the capital of Prague formed lines Monday before opening time as all stores and shopping malls returned to business. "It's a relief that they are open," said shopper Dan Cooper. "I think I have a long list of things that I need to buy now." In a visible change, Czechs were allowed to remove face masks in all outdoor spaces if they stayed at least two meters (6 feet) from other people. Als...

Curbs tighten but Covid-19 vaccination slackens in country’s most vulnerable districts

As many as two-thirds of all districts reporting a positivity rate of more than 20 per cent — an index of the pandemic’s current severity and its potential spread — have reported an alarming dip in vaccination after the Centre’s new norms kicked in May 1, an analysis of districtwise data obtained by The Indian Express reveals. Not only does this raise doubts over the immediate course of the national vaccination programme, it also puts a question mark on vaccine equity. For, a scrutiny of the worst-hit districts shows these include several rural areas where the curve is rising and where there are glaring gaps in medical infrastructure. Between May 2 and May 8, as many as 306 districts — just under half of the country — were reporting a positivity rate of more than 20 per cen...
