Demand up by 60 MT in 8 days: Punjab gasps for oxygen as cases spiral

The oxygen emergency in Punjab is witnessing a fast escalation. To add to the rising caseload that has pushed demand for oxygen up by almost 60 metric tonnes in the first 8 days of this month, the IAF has indicated that transport of oxygen tankers by air might take a hit on May 11, 12 due to adverse weather conditions. Punjab has been consistently struggling to lift its entire quota of oxygen allocated by the Centre due to logistical constraints. “Covid patient load in the state has gone up by almost 3 times from April 21 to May 7,” said a government functionary, adding: “Oxygen consumption in state has also enhanced manifolds during this time. On April 30, Covid oxygen consumption was 203.8 MT, whereas on May 7 it reached 250.6 MT, registering an increase of almost 50 MT i...

How good intentions but bad timing, not securing stocks, paved road to the shortage

From WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus and Caribbean cricketing star Chris Gayle to Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne, many praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for demonstrating “perhaps the most significant of benevolence, kindness and certainly of empathy… compared to any act of any other leader globally”. President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted a depiction of Lord Hanuman delivering a mountain of vaccines, a lifesaver like the mythical Sanjeevani, from India to Brazil. Until March. Then India’s growing struggle to vaccinate people at home prompted a pause on exports. This has hit hard the Covax program aimed to benefit over 90 poorer countries. As things stand, the African Union could miss the target to vaccinate 30-35% of its population by the end of 2021....

Fear in each family: Govt on the defensive, anxiety deepens within BJP and RSS ranks

For the first time since the Modi Government came to power in 2014, senior Union ministers and top functionaries in the BJP and the RSS are on the defensive and unsure of how — or even what — to communicate to the people as the second Covid curve rages across the country. Yet, there is a consensus that “fear has touched each family” and people need to see more “effort and achievement” to feel some “reassurance”. To that effect, there are also voices in the party and the RSS speculating on the need for the government to “revamp its team” so that it can deliver. A fortnight after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation, the Centre’s response trails way behind the curve, which shows few signs of a let-up. On the most pressing issue of oxygen, a series of High Cour...

Oxygen, ventilators, ICU: Govt puts out data, steep rise in critical care demand

CLOSE TO 50,000 Covid patients in India are currently in intensive care units, while more than 14,500 are on ventilator support, according to Government data released on Saturday. Also, more than 1.37 lakh patients are currently on oxygen support, a Government statement said. This is the first time that the Government has released nation-wide data on Covid patients requiring critical care, and it shows how serious the second wave of infections has been, compared to the first wave last year. At the peak of the first wave in September, about 23,000 patients were in ICUs, less than 4,000 of them were on ventilators, and around 40,000 required oxygen support, documents accessed by The Indian Express show. The latest numbers were shared by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan at...

Mukul Roy ends talk of TMC return, reaffirms faith in BJP

Amid speculation that he may return to the ruling Trinamool Congress where he was once the Number 2, BJP vice president Mukul Roy on Saturday clarified that he was very much with the saffron party and will remain so. “My fight would continue as a soldier of BJP to restore democracy in the state. I would request everyone to put concoctions and conjectures to rest. I am resolute in my political path,” Roy tweeted on Saturday. The buzz on his political future gathered steam on Friday after the veteran leader, who marked his electoral debut with a win in the Assembly polls this year, arrived at the House to take oath as an MLA but was conspicuous by his absence at the parliamentary party meeting that followed. Roy was even seen exchanging pleasantries with senior Trinamool lead...

Post-poll violence: Dhankhar calls chief secy, DGP to Raj Bhavan, seeks report

Taking a serious note of the post-poll violence in West Bengal, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday called chief secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay and DGP Virendra to the Raj Bhawan and expressed his displeasure for not being updated about the law-and-order situation. He sought a status report from the two officials after the Home Department “failed” to do so. “Chief Secretary @MamataOfficial and DGP @WBPolice called on me at Raj Bhawan at 6 PM today. Unfortunately both came without any paper or reports sought. Directed them to send the same without delay. In a sense disgusted with such stance. Hope there is appropriate response now,” Dhankhar tweeted after the two officials met him. The meeting came at a time when sporadic incidents of violence continued in the state. At Kha...

A law student, a 93-yr-old refugee, and a Covid centre bond

Till a month back they lived on either side of an international border, oblivious of each others’ existence. On May 2, when they walked out of a hospital in Mizoram, arms intertwined, they were bound by more than just the virus they had beaten. To 24-year-old C T Ramnunmawii Parte, the 93-year-old refugee from Myanmar she nursed for 10 days is now “pi-pi (grandmother in Mizo)”. For “pi-pi”, who doesn’t want to be named because of her uncertain status, Parte is “an angel that god sent to me”. A law student, Parte tested positive for Covid on April 13. As per the guidelines in Mizoram, which has 1,902 active cases at present and has seen 17 deaths, she was taken to a Covid care centre in Aizawl. A week later, she recovered and was set to go home when she heard that “an old la...

The West Bengal government has changed the Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) for handing over bodies of Covid-19 patients. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid draw to give Real title advantage | Football News – Times of India

(Reuters Photo)BARCELONA: The La Liga title race was blown wide open after Barcelona and Atletico Madrid played out a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou on Saturday. The stalemate means that should third-placed Real Madrid beat fourth-placed Sevilla on Sunday, they will move top of the table - level on 77 points with Atletico - but ahead given their superior head-to-head record with just three games to play. Barcelona moved up to second place on Saturday with 75 points. "We're still in the mix. La Liga's still wide open, three games is a lot even if we know it's not in our hands anymore," Barca defender Gerard Pique said. "Anything can happen. I'd like to know if any other side in La Liga has won four in a row, it's only something we've done. "If we win our remaining three matches, I think we'll win ...

Vaccine Maitri: As cases rose and stocks shrank, most vaccine exports went where Covid much less severe than India

On April 6, as the Covid curve began rising like a sheer wall, asked about vaccines and the need to open them up, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan was dismissive. “The aim is not to vaccinate someone who wants it,” he said, “the aim is to vaccinate those who require it the most.” Perhaps, the Ministry of External Affairs thought a little differently. For, neither requirement nor want appeared to define the Centre’s Vaccine Maitri initiative launched January 20. Under the programme, effectively suspended end of March, more than 6.6 crore doses of Covid vaccines — almost all Covishield — were sent to 93 countries. This stockpile is enough to support about 30 days of vaccination nationwide at last week’s inoculation rate — and at two doses, could cover the adult populatio...

The visitors took the lead in the second minute when Eze carved the Blades open with a mazy run and slid the ball to Benteke, whose effort bounced off George Baldock and dribbled over the line. Wilfried Zaha had an effort from close range blocked before Benteke was denied a second when his powerful header was only just kept out by United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
