400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur: SGPC to limit celebrations

The SGPC has decided to limit the grand function it has been planning to mark the 400th Prakash Gurpurab (birth anniversary) of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. Addressing a press conference at the SGPC office in Amritsar on Wednesday, SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “The 400th Prakash Gurpurab centenary celebrations were scheduled to be celebrated grandly at Bhai Gurdas Ji Nagar, New Amritsar in collaboration with the sangat. But due to the surge in the Covid-19 cases, these ceremonies will now be held at the Diwan Hall of Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib at Sri Darbar Sahib.” She said that the decision has been taken after holding discussions with government officials. Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “There was a lot of enthusiasm among the sangat for the centenary celebrations, but due to Co...

Ayodhya shrouded in silence on Ram Navami, Saryu banks barricaded, borders sealed | India News – Times of India

AYODHYA: Amidst the lethal run of the Covid second wave, Ramjanmabhoomi in Ayodhya was shut on Ram Navami day and the temple town remained under virtual curfew with all major shrines, including Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhavan and Dashrath Mahal closed for pilgrims. With borders sealed for devotees, including Kumbh seers returning from Haridwar, even Ram ki Paidi on the Saryu banks was deserted with all entry points to the ghats barricaded. Barring a fleeting glimpse of stray monkeys and cops at checkpoints, silence shrouded Ayodhya, a town which would be agog with Vedic chants and hymns on Lord Ram’s birthday. With the district administration imposing stringent curbs on movement of people, devotees were unable to take blessings of Ram Lalla and were forced to celebrate at home. At Ramjanmab...

White House offers new tax credit to help spur vaccinations – Times of India

WASHINGTON: The White House is trying to overcome diminishing demand for Covid-19 shots by offering businesses a tax incentive to give employees paid leave to get vaccinated. The move comes as the United States is set to meet President Joe Biden's goal of administering 200 million coronavirus doses in his first 100 days in office. With more than 50% of adults at least partially vaccinated and roughly 28 million vaccine doses being delivered each week, demand has eclipsed supply as the constraining factor to vaccinations in much of the country. Over the last week, the pace of inoculation in the US has slowed slightly. That is partly a reflection of disruptions from the "pause" in administration of the Johnson & Johnson shot for a safety review, but also of softening interest for va...

Nadal struggles past world number 111 Ivashka in Barcelona opener | Tennis News – Times of India

BARCELONA: Rafael Nadal had to fight back from a set down to defeat Belarus qualifier Ilya Ivashka on Wednesday as the Spaniard survived an early test in his bid to win the Barcelona title for the 12th time. The 34-year-old Nadal, who suffered a surprise quarter-final exit at the hands of Andrey Rublev in the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals last week, dropped the first set against the world 111 before pulling through 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. It was Nadal's 62nd win in the tournament against just four defeats. He next faces either Japan's Kei Nishikori, the 2014 and 2015 Barcelona champion, or Chile's Christian Garin in the quarter-finals. Fiery Italian Fabio Fognini was defaulted from the event for verbally abusing a line judge. The 33-year-old was trailing world number 147 Bernabe Zapata Mira...

In BJP rank & file, a worry: ‘Phone calls pour in for bed, cylinder… can do little’

Having taken credit for “victory” over the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, both the BJP and the Centre are scrambling to respond politically to the fierce second wave that’s hit the country like a “toofan,” as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it Tuesday. The wave has touched more homes than ever, the daily death count has hit a record high and hapless families struggle to find a bed or an oxygen cylinder. The fact that all this is one full year after the pandemic and after almost four months of calm has accentuated public anguish. For the party, too, it has hit home. Over the last few days, many BJP leaders — including MPs and party office-bearers in several states — told The Indian Express they have been inundated with calls for help from families, frien...

146 districts are cause for concern, positivity of over 15%: Government

The Centre said on Wednesday that 146 districts have reported a positivity rate of over 15 per cent and are a “cause of concern”, while 274 districts have reported 5-15 per cent case positivity. It also released data which showed that post-vaccination, only “2-4 persons per 10,000” had tested positive. A total of 2,95,041 new cases and 2,023 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases has now crossed the 21-lakh mark, while the death toll has touched 1,82,553. “These 146 districts are a cause of concern. We have held detailed discussions with the 146 districts on efforts that have to be undertaken to control the spread of infection. These are the districts where the maximum number of cases are coming and the health system is facing the strain of n...

Pfizer: Will supply Covid-19 vaccine only through government channels

Pfizer has decided to prioritise orders from the government, and supply doses of its Covid-19 vaccine “only through government contracts” in India. This may potentially mean that the American drug giant’s vaccine, developed with BioNTech, may not be available through private hospitals in the country — unless the Centre or state governments decide to sell doses to these facilities. The decision by Pfizer comes at a time when India has opened up its immunisation strategy, and allowed companies the option of charging states and private hospitals a potentially higher rate for their vaccines. While expressing the company’s commitment to making its vaccine available in India, a Pfizer spokesperson reiterated its decision to prioritise governments in their immunisation programmes...

Nancy Pelosi floats new proposal for bipartisan January 6 commission – Times of India

WASHINGTON: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is renewing her push for a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol insurrection, floating a new proposal to Republicans that would evenly split the panel's membership between the two parties. Pelosi first proposed a commission in February that would have had four Republicans and seven Democrats to "conduct an investigation of the relevant facts and circumstances relating to the domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol." Republicans rejected it as inadequate. The speaker said last week in a letter to colleagues that she had sent a new offer to Republicans and "we are determined to seek the truth" of Jan. 6, when hundreds of former President Donald Trump's supporters broke into the Capitol and interrupted the certification of Presi...

IPL 2021: Chepauk wicket is shocking but it’s not curators fault, says Warner | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner on Wednesday termed the Chepauk pitch as "shocking" after his side finally scripted a successful run chase in four matches for their first win of the IPL season. Sunrisers have lost three matches on the trot at the MA Chidambaram Stadium track here, which has the reputation of aiding the spinners. The venue has witnessed many batting collapses this season. On Wednesday, SRH, however, had the last laugh as they chased down a small target of 120, set by Punjab Kings, in 18.4 overs to snap their three-match losing streak. Warner criticised the wicket but shied away from blaming the curators. "To be honest, it's shocking," Warner said in a virtual press conference after his team notched up a comfortable nine wicket win over Punjab. "It looks...

Ma vs Mao

Motherhood and apple pie”, at least for the Americans, are beyond reproach. Closer home, self-made fictional entrepreneur Vijay (from Deewar) had bangla, gaadi, daulat, etc, but was belittled by Ravi, his ungrateful younger brother, because he did not have the support of his Ma. But even the mater familias — that too of a senior, once-powerful party leader — does not escape the ever-watchful and increasingly insecure eye of the party-state in China. Wen Jiabao, former Chinese Communist Party politburo member and the country’s premier from 2002 to 2012, wrote an essay titled ‘My Mother’, which was published in the Macau Herald. Within China, Wen is considered something of a reformist and he even mentioned democracy in some of his public addresses as premier. In the essay, he...

Djokovic cruises into Belgrade quarter-finals | Tennis News – Times of India

BELGRADE: Novak Djokovic bounced back from his shock early defeat by Dan Evans in Monte Carlo last week with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kwon Soon-woo to reach the Serbian Open quarter-finals on Wednesday. The world number one, warming up for the start of the French Open next month, will face fellow home hope Miomir Kecmanovic in the last eight. It was plain sailing for Djokovic, whose loss to Evans was his first of the season, as he won in only an hour and 10 minutes. It was his first appearance in his home town since 2011, with this the first ATP event in Belgrade since 2012. "It gives you an extra push, an extra motivation, energy to really give your best and leave it all out on the court," Djokovic told atptour.com of playing on home soil. "I think also that made me feel comfortable and...

IPL 2021: Du Plessis, Gaikwad half centuries power CSK to 220/3 against KKR | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Faf du Plessis blazed his way to a masterclass 95 not out after his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad's impressive 64 as Chennai Super Kings posted a big total of 220 for 3 against Kolkata Knight Riders in their IPL match on Wednesday. First, it was Gaikwad who returned to form after a string of poor outings in his first three matches with a composed 42-ball knock that set it up for CSK after KKR opted to field. FDA inspection found problems at factory making Johnson & Johnson vaccine – Times of India

The Baltimore factory contracted to make Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine was dirty, didn't follow proper manufacturing procedures and had poorly trained staff, resulting in contamination of material that was going to be put in the shots, US regulators said Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration released a statement and a 13-page report detailing findings from its recent inspection of the now-idle Emergent Biosciences factory. Agency inspectors said a batch of the bulk drug substance for J&J's single-shot vaccine was contaminated with material used to make Covid-19 vaccines for another Emergent client, AstraZeneca. That batch, reportedly enough to make about 15 million J&J vaccine doses, had to be thrown out. Other problems cited in the inspection report were peelin...
