In Kerala, Modi raises Sabarimala chant, says LDF ‘destabilising sacred places’

WITH THE BJP keen to keep the spotlight on the Sabarimala issue in the final run-up to the Kerala polls on April 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lent his weight to the push by starting his rally Friday in Pathanamthitta with a call for the large gathering to repeat after him an iconic chant from the hill shrine: “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa (I seek refuge in you, lord Ayyappa)”. Not once, but five times. Modi’s unusual call was also significant because it was issued in Konni, which is close to the hill shrine and is one of the two seats — apart from Manjeswaram in Kasaragod — from where the party’s state chief K Surendran is contesting. Surendran was jailed in 2018 for his involvement in the heated protests against the Supreme Court ruling that overturned a traditional ban and ...

In Assam last leg, poll panel bars Himanta from campaigning

The Election Commission (EC) Friday banned Assam Minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma from campaigning for 48 hours in Assam ahead of the third and final phase of the Assembly elections. He was penalised for his remark against Bodoland People’s Front Chairperson Hagrama Mohilary. The EC imposed the ban with immediate effect, which means that Sarma, a star campaigner for the BJP, can no longer seek votes for his party in the state. Campaigning in Assam ends on April 4. The decision was taken on a complaint filed by the Congress, which had alleged that Sarma had “openly threatened” to send Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mohilary to jail by “misusing” the National Investigation Agency. BPF is part of the Congress-led alliance. In his speech at a ...

Growth without job creation has no meaning: Rahul Gandhi | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Growth of the economy is meaningless if it doesn't create jobs, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said. In a conversation with former US ambassador to India Nicholas Burns, Gandhi said that job creation and value addition need to be put in a 'mission mode' in India, with a 15-20 years plan. Accusing the BJP and RSS of a hegemonistic approach in running the country, Rahul said that RSS is virtually the 'only institute' in India today and it has penetrated every other institution. RSS has planted its people in every place that matters, including bureaucracy, the Election Commission, judiciary, media and educational institutes, Rahul said. "There is a wholesale capture of the institutional framework of this country. There is absolute financial and media dominance that the BJP has...

EVM in car of Assam BJP leader, EC orders repoll, suspends four

THE ELECTION Commission (EC) Friday ordered fresh voting in a polling station in Assam’s Ratabari Assembly seat following a controversy over officers transporting an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in a vehicle owned by a BJP candidate. The date of repoll will be announced soon. Behind the politics battle, West Bengal’s slowdown economics

AS West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee fights perhaps her most significant electoral battle, framing her contest is not just BJP vs Trinamool politics — but the state’s economics as well. The anti-incumbency Banerjee faces is as much about local-level corruption and competing ideologies as it is about stalled industrialisation, weak credit growth, a near-freeze in new jobs, low infrastructure development and agriculture spend. In 2019-20, West Bengal’s GSDP growth at 7.26 per cent was higher than the 4.0 per cent national GDP recorded the same year but for four of the five years between 2015-16 to 2019-20, West Bengal’s GSDP growth has been lower than the national figure. RBI data shows that West Bengal is one of the poorest performers on bank credit growth. Betw...

In the letter sent on March 17 to the Punjab Chief Secretary and DGP, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that in 2019-20, the BSF apprehended 58 such labourers from the border districts of Punjab. The letter drew sharp reactions from farm leaders protesting against the Centre’s new agriculture laws.
