Rajasthan ex-health minister holds meeting of Muslim leaders, denies show of strength

Amid growing discontent among Muslims with the Rajasthan government, former Health Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Aimaduddin Ahmad Khan on Sunday brought together Muslim MLAs, newly-elected councillors to local bodies, as well as influential members of the community at his residence. While the programme is being seen as a show of strength by Khan, and a bid to consolidate the Muslim vote, the former minister said it was aimed at bringing together newly-elected members of urban and rural bodies and senior leaders so that new members can “learn” from the “experiences of veterans”. “Many people inquired about the aim of this programme. People believed that it is regarding elections, or is political. Elections are indeed important in democracy but elected representatives also have...

Sonar Bangla will be made not by outsiders but by the people of state, Sougata Roy said (File)Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy on Sunday termed the BJP's manifesto and promises as "hollow" and "jumlas" respectively amid an intense battle for power in West Bengal.Mr Roy's remarks come after Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the BJP's poll manifesto for the West Bengal Assembly elections in Kolkata on Sunday."It is unfortunate that the manifesto for Bengal was released by a Gujarati, not by a local in the presence of a leader from Madhya Pradesh. Vaccines are answer, not one-day lockdowns: Omar Abdullah | India News – Times of India

SRINAGAR: National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Sunday said one-day shutdowns to contain the spread of coronavirus is a "meaningless tokenism" which can lead to complacency, and called for allowing more people to take vaccine against Covid-19. The Madhya Pradesh government had on March 19 announced Sunday lockdowns in Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur till further orders in view of the spurt in coronavirus cases. "With a rampaging virus that has a 2-14 day incubation period this one-day lockdown is meaningless tokenism. All it will do is create a misplaced sense of complacency," Abdullah tweeted. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said vaccines were the answer to the spread of Covid-19 and called for opening up the vaccines to more people. "Vaccines are the answer not one day l...

Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh guest at e-Adda today

CHIEF Minister Amarinder Singh enters his fifth year in power this month, with his grip on the administration and the Congress in Punjab as strong as ever. An affirmation of this came in the recent local polls, which the Congress swept despite the anger over the farm laws that left Singh walking a tightrope. Like the party’s 2016 Assembly poll win, the victory was seen as a personal endorsement of Singh’s leadership. Singh will be the guest at Express e-Adda on Monday, in conversation with Executive Director, Indian Express Group, Anant Goenka and National Opinion Editor, The Indian Express, Vandita Mishra. Not a man to mince words, the Captain has warned the Centre repeatedly of what was at stake if the farmers’ agitation was not handled properly in the border state, while...

16 years in jail, convict dies before case comes to Supreme Court

Shailesh Mapari, a resident of Bardez taluka in Goa, was convicted of killing his friend Sagar Chodankar in September 2004 and sentenced to life imprisonment two years later. His appeal against conviction was dismissed by the Bombay High Court on September 5, 2007. On March 3 this year, his Special Leave Petition (SLP) challenging the High Court order was rejected by a Supreme Court Bench of Justices S K Kaul and Hemant Gupta. However, the SC was “surprised” that Mapari’s case had not been forwarded for remission despite the fact that he had been in prison for over 16 years. Though life imprisonment ordinarily means imprisonment until death, the executive at its discretion can order early release — and many states accordingly consider releasing life convicts after they comp...

Sharad Pawar sidesteps letter fallout: ‘Let CM decide, suggest probe by Julio Ribeiro’

A DAY after former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh levelled serious charges of corruption against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, NCP chief Sharad Pawar placed the onus of tackling the fallout of the allegations against his party’s senior representative in the State Cabinet on Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Pawar suggested an independent probe into the allegations by someone “who commands respect both in the police administration and the public at large” and recommended retired IPS officer Julio Rebeiro for the role — Ribeiro, however, described the situation as “very murky” and said he would refuse any such request. Pawar also acknowledged that there were “serious lapses by certain sections of the Mumbai Police” that has led to the force’s reputation being “...

Speaking to reporters in Patna, Prasad said Thackeray has “lost the moral authority” to govern and should recommend a CBI probe into Param Bir Singh’s allegation that Anil Deshmukh asked Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze, who is in NIA custody in connection with the Ambani house bomb scare case, to collect money from Mumbai’s bars and restaurants. Later, in Denver, Aisam’s coach Robert Davis suggested we switch sides. SHAHID JUDGE: And you won the Denver Challenger. Uptick in positivity rate, experts flag next Covid wave in Delhi

With THE daily positivity rate of Covid-19 cases on the rise in the capital over the past week, experts have raised red flags of a resurgence of the next wave. On Sunday, the city saw over 800 cases for the second day in a row — 823 new cases from 79,714 tests, a positivity rate of 1.03%. With one more person succumbing to the virus, the death toll stands at 10,956. Lalit Kant, former head of the department of epidemiology at ICMR, said, “Positivity rate is an indicator of the kind of testing we are doing. If it is increasing, then we need to further test more people. We need to be a little more proactive. We need to act and nip it in the bud because if not done now, things will go out of hand. In the last one week, the number of cases have been increasing; each day, we are...
