In western UP’s sugarcane belt, hint of new solidarities over farm protests

IF the farmers’ protests in Punjab and Haryana have kept more than an arm’s length from politics, in western UP, they are a crucible for new solidarities in the run-up to an election year. At his home in Muzaffarnagar, 84-year-old farmer leader Ghulam Mohammad Jaula, longtime associate of Mahendra Singh Tikait, recalls the events of January 28, after Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader and Tikait’s son Rakesh broke down. Jaula says Naresh, the elder of the two Tikait brothers, called him and asked him to attend the mahapanchayat in the district on January 29, where thousands of farmers from western UP gathered. “At the mahapanchayat, I told Naresh, you made two mistakes. One, you helped defeat Chaudhary Ajit Singh; two, you killed Muslims. We hugged each other. Bas, dooriyan...

Sharad Pawar meets CM, pressure builds on state Home Minister, Mumbai top cop

TWO DAYS after the arrest of Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Antilia bomb scare case, there are several red faces in the ruling coalition in Maharashtra. On Monday, NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at the Shiv Sena president’s official residence, Varsha, in Mumbai. Sena sources said the two discussed Waze’s arrest and the police’s handling of the bomb scare episode outside Mukesh Ambani’s residence. There is growing disquiet, sources said, over the manner in which the entire case has been handled by Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, sources told The Indian Express. A senior Sena leader told The Indian Express that Pawar and Thackeray agreed that the A...

Centre to Maharashtra amid surge in Covid cases: Plug glaring gaps

From limited contact tracing to lack of effort to map cases and contacts, from patients reporting late to hospitals to a bulk of active cases being in home isolation without proper monitoring — these are among the glaring gaps identified by a Central team of experts deployed to Maharashtra to review the surge in Covid-19 cases in the state. On Monday, the state reported a record 16,620 new cases, accounting for 63.21 per cent of the daily new cases reported in the country. Sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Wednesday hold a meeting with all chief ministers in the backdrop of the rising cases being reported from several districts. On Monday, taking cognisance of the expert team’s report, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan wrote a letter to the state highli...

ON FEBRUARY 27, a day after Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Waze was named Investigating Officer in the Antilia bomb scare case, his team at the Mumbai Police’s Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) visited the housing society where he stays and allegedly took possession of all CCTV footage, The Indian Express has learnt. In a separate move, Waze and his team took CCTV footage and a register from a shop in Thane where fake number plates found on two vehicles involved in the incident were allegedly made. After acing learning outcomes, Nagaur now brings electricity to all rural schools

Heeraram is reserved, but the way he stares at the ceiling does not betray the befuddled look on his face. “Pankhe se hawa aati hain…aur, aur ab pasina bhi nahi aayega (The fan will keep us cool, and we won’t sweat anymore),” the Class 8 student says after being prodded by his teacher twice. Almost a given in most urban schools, the luxury of electricity had eluded almost half the total 2,167 rural primary and upper primary (up to Class 5 and 8) schools in Nagaur, a central district in Rajasthan, for several decades. And Heeraram’s Rajkiya Ucchh Prathmik Vidhalaya at Kantiya dhani (a sparse cluster of rural households) in Khimsar tehsil in the Thar desert, had to wait 66 sweltering summers. Known for its limestone and for pioneering the Panchayati Raj system in 1958, Nagaur...

ROME: Half of Italy's regions have gone into the strictest form of lockdown in a bid to curb the latest spike in coronavirus infections that have brought Covid-19 hospital admissions beyond manageable thresholds. Schools, from day-care centers through university level, and retail shops were shuttered on Monday in nine regions and the autonomous province of Trento, with restaurants open only for take-out. The ``red zones'' were imposed up and down the peninsula, from Lombardy in the north to Puglia in the south, with the Lazio region around the capital Rome in between. The rest of the country was placed under a lesser ``orange'' level lockdown, while lucky Sardinia remained ``white'' thanks to its ability to control new clusters of the virus traced to the variant first identified in Brit...

India vs England: Pressure builds on Shikhar Dhawan to retain his spot | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Ishan Kishan's success as opener may put pressure on Shikhar Dhawan to retain his place in the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup that is scheduled to be held in October-November this year in India. Dhawan, who has been a permanent fixture in India's white-ball squads, has of late been dabbling between two roles -- whether to anchor or play aggressively, both in the Indian team and at his IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals. The left-handed opener was benched for the second T20 International after making a 12-ball four in the first game which India lost. He was replaced by Kishan, who smashed 56 off 32 balls. It is unlikely that Dhawan will return unless Rohit Sharma, who is due to return for the third game after resting for the first two matches, extends his break. Sharma will...
