Accident in Haryana, an amputation later, 22-yr-old’s Tokyo dreams ride on his javelin

At 66.43 m, javelin-thrower Sumit Antil finished seventh at the Indian Grand Prix in Patiala last week. Though the event was won by Tokyo Olympics-bound star Neeraj Chopra, who broke the national record with 88.07 metres, the day’s loudest cheer went up for the 22-year-old Antil. Six years ago, this boy from village Khewra near Haryana’s Sonepat was returning home from a tuition class. A tractor hit his bike, his left leg had to be amputated. After months in hospital, a prosthetic leg revived his sporting dreams, gave him the confidence to compete with national stars and, at the Indian GP, break the world record for para athletes. In Patiala last Saturday, Antil, a 2019 World Para Championship silver medallist, broke compatriot Sandeep Chaudhary’s world record in the javeli...

Our values and principles are in danger. The strength of democracy lies in the robustness of its institutions, and all the institutions have been weakened systematically. Farmers raising pucca structures at protest sites, officials step in

More than three months after they showed up at Delhi’s borders to protest the Centre’s farm laws, farmers and their kin have started raising pucca brick-and-cement structures on the highways at Singhu and Tikri, prompting authorities to intervene. Both construction sites fall on the Haryana side of the border. While work has stopped midway at Singhu, it’s yet to halt at Tikri. Those raising the structures say they are preparing for the harsh summer months. At Tikri border, the first pucca settlement came up on March 12 and a ‘griha pravesh’ was marked by tying an artificial green parrot to the window. Rohtash Gill, a 30-year-old from Jind, among the farmers who built the structure, said; “We have this tradition during house-warming ceremonies in our villages. Around 10-12 o...

In case an owner does not wish to buy a new vehicle, she can even trade the certificate or transfer it. Announced in the Budget for 2021-22, the new policy is set to be notified soon, and plans to create an ecosystem which provides incentives to old vehicle owners to decide in favour of scrapping, even if the vehicle has residual life. “We will make the scrappage certificate tradable. Suppose you are scrapping your vehicle, you can sell the certificate and somebody else can claim it. We have consulted the industry and have incorporated their suggestions also,” Giridhar Aramane, Secre...

Not selective, didn’t know facts: Farmers’ body on reaction to raids against Khaira, Bolllywood figures

Farmer unions have come in for criticism for keeping mum on stopping Sikh jatha to Pakistan and Enforcement Directorate raids on Punjab MLA Sukhpal Khaira while reacting to the Income Tax raids on Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap and actor Taapsee Pannu. Khaira said, “ED raids on my house were due to my support to farmer agitation. Only farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni spoke for me. Farmer unions should come out and defend everybody. Not only me, but every youth who is arrested or being hunted down by the BJP government. Farmer unions can’t be selective. Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu can speak for themselves. Don’t forget BJP’s CAA, church body reminds Christian voters | India News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The Assam Christian Forum (ACF), an ecumenical body of churches in Assam, has appealed to the community to keep in mind the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) that rocked the state since December 2019 and claimed the life of a teenager in police action. The leading Christian body said no Christians have come to Assam from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan because of religious persecution, and thus the Act has no meaning for the community in the state. The forum reminded them of the death of Sam Stafford, the 17-year-old student, who died in police action when anti-CAA protests had reached its peak. The legislation will only have a negative impact on the social fabric of the state, it stressed. "The Constitution has to be protected at any cost. In Assam, a...
