Tirath Singh Rawat is BJP’s surprise pick in Uttarakhand

A DAY after Trivendra Singh Rawat, 60, resigned as Uttarakhand Chief Minister after nearly four years in office, his co-worker for long at the RSS and Lok Sabha member from Garhwal, Tirath Singh Rawat, was elected leader of the BJP legislature party, and took oath as Chief Minister on Wednesday. With less than a year for Assembly elections in the state, 57-year old Tirath has his task cut out — from correcting the ‘mistakes’ which cost Trivendra his job and winning the trust of MLAs and BJP leaders to maintaining coordination between the party organisation and the government, and most importantly, breaking the jinx that no party returns to power in the hill-state. On Wednesday, four hours after party MLAs and senior leaders including MPs arrived at a consensus over his cand...

As Khattar sails through trust vote, Hooda says fallen in eyes of people

The Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP-JJP alliance government in Haryana sailed through the floor test Wednesday, comfortably defeating the no-confidence motion moved against it by the Congress. The motion was defeated following division of votes with Speaker Gian Chand Gupta announced, at the end of a marathon six-hour debate, that 55 members voted against the motion while 32 backed it. Given the effective strength of 88 members in the House, the ruling alliance needed 45 votes to defeat the motion. While Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had moved the motion, demanded secret voting, the Speaker asked the members favouring the motion to rise from their seats following which a headcount was done. Those who voted against the motion inclu...

Michael Vaughan warns Test cricket a ‘joke’ if England rotate in Ashes | Cricket News – Times of India

LONDON: Former captain Michael Vaughan fears Test cricket will become a "joke" if England rotate players in and out of their side during the 2021/22 Ashes in Australia. England coach Chris Silverwood has suggested the team could continue with the controversial rest-and-rotation policy they used in Sri Lanka and India. Joe Root's team beat Sri Lanka 2-0 before losing their four-match series in India 3-1. A number of players including Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali all missed matches at some stage of the tour programme. Many observers felt the rotation policy made the already tough task of winning a series in India even more difficult. But England are set to play a gruelling schedule of up to 17 Tests in 2021, as well as limited-overs matches including...

Five options for openers, nine for fast bowlers in Test cricket: Indian cricket’s happy problem of plenty across formats | Cricket News – Times of India

Indian cricket finds itself in an enviable position these days as far as player options are concerned. It's no secret that the bench strength of Indian cricket looks very good. So much so that someone like T Natarajan went from net bowler to strike bowler in the limited overs series and then the Test series in Australia and did very well. Across all three formats, selectors and the team management have a happy problem of plenty on their hands. Head coach Ravi Shastri in fact recently said in response to a question asked by TOI that India can field two separate playing XIs on the field. With more and more youngsters taking the IPL route to prove their worth, multiple players are now knocking on the doors of the National team in all formats. The competition currently is the staunchest in ...

Kevin Pietersen wants England selectors and management to answer for Test series ‘debacle’ against India | Cricket News – Times of India

RAIPUR: Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has slammed the media for constant questioning of players on the rest and rotation policy adopted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). In the recently-concluded Test series against India, England's rotation policy came under severe criticism and the side has been accused of not prioritising the four-match series which the visitors lost 1-3. And with the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 knockout stages almost clashing with the New Zealand Test series for England, the visiting players are been constantly asked what will be their plans for the English summer. Pietersen wants the same set of questions to be asked from the selectors and management and not from the young players. "So the PLAYERS are now being quizzed by media everyday ab...
