From yatras to shivirs, Baghel replicates his Chhattisgarh model to take on BJP in Assam

IT IS an uphill battle and the opponent is formidable, but the Congress is more confident than it was three months ago and hopes to give incumbent BJP a tough fight in Assam. For the first time in recent history, the party has tasked its chief ministers with election duties to turn the corner in other states — Chhattisgarh’s Bhupesh Baghel in Assam and Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot in Kerala. And Baghel, sources said, is replicating the Chhattisgarh model in Assam. His three key advisors — Vinod Verma, Ruchir Garg and Rajesh Tiwari — are stationed in Assam, and over two dozen teams comprising local Congress leaders from Chhattisgarh have been moved to Assam to oversee the election efforts. This is addition to the campaign already put in place by AICC incharge Jitendra Singh, who...

India score in QS subject ranking: 25 programmes, 12 institutes in top 100

TWENTY-FIVE PROGRAMMES — mostly in engineering — offered by higher education institutions in India rank among the top 100 in the world in their respective subject categories, according to the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Last year, this number stood at 26. While the number of Indian universities/ institutes in the top 100 subject rankings has increased from eight to 12 this year, IIM-Calcutta, which is embroiled in a turf war between its Board and director, suffered its worst-ever ranking. While IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Kozhikode have more or less maintained their positions in the Business and Management Studies category, IIM-Calcutta slipped from the 101-150 band last year to 451-500 band this time. Except one, all...

Delhi reaches out to Dhaka for ties beyond ‘strategic partnership’

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh later this month, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar made a strong outreach to Dhaka Thursday on his bilateral visit, describing the country as a “key neighbour” and a “valued partner” not only “in South Asia but also in the broader Indo-Pacific region”. He said India’s ties with Bangladesh “transcend even our strategic partnership”. The visits have been timed with celebrations to mark 50 years of the 1971 liberation war that led to the birth of Bangladesh. On his first visit since the CAA-NRC issue became a sticking point between the two countries, Jaishankar reached Dhaka Thursday morning and framed Bangladesh’s importance as being central to India’s “neighbourhood first” policy and its growing relevance in t...

Industry: Haryana quota law will slow recovery, cut jobs, bring inspector raj

The move by the Haryana government requiring that locals — born in the state or living there for five years — account for 75% of all hiring by companies in jobs with gross salary under Rs 50,000 per month will potentially slow the post-Covid economic recovery, increase compliance burden and usher in an “inspector raj,” a cross-section of industry representatives have told The Indian Express. On Tuesday, the state administration notified the Haryana State Employment of Local Candidates Act 2020, which requires all companies, LLPs, trusts, societies and partnership firms with more than 10 employees to follow these local employment requirements and specifically empower the district administrations to enforce the new regulations through inspections with a 24-hour notice. The le...

India vs England: Rohit Sharma finally gets ‘consistent’ run after seven years | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Rohit Sharma has been considered one of the stalwarts of Indian batting for over a decade, but quite surprisingly this is only the second time in his 13-year international career that he has played six Tests in a row that India have played. The first time this happened for Sharma was in late 2013 and early 2014 when he had made his Test debut after playing limited-overs cricket for six years. Sharma played two Tests against West Indies in India, then flew to South Africa for two Tests and then went to New Zealand for two Test matches in 2013-14. After that, however, the batsman had been in and out of the Test side due to inconsistent performances. Sharma's first two Tests in 2013 produced centuries and set him on track to achieving greater heights, i.e. one who was ready to r...

Indian women’s hockey team ends Germany tour with 1-2 defeat | Hockey News – Times of India

DUSSELDORF: The Indian women's hockey team ended its tour of Germany with yet another defeat, going down 1-2 in the fourth and final match on Thursday. Naomi Heyn (29th) Charlotte Stapenhorst (37th) scored for the world number three side before Lalremsiami (51st) pulled one back for the visitors late in the game. It was India's fourth defeat in as many matches as the team stayed winless in the tour. After rain delayed the start of proceedings, Germany found a lively tempo to their attack and earned a penalty corner with just ten minutes on the clock. Savita and her defence stood firm to see off the threat. India, too, were awarded a PC just minutes later. But Germany's defensive line ensured that the score remained goalless after the first quarter. With barely a minute left before the e...

India vs England: Hosts ‘completely’ out skilled visitors, admits Vaughan | Cricket News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: While Michael Vaughan had criticised the pitch in the pink-ball game, the former England skipper admitted that India outplayed the visitors on the opening day of the fourth and final Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. Spinners Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin spun a web over visitors as England was bundled out for 205 in the first innings. Vaughan praised the hosts and slammed a very "average" batting by England in the first innings on day one of the final Test. "India today with the ball showed why they are so good in these conditions ... Pitch did very little for 60 overs and they completely out-skilled & out-thought England ... !! High class ... England with the Bat were very very average," Vaughan tweeted. India today with the ball showed why they are so...

Man’s death at tractor rally: Delhi HC asks UP police to hand over post-mortem video

The Delhi High Court Thursday directed UP authorities to handover original X-ray plates and video of the post-mortem of Navreet Singh (25), who died during the tractor rally on January 26, to Delhi Police on Friday afternoon. It further asked Delhi Police to retain them in safe custody till further orders. Police said Navreet died when his tractor overturned after it rammed a barrier at ITO and not because of firing. A petition filed by his grandfather Hardeep Singh claimed Navreet was shot by policemen due to which he lost control of the tractor. Delhi Police said it would have no objection sharing a copy of the post-mortem video ...
