India now has 70,756 confirmed cases of COVID-19. According to the health ministry, the number of active confirmed cases in the country stands at 46,008 as of Tuesday morning. The ministry has been updating its figures once a day since May 6. The ministry also reported that there have been 2,293 deaths due to the viral infection, while 22,454 people have been cured/discharged or have migrated. The confirmed cases include 111 foreigners.
A total of 87 deaths were reported since Monday morning, of which 36 were in Maharashtra, 20 in Gujarat, six each in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, five in West Bengal and one each in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the health ministry’s data, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 23,401 followed by Gujarat (8,541), Tamil Nadu (8,002), Delhi (7,233), Rajasthan (3,988), Madhya Pradesh (3,785) and Uttar Pradesh (3,573). West Bengal has 2,063 COVID-19 cases, Andhra Pradesh 2,018 and Punjab 1,877, while Telangana has 1,275 cases.
Of the 2,293 fatalities, Maharashtra accounts for 868 deaths, Gujarat comes second with 513, followed by Madhya Pradesh (221), West Bengal (190), Rajasthan (113). Uttar Pradesh’s death toll is 80, Delhi’s 73, Tamil Nadu’s 53 and Andhra Pradesh’s 45. Karnataka and Punjab have recorded 31 deaths each, while Telangana has reported 30.
Independent trackers are reporting a slightly higher death toll than the health ministry. According to Worldometer, India has 70,827 confirmed cases and that 2,294 people have died because of COVID-19.
Globally, cases have crossed the 4 million mark. Across the world, there have now been 4,177,584 confirmed cases around the world as of Tuesday morning.
According to the Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll due to COVID-19 stands at 286,330.
In many countries, official data includes only deaths reported in hospitals, not those in homes or nursing homes.
The US has recorded 1,347,881 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. Spain is in second place with 268,143 cases, followed by the UK (224,332).
Deaths in the US climbed to 80,684, the highest in any country, followed by the UK (32,141), Italy (30,739), Spain (26,383) and France (26,646). The death toll has also been high in Brazil (11,653), Belgium (8,707), Germany (7,661), Iran (6,685). In China, 4,637 people have died due to COVID-19.
