Ranji Trophy final | What went behind Mumbai’s 42nd title: Songs, dance, 15-day camp in Alur, 46 review meetings and flashback videos

Mumbai’s 42nd title was not made in a day. It was the result of meticulous planning, strategizing and hard work over the last ten months. From 46 review meetings and a pre-season residential camp in Alur near Bangalore to dance and songs competitions and storytelling exercises before the final against Vidarbha, the journey was mixed with fun, sweat and brainstorming, with heroes sprouting in every step. The seasoned Ajinkya Rahane was the face of their campaign. But there were others too. Like coach Omkar Salvi. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) wanted to hire his brother Avishkar, the former fast bowler, as coach, but in the end it turned out to be his brother, a former Railways player and the assistant bowling coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. He had never played a first-class game—fe...

Ranji Trophy semifinals: ‘Khadoos’ Mumbai deliver as a unit, Tamil Nadu left to rue wrong decisions from the word go

Sulakshan Kulkarni, Tamil Nadu coach who boasted he had Mumbai cricket ‘on his fingertips’, knew his team’s fate was sealed the moment his captain decided to bat on a damp, green wicket at the toss on Day 1. It was the first in a series of blunders the veteran domestic coach listed that saw his team succumb to an innings-and-70-run defeat. Kulkarni’s former team, Mumbai, reached their 48th Ranji Trophy final where they will play either Vidarbha or Madhya Pradesh starting Sunday. Tamil Nadu’s sorry semifinal ended the same way it started: Their batsmen staring at the pitch as if it had demons that danced only when they were in the middle, a look of disbelief plastered on their faces and reluctant walks back to the dugout. WPL 2024: Yastika Bhatia, Amelia Kerr shine as Mumbai Indians put on a stroke-making masterclass to thump RCB

On a day when Mumbai Indians restricted a strong Royal Challengers Bangalore batting line-up to 131/6 and then comfortably won the match, a large part of the credit must of course go to the bowlers. But the highlight of the night at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was the exhibition of strokeplay from MI batters. In their chase of 133, Mumbai batters hit 19 fours and three sixes for a total of 94 runs through boundaries, a whopping 70.67% of their total. That Mumbai had four all rounders in their top five of the batting order, who bowled 14 overs between them, was another reminder of their elite core of multidimensional cricketers. Leading the side once again in the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt rotated her bowlers around nicely to never let RCB gain any batting momen...

India vs England One-Off Test: Pooja Vastrakar delivers the telling blows on Day 3 as Harmanpreet Kaur and Co register record-breaking win

In the pre-match press conferences, captains Heather Knight and Harmanpreet Kaur both advocated playing for the win within four days, with the former saying there might be a need to perhaps artificially force the pace to ensure that yet another women’s Test doesn’t end in a draw. And so, before play began on Day 3, it was interesting that Harmanpreet chose to declare India’s second innings overnight despite being on the cusp of a half-century herself. There was plenty of time still left in the match but the Indian captain felt making use of whatever early morning assistance was there on the pitch to force a win, was more crucial than a first Test fifty or century for herself. As it turned out, after lasting 35.3 overs in the first innings for 136, England folded within 27.3 overs for 131...

India vs New Zealand: How India’s Fab Five hit every Kiwi curveball out of the park

Rohit Sharma springs to his feet. Virat Kohli brings the bat closer to his chest and gives it a twirl. Shreyas Iyer taps the bat violently on the ground. KL Rahul hangs his bat in the air. As for Shubman Gill, he remains still. The subtle motions, as the bowler runs in, are often an indicator that something special might happen on the incoming ball.On Wednesday, as India overcame nerves and a gritty New Zealand by 70 runs to enter the World Cup final, it almost unfailingly meant Rohit lofting the ball over covers, Kohli unleashing a bottom-handed whip, Iyer walloping the ball into the stands, Rahul clearing the square boundary and Gill gloriously caressing the ball through midwicket. ‘I have to give credit to Rahul [Dravid] bhai for backing me’: Rohit Sharma

It was a tricky question thrown at Rohit Sharma. ’Is this the most dominant Indian ODI team?’.The obvious truthful answer is yes, but even the straight-talking Rohit treaded carefully. He paused, gathered his thoughts, and spoke slowly: “I wasn’t part of the 2011 team. I don’t know which team is better. Hard to say. I can’t say 2019 is better than 2023 or not.” So far so (diplomatically) good. He then nailed the key factor of this team as he saw it as the captain. “What I can say is that the role clarity is very clear in this World Cup team.” But he was too smart to leave it hanging there. “I am not saying there was no role clarity in 2019; just that I wasn’t part of the management then. I would say all teams I was part of were dominant.” Follow all the action from the Cricket World Cup...

Ruthless Men in Blue demolish listless Islanders

Wrecker in chief: The Sri Lankan batters found Shami too hot to handle and fell like nine pins. | Photo Credit: EMMANUAL YOGINI Like biting into a bun-maska dunked in Irani tea in those old Parsi restaurants in this teeming metropolis, India revealed a similar ease as it tucked into a hapless Sri Lanka here on Thursday. The Men in Blue’s seventh triumph in this World Cup was mounted upon muscular batting and relentless fast bowling and the fans at the Wankhede Stadium relished every second of a lop-sided contest that sealed the host’s semifinal berth. Huge margin Having posted 357 for eight, Rohit Sharma’s men bundled out Sri Lanka for 55 in 19.4 overs and won by 302 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj dismissed Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne respectively when the batters we...

‘The first time I met Jhulan Di I didn’t even reach up to her knee’: Saika Ishaque

Mumbai Indians spinner Saika Ishaque recalled her first meet with her team’s bowling coach Jhulan Goswami when she was a budding cricketer and said in jest that she did not even reach her knee. In a video shared on the MI Twitter handle, Ishaque said, “The first time I met Jhulan Di, I didn’t even reach up to her knee. I have known her since I was that young. Jhulan Di’s support means the world to me.” Recalling her chat with Goswami, the left-arm spinner said, “I have been playing cricket since I was a kid with the boys. What we call ‘Gullyy Cricket’… Back then, I didn’t imagine girls playing cricket (formally). My father’s friend noticed that I play well… He made me join the club. Ranji Trophy 2023: Stuck on 384, level with Maharashtra in first innings, Mumbai might miss quarterfinals

Maharashtra have almost tripped up Mumbai’s chances of making the Ranji quarters as both teams finished on identical first inning score of 384. It led to an unexpected twist at Brabourne. There were only 9 previous instances in Ranji Trophy where both teams ended up having their first-innings scores level. And Mumbai, needing three points to make it to the quarterfinals, only had to surpass Maharashtra’s total of 384 and force a draw. However, despite Prasad Pawar’s maiden century (145) and Tanush Kotian’s 93, they managed only 384. When the 8th wicket fell Mumbai needed 44 more runs with Kotian fighting the lone battle. Then Mohit Avasthi fell, they needed 13 more runs. But with the scores level, left-arm spinner Vicky Otswal bowled Kotian to dash Mumbai’s hopes. With no team getting t...
