IND vs ENG: Who will replace Jasprit Bumrah in India playing XI for Ranchi Test against England?

With a resounding 434-run win over England in the third Test in Rajkot, India head into the next match with a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Having bounced back from a defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad, India have been led by brilliant individual performances with both bat and ball. On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah has led the wicket-taking charts with his exemplary display in all three Tests thus far. Bumrah’s exhaustive work is likely to call for a break in the upcoming Test in Ranchi, in line with the workload management program. In the second Test in Visakhapatnam, India had rested seamer Mohammed Siraj after his long and continuous run across formats. EXCLUSIVE: In letter to top cricketers, BCCI secretary Jay Shah warns ‘skipping domestic red-ball games will have severe implications’

BOARD OF Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Friday wrote to top cricketers — centrally contracted as well as India A — warning them that domestic cricket remains a “critical yardstick for selection” to the national team and non-participation in it will have “severe implications”. The reason for the communication, according to the letter, was “the concerning trend of players prioritising the IPL over domestic red-ball cricket”. “There is a recent trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport,” Shah said in th...

We are not going to tolerate any other tantrums: Jay Shah says centrally contracted players will have to play domestic red-ball cricket

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday made it clear that India’s centrally contracted players will have to mandatorily play in the domestic red ball tournaments and the board will not tolerate any excuses. “They have been informed on phone already and I’m going to write letters as well that if your chairman of selectors, your coach and your captain are asking for it then you will have to play red-ball cricket,” Shah said as quoted by PTI. Shah, however, said that the players’ participation in these domestic tournaments will happen in accordance with the guidance from the national cricket academy. “Whatever advice we get from the NCA — say suppose somebody’s body is not able to handle both white-ball and red-ball cricket — so we do not want to impose anything in that regard. (It applies t...

‘Opposition teams start panicking a bit and maybe go into a defensive mode early on’: Rohit Sharma’s aggressive captaincy lauded by former Australian legends

Rohit Sharma’s aggressive captaincy has played a key role in India’s domination of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 league stage. The Indian skipper has led from the front, both with his bat and with his tactical nous, and has been instrumental in his team’s consecutive victories. Rohit’s aggressiveness has also been reflected in his captaincy. He has not been afraid to take risks, and has often made bold decisions that have paid off handsomely. India, in pursuit of its third World Cup title, beat Australia and Pakistan with ease, then trounced England South Africa and New Zealand and ultimately beat the Netherlands on Sunday to make it nine out of nine wins in the league stage. Rohit’s aggressive captaincy has helped to create a winning mindset in the Indian team, and this has not gone u...

‘I want him to be carried on the shoulders’: Virender Sehwag wants Virat Kohli to be celebrated like Sachin Tendulkar after ODI World Cup

Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar are two of the greatest batters in cricket history. Both players have broken numerous records and achieved incredible feats throughout their careers. Despite the different eras in which they played, both Kohli and Tendulkar have achieved incredible feats. Tendulkar holds the record for most runs scored in both Test and ODI cricket and most centuries scored in both game formats. Kohli is the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in both Test and ODI cricket. He also has the record for most centuries scored in T20I cricket. The duo played together during India’s memorable 2011 World Cup campaign, where a young Kohli had lifted Tendulkar on his shoulders after beating Sri Lanka in the final. Selectors, team management banking on KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah to be fit and running in Asia Cup, World Cup

In the iconic movie The Shawshank Redemption, there are a couple of famous lines about “hope”. In one of their conversations, Red (played by Morgan Freeman) says, “Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” In reply, Andy Dufresne (played by Tim Robbins), says “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”The Indian cricket team’s selection for the Asia Cup follows a similar theme. Captain Rohit Sharma and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar “hope” that their three key players – KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, who are coming back after long injury layoffs – will hit the ground running and be at their best during the World Cup at home. Not to forget, Rohit Sharma’s team will be clocking a lot of air miles in the upcoming tournament, cov...

‘One batting slot does not make much difference’: Sourav Ganguly on No 4 position

Former captain Sourav Ganguly on Monday said India have a lot of options for the No 4 position in their ODI side, and stressed that one position alone will not win important tournaments like the World Cup. Ganguly said the team management should zero in on one player and give him a long rope at the No 4 slot. “India has enormous talent. I keep hearing about this…we don’t have this or that but we have too much and that is the problem that we cannot decide. “The No 4…Rahul (Dravid), selectors and Rohit (Sharma) need to decide that ‘this is my No 4 and I will continue with him’. One batting slot does not make much of a difference,” Ganguly told the media here while being appointed as the brand ambassador of the real estate company Casagrand. Downplaying the debate over the No 4 position, G...

‘Haven’t groomed anybody, selectors neither have vision nor cricketing sense’: Dilip Vengsarkar slams BCCI

Citing the example of Shikhar Dhawan’s elevation as the captain of the Indian team on the tour of Sri Lanka in 2021, former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar slammed the Indian selectors and suggested that they lacked vision in the past. “The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six-seven years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (when tours overlapped and main players were unavailable); it is where you can groom the future captain,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times. “You haven’t groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, i...

Why was Rahane selected? With young guns injured, out of form or unconvincing, selectors forced to go with old guard in WTC final

The squad for India’s World Test Championship final looks more like a last dance for many who have been part of the team for over a decade now. By recalling Ajinkya Rahane for the final to be played against Australia at The Oval from June 7, the selectors have given an opportunity for senior pros, who have been instrumental in India’s rise to the No.1 ranking in Tests, a chance to win the ultimate crown. Ajinkya Rahane’s form in IPL 2023 puts him in contention for World Test Championship final spot

Few days before the start of the ongoing Indian Premier League season as Chennai Super Kings played an intra-squad practice fixture, one of the notable absentees was Ajinkya Rahane. In a game where the likes of Shivam Dube, Devon Conway and Moeen Ali batted twice, Rahane didn’t get an opportunity to bat. Instead, he headed to the practice facilities at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where he faced a few throwdowns and batted against net bowlers. He cut a lonely figure that day as he quietly trained away from all the attention as even the support staff were engrossed in what was happening in the middle. That looks like a long time ago now. After 33 matches into the IPL, Rahane is sitting at the top of the strike rate charts (189) for any batsman who has faced a minimum of 100 deliveries. Thi...

Specialist doctors have also been consulted by the BCCI for Iyer and they will take a call on whether he needs surgery. India vs Australia: PMs Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi take to the field, recall a Sydney double ton by Ravi Shastri

AHMEDABAD: A little after 9 am, as Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese finished their open-buggy lap of the ground, scores of ground staff sprinted towards the turf. Within minutes, the temporary stage set for the leaders and the floor laid for the folk artists disappeared. The commentators and their cameras returned to the outfield, and the captains on the central square positioned themselves for the toss. Cricket had reclaimed its territory and the spotlight was back on the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The morning, in a way, was a game of two halves – high-profile cricket diplomacy was followed by an intense battle of attrition between Indian spinners and the day’s centurion Usman Khawaja, resulting in Australia finishing at 255/4. True to the theme of In...
