‘It’s been a difficult six months for me’: Jordan Henderson says after completing his move to Ajax from Al-Ettifaq

Six months after joining Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, Jordan Henderson has terminated his contract and has joined Ajax on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 33-year-old had joined Al-Ettifaq from Liverpool last summer on a three-year contract worth a reported £350,000 a week. “I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al-Ettifaq with immediate effect. It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family,” Henderson wrote on social media. “I want to take this opportunity to thank the club and the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from day one. I’ll keep watching and hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.” Amsterdam! So happy to be here. Former European champions Ajax and Marseille in Europa League group with Brighton and AEK Athens

Former European champions Ajax and Marseille were drawn Friday to play Premier League club Brighton and AEK Athens in one of the toughest Europa League groups. Brighton will be playing in the competition for the first time. Ajax won the UEFA Cup, the Europa League’s predecessor, in 1992 to become the first club to win the three major European trophies of the time. Liverpool, a three-time winner of the second-tier European competition, was drawn to face Union Saint-Gilloise, Toulouse and LASK of Austria, while Europa Conference League champion West Ham will play Olympiakos, Freiburg and TSC of Serbia. Roma, coached by Jose Mourinho, will be trying to reach its third straight European final in a group with Slavia Prague, Sheriff and Servette, while 2021 Europa League champion Villarreal l...

Edwin Van der Sar quits as Ajax director general after club finishes 3rd in Dutch league

Edwin van der Sar is stepping down as director general of Ajax after the team finished a disappointing third in the Dutch league, missing out on a Champions League berth for next season. Van der Sar, a former goalkeeper for teams including Ajax and Manchester United, as well as the Dutch national team, had been a member of the board of the Amsterdam club since late 2012 and director general since 2016. His contract ran until mid-2025. “After nearly 11 years on the board, I’m exhausted,” Van der Sar said in a statement Tuesday. “It doesn’t feel good to have to make imminent decisions about the future of this beautiful club. Hence my decision to stop now.” No successor was named. The club said the supervisory board has asked Van der Sar to continue work until August. “We wanted Edwin ...

Ajax Amsterdam-Groningen Dutch league clash called off after nine minutes after smoke bombs thrown onto pitch

Amsterdam: The Dutch league clash between Ajax Amsterdam and already-relegated Groningen was halted and then called off with only nine minutes on the clock, after fireworks were twice thrown onto the pitch on Sunday. In the sixth minute of the clash in Groningen smoke bombs were thrown onto the field. Shortly afterwards, a supporter ran onto the pitch with a banner calling for the ouster of the Groningen board, which saw the referee take the two teams off the pitch. When they returned, smoke bombs were thrown again, leading to the match being called off, in line with new Dutch football guidelines brought in earlier last month. It followed crowd violence in the Dutch Cup semi-final between Feyenoord and Ajax Amsterdam in early April when a cigarette lighter thrown from the crowd hit Ajax...

Ajax fires coach Alfred Schreuder after winless streak

Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder has been fired after only half a season at the Dutch powerhouse following a string of seven matches without a victory for the four-time European champions. Schreuder, who took over the team when Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United, was sacked after his team could only draw 1-1 with Volendam on Thursday night, with Ajax citing “disappointing results and lack of development within the team.” “It’s a painful but necessary decision,” said club director Edwin van der Sar. “We had faith in Alfred to change things. It became clear to us that he could not turn the tide.” Defending champion Ajax is fifth in the top flight Eredivisie, seven points behind league leader Feyenoord. No replacement for Schreuder was immediately announced. !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s) {if(f...
