Former Adidas owner tied up and beaten in burglary – Times of India

PARIS: Former French minister and scandal-ridden tycoon Bernard Tapie, once the owner of Adidas, was attacked along with his wife during a midnight burglary of their home, police said Sunday. The couple were asleep when four men broke into the house in Combs-la-Ville near Paris around 00:30 AM Sunday (2230 GMT Saturday), beat them and tied them up with electrical cords before making off with their loot. Dominique Tapie managed to free herself and made her way to a neighbour's home, from where she called the police. Slightly injured from several blows to the face, she was taken to hospital for a check-up. "She is doing well," Tapie's grandson Rodolphe Tapie told AFP. During the burglary the perpetrators "pulled her by the hair because they wanted to know where the treasure was", the mayo...

175 personnel killed in 10 years: Why Bastar still remains a Maoist bastion

Since the 2010 Chintalnar massacre, the Dantewada-Sukma-Bijapur axis has claimed the lives of more than 175 security force personnel, besides several civilians. While the Chintalnar encounter saw 76 CRPF men killed, the latest encounter in Bijapur Saturday led to the death of 22 security personnel. A look at the data on Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh shows that most attacks and casualties have happened between March and July. Sources say this is because the CPI (Maoist) usually launches its tactical counter-offensive campaign between February and the end of June. This campaign involves aggressive military operations against security forces before the monsoons—that make movement difficult—hit the region. The key concern is that security forces are still struggling in this r...

Chhattisgarh Maoist attack: How a massive security operation was planned and how it went wrong

Lying on a bed on Sunday morning at the Bijapur district hospital, a shrapnel injury on his leg and a shallow gun wound on his arm, the Chhattisgarh Police jawan can’t stop going over the events of the previous day in his mind. He has now come to an overwhelming conclusion: he and his colleagues had walked into a trap laid out by the Maoists. “We didn’t find anything when we reached the spot we were asked to reach. Once we started returning, they ambushed us. There were so many of them, so suddenly… it had to be planned,” he said. Sources in the know of the operational plan told The Indian Express that 10 teams were launched in all — two from Sukma district and eight from three camps in Bijapur. It was a massive operation that included the STF, DRG and District Force of the...

In Kerala’s din, a mother seeking justice, a wife calling for peace

From the distance it looks like a cross. But it’s just a long pole with a crossbar, on both sides of which hang two small, white frocks with marks that look like blood stains. Accompanying it are half-a-dozen people who make up the campaign team of the woman who has been dubbed the ‘Walayar mother’, and who is contesting as a candidate from Dharmadam, the CPM fortress from where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is standing for re-election. Long way from home, in Walayar, a town near Palakkad on the Tamil Nadu border, she hands out pamphlets — to everyone, in shops, those walking past her. They stop, listen, but few engage with her. Making a halt at a bus stop on the highway connecting Dharmadam to Kozhikode in the south and Mangalore in the north, she says in simple, clear M...

Five rallies, one road show, minor blip: Himanta Biswa Sarma’s extra day out

WITH THE Election Commission cutting down the ban on him campaigning from 48 hours to 24, senior BJP leader and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma counted down the end of Assam’s poll campaign with a series of rallies. The ban, following Sarma’s threat to put Bodoland People’s Front chief Hagrama Mohilary behind bars on an NIA case, had been announced on Friday. After it ended on the completion of 24 hours, on Saturday evening, with the EC accepting his apology, Sarma took to the streets almost immediately, with a massive rally in the state capital Guwahati. One of the key leaders of the BJP campaign, and a possible CM candidate, Sarma spent Sunday addressing a road show at Bijni, followed by public meetings at Dudhnoi, Borkhetri and Hajo. Finally, in the afternoon, Sarma c...

Teacher, manager, mountaineer… now, first cricketer from Ladakh in J&K team

HE HAS trained as a monk, worked as a physical education teacher, been a sales manager at a Decathlon sports outlet, and often taken up the job of managing trekking camps during the tourist season. But that’s not what Skalzang Kalyan Dorje is excited to talk about over the phone from his home in Leh’s Tukla village, shielding his voice from the cold wind howling outside. “There was even a time when I used to run after goats as a herder. Now I’m the first person from Ladakh to play domestic cricket…I represented Jammu and Kashmir at Syed Mushtaq T20 Tournament,” says the 31-year-old allrounder. Had it not been for the pandemic that caused the cancellation of the 2020-2021 Ranji Trophy season — the T20 tournament was held instead — Dorje may also have become the first player ...

The Tribune report, dated January 3, had stated: “It took just Rs 500, paid through Paytm, and 10 minutes in which an ‘agent’ of the group running the racket created a ‘gateway’ for this correspondent and gave a login ID and password. Lo and behold, you could enter any Aadhaar number in the portal, and instantly get all particulars that an individual may have submitted to the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), including name, ad...

Covid vaccine: Why India’s second wave has sparked global concerns | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In mid-March, 2021, the world wanted to believe that the worst of Covid-19 was already behind. In India too, the focus had largely shifted from containment to vaccinations. Immunisation drives were picking up in almost every country. And the world was looking up to India's production capacity for a steady supply, specially to the poorer countries. India had given out millions of doses as aids to neighbours and friendly countries, shipped out in commercial contracts or to the UN's Covax program. By mid-March, India had exported over twice the number of doses it had administered at home. Modi government's Vaccine Maitri initiative seemed well on track. But then the story changed. The daily infection rate, that was on a steady decline, took a reverse turn, almost with a vengeanc...

21 active cases, JNU may revise phased re-opening

With 21 active cases of Covid-19 among students who have been on campus, the JNU administration has cautioned that it may revise its phased re-opening guidelines if the number of cases continue to rise. The university has been following a very gradual phased re-opening of its facilities for its students. In its 10th and 11th phases of re-opening last month, it had allowed third-year PhD students, and PWD Bachelor and Masters students — who require access to laboratories and other facilities — and final-year MPhil students — who need to submit their dissertation — to enter the campus. Various facilities in the campus, such as reading rooms, canteens, eateries, and service facilities have also been re-opening in a gradual phased manner. In the meantime, for several months now...
