Maharashtra government suspends MTR Field Director Srinivas Reddy over suicide of forest officer

THE Maharashtra government on Wednesday placed Melghat Tiger Reserve (MTR) Field Director Srinivas Reddy under suspension. Reddy’s suspension has come in the wake of the death by suicide of Harisal Range Forest Officer Deepali Chavan in Melghat on March 26. Chavan had left behind a suicide note, in which she accused Gugamal Forest Division Deputy Conservator of Forest Vinod Shivkumar of harassment and mentioned that she was taking the extreme step because of the harassment. In the letter, Chavan had mentioned that Reddy had failed to take action against Shivkumar despite her bringing the harassment to his notice. In the letter, however, she had also thanked Reddy for support, saying she felt safe when he was around. She had said that only Shivkumar should be held responsibl...

As per Patel, some medical students of first year were declared pass after changing their answer sheets in the reassessment process. I have trust in my shots, says confident Dominic Thiem | Tennis News – Times of India

His feet were heavy, but Dominic Thiem was feeling light. That's where he finished 2020, a year in which he clinched his maiden Grand Slam crown. The intent in the home run, only a couple of months after the biggest win of his career, was unadorned. But with just five match wins in 2021, one of them courtesy a retirement, the Austrian's show is lacking in thematic balance. The World No. 4 had a disappointing Australian Open in February, as the season got off to a late start. An indolent fourth-round loss to Grigor Dimitrov. In his next outing, in Doha, he won a round, before crashing at his first hurdle in Dubai. It was that recital of 12 months ago, where he fell to Novak Djokovic in the final at Melbourne Park, 4-6 in the fifth set, that held a mirror to his ability. His best, the 27-...

For NIA, Waze’s Hiran murder motive: ‘panic’ over losing probe

WITH growing evidence linking arrested Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze to the alleged murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) — probing the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare case — is veering towards the conclusion that Hiran could have been killed after Waze “panicked” that the probe was being taken away from him and could be given to the Central agency, sources said. Though the NIA is yet to get the report of the final forensic analysis done on Hiran’s body, the agency believes that the car decor shop owner was smothered, and not strangled, sources said. Hiran was allegedly in possession of the Mahindra Scorpio which was found outside Ambani’s house in Mumbai on February 25 with gelatin sticks and a threat note. According to the NIA, Waze had...

China Coronavirus News: China dodges WHO’s call for further probe into Wuhan lab leak theory of coronavirus | World News – Times of India

BEIJING: China on Wednesday called for expanding the search for the origins of the coronavirus in other countries, mainly America, as it sought to sidestep the WHO chief's assertion that further probe is required on allegations that the deadly virus may have leaked from a bio-lab in Wuhan, saying he may have not been accurately quoted. Releasing the much-awaited report of an experts team that probed the origin of Covid-19 after visiting the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, World Health Organisation chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reopened the Trump era allegation, saying that it required further probe. "Although the team has concluded that a laboratory leak is the least likely hypothesis, this requires further investigation, poten...

Amid Covid surge, third vaccination round rolls out today for key group

This round of vaccination, two and a half months after the country began its Covid-19 vaccination drive, will make the largest age cohort eligible so far for phase-wise administration of the vaccine. It will cover the population which is at the highest risk: 90 per cent of Covid deaths in India have been in the category of those above the age of 45. Of the total active caseload of 5.52 lakh cases, five states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and Chhattisgarh — cumulatively account for 79.30 per cent of the cases. ...

Localised lockdowns in second wave set to hit services recovery

The localised impact of the fresh wave of rising Covid-19 cases could potentially dent the uptick in business activity, especially in the services sector. High frequency indicators have begun to reflect some moderation due to administrative clampdown in a bunch of districts including Maharashtra and Gujarat. Mobility indicators, such as the Apple mobility index, which capture the impact of rising cases at a localised level, indicate that while movement has normalised across all major cities through February and March 2021, there has been a slight blip in locations such as Mumbai and Pune. The Google mobility index, which too reflected a steady improvement over the last few months, shows a moderation in the retail and recreation sectors this March, partly tied to the increas...

MINNEAPOLIS: The convenience store cashier who sold cigarettes to George Floyd and was handed a counterfeit $20 bill in return took the stand Wednesday at Officer Derek Chauvin's murder trial as prosecutors laid out the sequence of events that led to Floyd's ill-fated arrest outside. Christopher Martin, 19, said that as he stood on the curb a short time later, his hands on his head as watched Floyd's arrest, he felt "disbelief - and guilt." "If I would've just not tooken the bill, this could've been avoided," Martin testified, joining the burgeoning list of onlookers who said they felt a sense of helplessness and lingering guilt over the Black man's death last May. In a handwritten letter addressed to the governor of his prison which was posted to social media by his team on Wednesday, Navalny said his daily requests for a doctor of his choice to examine him and for proper medicine for his problems to be provided had been ignored.
