Two Dalit girls found dead in a field in Unnao, third critical

BODIES OF two Dalit girls, aged 13 and 16, were found in the family’s field in Unnao district on Wednesday evening, along with a 17-year-old in a serious condition. The elder girls were sisters, with the 13-year-old their cousin. The police said they suspected it to be a case of poisoning, with no signs of struggle at the site and no injury marks found prima facie on the girls. The brother of the girls claimed they had been found with their hands and feet tied up. While the younger girls were declared dead on arrival at hospital, the 17-year-old continues to be critical. Speaking to reporters, the brother said, “They had gone to the farm to collect grass. Today, they got late returning, so we went to look for them. We found them tied up, with clothes like their chunni.” IG ...

Congress sweeps Punjab civic polls; farm law heat singes Akalis, BJP

Amidst widespread support in Punjab for farmers agitating against the new agricultural laws passed by the Centre, the ruling Congress Wednesday recorded a landslide victory in the civic body elections. The party won 1,399 of the 2,165 municipal wards, and six of the eight municipal corporations, with the result of the Mohali corporation postponed for Thursday. The BJP’s hopes that a good performance in the urban areas would ease some pressure off it on the laws were dashed. Having split from long-time ally Akali Dal, it lost even strongholds like Pathankot, Sujanpur, Batala and Abohar, winning only 49 wards. The Independents, who won from 329 wards, finished second behind the Congress. The Congress won 1,128 of the 1,815 wards in municipal councils, and 271 of the 350 munic...

Getting China to pull back behind Finger 8 a huge success for us: Northern Army chief

Northern Army Commander Lt General Y K Joshi said Wednesday that getting the People’s Liberation Army to withdraw beyond the Indian claim line at Finger 8 on the north bank of Pangong Tso is a “huge success for India”. In an email interview to The Indian Express, Lt General Joshi said the purpose behind occupying the heights along Kailash Range on the southern bank of Pangong Tso had been achieved with the disengagement on the northern bank of the lake. He said a “misperception is being created” to say that India had lost out by accepting the no-patrolling buffer zone between Fingers 4 and 8. “The fact is that it is a huge success for us. Firstly, PLA is moving back beyond our claim line that is Finger 8. Secondly, this agreement denies them the advantage of patrolling till...

DU dreams to labour activism: Nodeep Kaur’s arc that ended in arrest

BEFORE SHE became known as a labour rights activist, following her arrest in Haryana on January 12, Nodeep Kaur (24) — now at the centre of an international campaign for her release — just wanted to complete her education. After finishing her Class 12 in 2018, she wanted to enrol for BA (Punjabi) at Delhi University (DU), but started working to support her family — her father and mother are labourers, and she has three sisters. After working at a telecalling company in Delhi for some time, Kaur joined a mask manufacturing unit in Kundli, in Sonepat district of Haryana, in July last year. In October, she moved to a glass manufacturing unit in the area. It was around this time that Kaur began her association with the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, a local labour rights organisati...

M J Akbar defamation case: Verdict builds on Vishaka ruling, gives new legal shield to women

By ruling that “the right of reputation cannot be protected at the cost of the right of life and dignity of woman”, the Delhi trial court, which acquitted journalist Priya Ramani in a criminal defamation case filed by M J Akbar, has extended a legal shield to women speaking up against sexual harassment, even when it happened decades ago. “The woman has a right to put her grievance at any platform of her choice and even after decades,” Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey said in his 91-page verdict. Although the trial was premised on Akbar and his right to reputation, it became a platform for recording allegations of sexual harassment against him. While the court did not examine the merits of the sexual harassment allegations, since it was not the ...

Some tweaks, some revamps in IPL 2021 auction | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: For a while last year, there was buzz that two new teams would be included for the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians, the eternal Galactico hunters of the IPL, have a purse of Rs 15.35 crore while Delhi Capitals, still looking for their first title, have a mere Rs 13.50 crore in the kitty. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have Rs 19.90 cr in the bag and you can rest assured these big boys won't go into the traditional bidding wars they are used to. Show us that Sheikha Latifa is alive, UK tells Dubai – Times of India

LONDON: Britain called on the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday to show proof that Sheikha Latifa, one of the daughters of the ruler of Dubai, was still alive after she said in a video message from a bathroom that she was being held captive in a barricaded villa. The fate of Latifa, 35, and her tempestuous relationship with her father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, has cast a new spotlight on his family affairs and on an international campaign to free his daughter. Dubai is now under growing international pressure to allow Latifa, who tried to flee in 2018 in a dinghy but was brought back by commando units from India, to go free. British foreign minister Dominic Raab said the video of Latifa, in which she said she was being held hostage and was worried about her safety, was dee...

‘Government should give extension to statutory regional development boards’

To uplift backward regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada, the state government should give an extension to statutory regional development boards that have constitutional validity, said BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar Wednesday. He said any attempt to scrap statutory boards will be injustice to these backward regions and raised questions over the proposal not being taken up in the cabinet. Mungantiwar also met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. He submitted a letter urging him to direct the government to give a nod for the extension of the statutory regional development board. The letter was on behalf of all elected members from Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. The five-year tenure of the board came to an end on April 30, 2020. Source link

England’s Silverwood apologises for confusion over Moeen departure | Cricket News – Times of India

England coach Chris Silverwood apologised on Wednesday for the confusion surrounding Moeen Ali's departure from the India tour midway through the Test series after skipper Joe Root said the spinner had "chosen to go home". Moeen played in the second Test against India where he picked up eight wickets while he was also England's top scorer in the second innings with 43 runs as the tourists collapsed and lost by 317 runs for India to level the series at 1-1. Silverwood confirmed selectors had decided beforehand that Moeen, 33, would be granted leave to escape life in the bubble as part of England's rotation policy. "First of all, we're sorry. The impression we gave yesterday was Moeen's been treated differently to other people. He isn't, I can guarantee you that," Silverwood told reporter...

A division bench of Justice S S Shinde and Justice Manish Pitale was hearing Khadse’s plea against the ED case. In December 2020, the ED, which registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) last October, had sent a notice to Khadse over the land deal.
