6 dead in Pune-Mumbai road mishap

Six persons, including four from a family in Navi Mumbai, were killed and four others seriously injured when a container truck hit four vehicles on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway near Khopoli in Raigad district in the early hours of Tuesday, police said. According to Raigad district police, the accident took place when the Mumbai-bound container truck rammed into two cars and two more heavy vehicles around 1 am. The accident took place adjacent to the Expressway food mall near the Khopoli exit on a patch of the road with a downward gradient. A 28-year-old resident doctor at BYL Nair hospital allegedly died by suicide at the hospital’s campus on late Monday. Agripada Police have registered a case of accidental death in this connection. A special court on Monday rejected a plea by eight Pakistani nationals, arrested from a boat in 2015 allegedly with 232kg of heroin, seeking to be deported to Karachi. The arrested, facing trial in the case under charges of the Narcotic Drugs and Pyschotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, filed the plea, stating that the court in Mumbai has no territorial jurisdiction to conduct the trial as the boat in which they were apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard was on international waters. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has approved the transfer of land at Digha village, spanning 919 square metres (sqm), to the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) for development of the Airoli-Kalwa elevated corridor. The decision was taken following MRVC’s 2018 request for transfer and possession of the land. The allotment will be on leasehold basis for 90 years, CIDCO said in a release.
