TMC leaders should join Congress to stop BJP: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury | India News – Times of India

KOLKATA: Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday said Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders should join Congress to stop the growth of BJP in West Bengal. "Why will Congress go and support TMC to stop Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bengal? Still, there is time. My suggestion to TMC leaders is that they should leave the party and join the Congress. And if Mamata seeks forgiveness, we will think over it. Earlier, TMC was an ally of the United Progressive Alliance. Mamata had withdrawn the support later," Chowdhury told ANI. His comment came in the backdrop of TMC leader Tapas Roy's remark that the Left-Congress alliance does not have the strength to put up a fight against the BJP and it is only Mamata Banerjee who can take them on. Chowdhury said Banerjee "is not confident of winning the...

HER BROTHER playing in the snow in the hills of Uttarakhand will be an image that will stay forever with Ritu Rani, 38, elder sister of Vicky Kumar, 32, who had video-called her after a trek to the Bhavishya Badri temple in Tapovan, just a day before flash floods washed away the hydro power project’s establishment office at Rishi Ganga on February 7. Israeli researchers say Pfizer’s vaccine sharply reduces symptomatic Covid-19 in real world – Times of India

TEL AVIV: Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine appears to reduce symptomatic coronavirus infections by more than 90 per cent in the real world, according to Israeli researchers. According to CNN, the preliminary findings published on Monday suggest that the vaccine remains remarkably effective in a mass vaccination campaign - outside the carefully controlled conditions of a clinical trial. The Clalit Research Institute analysed data on 1.2 million people, about half of whom had received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Researchers compared patients who received the vaccine with similar individuals who hadn't. The rate of symptomatic Covid-19 - meaning people who were infected with the coronavirus and felt sick - decreased by 94 per cent among people who received two doses of the vaccine, acco...

India vs England Test 2: With first home ton, Ashwin turns another corner

INDIAN CRICKET has been slow to warm up to Ravichandran Ashwin’s quality and utility. He was the fastest Indian bowler to reach 100 and 200 Test wickets but was called a spin-track bully. He had scored four Test hundreds, before his fifth at Chepauk Monday, but due credit didn’t arrive. In fact, he was dropped from India’s one-day team after the 2017 Champions Trophy for being one-dimensional. On Monday, the 34-year-old from Chennai went past Garry Sobers and closed in on Ian Botham in the record books with a 148-ball 106 against England. It was Ashwin’s first three-figure score on home patch, but it also marked the third time in his career that he had taken a five-for and scored a century in the same match. Sobers and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis did it twice, ...

Oxford Covid 19 Vaccine: WHO lists AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use | World News – Times of India

GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday listed AstraZeneca and Oxford University's Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, widening access to the relatively inexpensive shot in the developing world. A WHO statement said it had approved the vaccine as produced by AstraZeneca-SKBio (Republic of Korea) and the Serum Institute of India. "We now have all the pieces in place for the rapid distribution of vaccines. But we still need to scale up production," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. The listing by the UN health agency comes days after a WHO panel provided interim recommendations on the vaccine, saying two doses with an interval of around 8 to 12 weeks must be given to all adults, and can be used in countries with the South African variant of the coronavir...

NATO will not leave Afghanistan before ‘time is right’ – Times of India

BRUSSELS: NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said Monday the alliance will not withdraw its troops from Afghanistan "before the time is right", ahead of a discussion by defence ministers on the deployment. The ministers of the 30 NATO member states will on Wednesday and Thursday hold their highest-level talks since US President Joe Biden took office vowing to work closer with allies after four years of tensions under Donald Trump. Top of the agenda for the virtual conference will be the fate of the alliance's 9,600-strong support mission in Afghanistan after Trump struck a deal with the Taliban to withdraw troops. The deployment's future hinges on whether Biden agrees to stick to a May deadline to pull out foreign forces or risks a bloody backlash from the Islamist insurgents by st...

India vs England: Batsman Ashwin’s experience pays off as he ‘ambushes’ England | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: It was a coincidence that former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who as a state selector had once dropped R Ashwin from a Tamil Nadu junior team for poor batting performance, interviewed the off-spinner who scored his fifth Test century to put India in command on the third day of the second Test against England on Monday. Ashwin scored his fifth Test century to help India set England a target of 482 runs to win at his home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. While answering a query from Sivaramakrishnan, Ashwin recalled how as a 19-year-old he was dropped from the Tamil Nadu side for failing to play the sweep, a shot he played with great effect on Monday. Over the last couple of months, Ashwin has rediscovered himself as a batsman to return to the league...

Mukul Roy writes to Shah about protesting para teachers’ demands BJP national vice president Mukul Roy on Monday wrote to Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah saying that para teachers, or contract teachers, in West Bengal had been deprived of their rights. Roy sought Shah’s advice on the pay scale and perks that the BJP can assure such teachers if it comes to power. “The state BJP should take up the matter seriously for the welfare of the para-teachers. I am willing to visit their agitation and assure them of our solidarity towards them. However, I would urge you to inform me about the pay-scale and perks that I, on behalf of the party, can assure them once we form the government in West Bengal,” Roy wrote in the letter. The BJP leader drew the Union minister’s atten...

KXIP opt for name change, to be called Punjab Kings from IPL-14 | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Kings XI Punjab will be called Punjab Kings from the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, the franchise having opted for a change in name after giving it a long thought. KXIP is one of the eight franchise teams to have competed in the last edition of the T20 league in the UAE. "The team was planning to change the name for a long time and thought it should be done before this IPL. So it is not a sudden decision," a BCCI source told PTI on Monday. The franchise, jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul, have failed to win an IPL title since the event's inaugural edition in 2008. In the tournament's 13-year history, they were runners-up once and achieved a third-place finish on another occasion. The next IPL is set to start in the second w...

West Bengal Governor prorogues Assembly

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar prorogued the West Bengal Assembly from Monday, and observed that in the country’s parliamentary history, an assembly has never been in session for over a year without being prorogued. Prorogation is discontinuing a session of the Parliament or a legislative assembly without dissolving it. In a Twitter post, Dhankhar said he prorogued the Assembly from February 15, taking note of a recommendation by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “Never earlier in the parliamentary history of this country an assembly has been in session for over a year without being prorogued,” Dhankhar tweeted. A two-day special session of the Assembly was held from January 27. Source link
