South MCD releases list of 780 for teaching posts

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has started the recruitment process for the post of teachers in its schools by releasing an allotment list of 780 candidates. The Indian Express had earlier reported that hundreds of candidates selected to teach at MCD schools are being forced to run from pillar to post as they have not been given joining letters despite being selected six months ago. The SDMC has now released the list of candidates with details of which MCD — South, East and North — they have to join. “We have got the allotment letter which would be followed by document verification; then the school has to be defined. It has been three years since we gave the exams… we are hopeful we can start work when the new session starts,” said a candidate. Education commit...

‘We’re not settling for second,’ say defiant Manchester United | Football News – Times of India

BIRMINGHAM: Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and captain Harry Maguire vowed on Sunday that the title race was not over despite another disappointing result that left them seven points behind neighbours and Premier League leaders Manchester City. United, who had topped the table earlier in the season, could only draw 1-1 away at second-bottom West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, leaving them second on 46 points after playing one more game than City and with 14 matches left. "No, I don't think so," Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters when asked if the title race was over. "I think no one will give it away this early. Of course, no one knows this season, it's so unpredictable. Life is so unpredictable. Anything can happen. Of course we're not going to se...

North MCD school teachers seek funds to buy smartphones for online teaching

Several teachers in North MCD schools are writing to corporation officials asking that they be sanctioned allowances to purchase smartphones and data packs to carry out online teaching and administrative activities, pointing out that they are awaiting their salaries for the last four months. Teachers have been protesting against the North MCD for the last year over repeated delays in release of salaries. A recent order requiring them to download and use an app to mark their attendance has now led to a demand to put further pressure on the body. A letter with a common template is being sent out many teachers to their respective assistant and deputy directors. It reads: “I request you to kindly provide sanction for purchase of smartphone, SIM card, Internet pack, AMC and insu...

At heart of Ghazipur protest site, a pathshala for children of ragpickers

What started as an informal class for 12 children of farmers on January 22 at the Ghazipur protest site has now turned into a ‘pathshala’ attended by children of ragpickers from nearby areas. The classes were started by members of the Mata Savitribai Phule Mahasabha, with an aim to teach farmers’ children since they were missing out on school. Simultaneously, organisers started teaching local children who frequented the site to collect waste. After January 26, a number of women protesters left the site along with their children. Now, the ‘pathshala’ has over 90 local students, who attend in two batches. Radha (10), one of the students, said, “I left my previous school because they used to ask for fees that my father could not afford. I don’t have a mother and my father work...

No one said a word when India had no chance: Warne shuts up Vaughan | Cricket News – Times of India

CHENNAI: "No one said a word about the pitch when India had no chance." With these words spin legend Shane Warne on Sunday silenced former England captain Michael Vaughan who had slammed the surface used for the second Test at Chepauk. Seeking to level the four-match Test series after their defeat in the opener, the Indian spinners, especially Ravichandran Ashwin, had the English batsmen on the ropes on the second day of the second match on a pitch that is offering the tweakers vicious turn and bounce. It all started with a tweet by Vaughan after the England innings began to crumble in reply to India's first-innings total of 329 all out. "It's entertaining cricket as things are happening all the time but let's be honest this Pitch is a shocker .. Not making any excuses as India have bee...

The Opposition party blamed the TMC for the attack, but the ruling party refuted the allegation. Firoze Kamal Gazi alias Babu Master was returning to Kolkata from an organisational meeting in Basirhat when, around 9 pm, some people on bikes blocked the car near the Laugachhi police outpost in Minakhar. They hurled crude bombs and fired at the vehicle. Babu Master, who was sitting to the drier’s left, received splinter injuries, according to sources. Delhi: Protesters at Narela road thin out, farmers say more to arrive on Feb 22

Narela Road near the Singhu border, which had tractors parked end to end earlier, has emptied out over the past few days. Police posted at the site said the number of protesters on the road has come down to 30-40% of what it was earlier. However, farmers said this is temporary and more protesters are set to reach the border on February 22. Locals working in the area said the numbers have reduced gradually since January 26. Said Naveen (22), an auto driver, “There are still many protesters on the main road, but the crowd has reduced in the last 10-15 days. Earlier, there was no space to drive our autos on this road. That is not the case anymore.” However, spirits of farmers who have stayed put at the spot still ran high. Jaspaal Singh (30) from Punjab’s Moga district, who ha...

3rd T20I: Pakistan beat South Africa by 4 wickets, win series 2-1 | Cricket News – Times of India

LAHORE (Pakistan): Tail-ender Hasan Ali hit two sixes in the penultimate over to help Pakistan clinch the Twenty20 international series against South Africa with a four-wicket win in the third and final match in Lahore on Sunday. Hasan finished with a seven-ball 20 not out as Pakistan overhauled a 165-run target in 18.4 overs to win the series 2-1, South Africa's first T20I series defeat in Asia. South Africa had previously won five and drawn one T20I series in Asia. South Africa's late blip meant David Miller's robust 85 not out and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi's four wickets, which seemed to have put the tourists on the road to victory, were in vain. Miller smashed seven sixes and five fours off just 45 balls to lift South Africa from a tottering 48-6. He helped add 116 for the last four wi...

Death of Delhi resident Rinku Sharma found an echo in Madhya Pradesh Sunday, with the state assembly’s protem speaker Rameshwar Sharma saying the murder was because he was working for the “cause of dharma and Hindutva”. This comes two days after the protem speaker, Rameshwar Sharma, shared a cartoon on Facebook of a man being stabbed in the back by a man wearing a skull cap, with the hashtag ‘Justice for Rinku Sharma’. He claimed he received threats following the post. When contacted, Rameshwar Sharma told The Indian Express, “Rinku Sharma was targeted and killed and if there was some issue about a business deal going sour, did the police get any complaint about it before? Greta Thunberg farm protest toolkit: Delhi Police arrests 22-yr-old, calls her key to foreign hand

The Delhi Police’s first arrest in the high-profile case of sedition and criminal conspiracy registered 10 days ago over a toolkit tweeted by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on the farmers’ protest is a 22-year-old woman from Bengaluru — a move that has been slammed by Opposition leaders as “shocking” and “atrocious”. Police said they took Disha Ravi, who is an environmental activist, into custody in Bengaluru Saturday afternoon and “formally arrested” her in Delhi Sunday. They produced her in a Delhi court, which remanded her in police custody for five days — two less than what the prosecution had wanted. During the hearing at the Patiala House Court before Metropolitan Magistrate Dev Saroha, Ravi broke down and told the court that she was not part of any conspirac...
