Amid standoff, PM bids Azad a tearful farewell: Door always open for you

AMID THE Government-Opposition standoff in Parliament over the farm laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday bid a tearful farewell to Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad whose term ends next week. Modi broke down several times during his 13-minute speech, as he recalled his close association with Azad. “At a personal level, I would request him to not consider that he is not in the House. My door is always open for all of you… I will always expect, and value, your views,” Modi said. “I will not let you retire,” he told the Congress veteran. Azad also turned emotional during his response. He said the BJP has always been part of “nationalist politics”, and he felt “proud” that he was a “Hindustani Muslim”. While he did not mention the abrogation of A...

Delhi: Woman arrested for ‘killing’ four minor daughters

Over two months after four sisters were found dead in their home in Haryana’s Nuh district, their mother has been arrested for their murder, with police officials saying she has confessed that she committed the crime because she was “disturbed” over not having a son. The girls were aged six, four, three and one. Police said the woman, Farmeena, then tried to commit suicide by slitting her own throat but survived and was hospitalised. She was arrested on Monday after being discharged. The murders came to light on November 26, when the girls’ father, Khurshid, who lives in Nuh’s Punhana area, returned home around 7 pm after attending a funeral in the village. In his complaint to police, he said the door was locked from the inside, and he called out to his wife before banging ...

He had joined the tractor rally organised in protest against the farm laws on Republic Day. On Tuesday, Delhi Police told the court that three teams have been constituted to locate Bajinder and they have interrogated 15 people in this regard. The matter will be next heard on February 17. Written by Lalmani Verma | Tapovan (dharamshala) | February 10, 2021 4:40:38 am With more than two days since the flash flood struck Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, hopes of finding any more survivors at the Tapovan and Rishi Ganga power project sites dimmed as rescue agencies recovered six more bodies on Tuesday. So far, 32 bodies have been recovered in the region, with over 170 people still missing. DIG Garhwal Neeru Garg said that of the six bodies recovered on Tuesday, four were from the Rishi Ganga power project site at Raini village, one was from Chamoli and another from Nandprayag. Delhi: New Gambhir canteen to serve lunch at Re 1

BJP MP Gautam Gambhir Tuesday started his second ‘Jan Rasoi’ canteen at New Ashok Nagar in his East Delhi constituency, to serve lunch at a price of Re 1. He had earlier started a canteen in Gandhinagar on December 24, where up to 1,000 people are served every day. The lunch comprises rice, lentils and vegetable curries. “This is not just a kitchen, but a movement to feed those in need and end hunger… I only have my resources, which I want to use to help the most vulnerable,” he said, adding that food is a basic necessity which still eludes many. He said he plans to open at least one ‘Jan Rasoi’ canteen in each of the 10 assembly constituencies of East Delhi. The project is being funded by his foundation and personal resources, said an aide. We are proud to announce that J...

Uttarakhand flash flood: Raini counts its dead, no road link for 13 villages to China border

AS DEBRIS and slush were cleared from the Rishi Ganga power plant site near Raini village, which bore the brunt of the flash flood in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, four bodies and the remains of a fifth were recovered Tuesday. It was a grim reminder of the deluge that destroyed the plant two days ago. The area where a water tank and a residential block stood was completely flattened, and a suspension bridge washed away, leaving 13 villages till the China border inaccessible by road. And, fears that another flash flood could hit the area continued to keep residents on tenterhooks. Through Monday night, national and state disaster relief forces and Border Road Organisation (BRO) personnel worked to clear a 100-metre path from the gate of Raini, the home of the Chipko mo...

No gender, religion bias in orders by district courts, finds study

Does the religion or gender of a judge in a lower court play a role in their orders? A study by the Development Data Lab, a US-based research organisation, has found scant evidence of any systemic gender or religious bias in district and subordinate courts across the country. “In both of these specifications, we find a robust null estimate of in-group bias among Indian judges. Judges of different genders do not treat defendants differently according to their gender, nor do judges display favouritism on the basis of religion,” the study said. The Development Data Lab, founded by Dartmouth College Professor Paul Novosad and Johns Hopkins SAIS Professor Sam Asher, works with governments, firms, and civil society organisations to generate policy-relevant knowledge using dat...

Farmers’ protests dominate Lok Sabha debate, Oppn asks Govt to repeal farm laws | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The farmers’ protest against the contentious farm laws dominated the debate on the presidential motion in Lok Sabha on Tuesday as speakers across party lines, with most in the opposition benches accusing the government of being insensitive towards the “annadatas” (food providers), when the people in the country and the world over are concerned and yet the Presidential address fails to mention it. The treasury benches called it an international conspiracy and accused opposition parties of halting reforms that are meant to bring relief to the small farmers. Opposition members asked the government in Lok Sabha to shed its “arrogance” over the three farm laws even as BJP MPs hailed the Centre for its welfare and pro-farmer measures. The Prime Minister’s “andolanjivi” (professiona...

Road accident situation in country ‘much serious’ than pandemic, says Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the road accident scenario in the country was ‘much serious than the Covid-19 pandemic’ and ‘an alarming situation’. One of the steps taken to decrease this was to bring 40,000 km of highways under safety audit so as to find and correct design and other deficiencies, he said. “Seventy per cent deaths are in the working age group of 18 to 45 years old. There are 415 deaths per day in road accidents in India. I would say this scenario is very much serious than Covid-19 pandemic and it is becoming an alarming situation for us year on year,” Gadkari said while addressing a webinar by the International Road Federation. “Unfortunately we stand at position 1 in road accidents in the world, ahead of US and China. Being the transport...
