Vaccination beneficiaries below target due to vaccine hesitancy, others: Govt | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Fewer than planned beneficiaries attended the coronavirus vaccination sessions at the start due to transient technical issues in CoWIN portal and vaccine hesitancy, among others, the government informed the Parliament on Friday. A total of 7,580 adverse events following immunisation have been reported till January 31 under the rollout. None of the 12 deaths of vaccinated persons have been causally attributed to the vaccination as per the current evidence, minister of state for health Ashwini Choubey told the Lok Sabha. Responding to a question on the urgency on part of the government to go ahead with the vaccination when the cases are declining, Choubey said a second or third peak was experienced in other countries during the later part of the pandemic. Day after Andhra poll notice: Naveen Patnaik inaugurates projects in disputed Kotia panchayat area

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday inaugurated a slew of welfare projects in the disputed panchayat area of Kotia in Koraput district’s Pottangi block. The dispute over the ownership of 21 out of 28 villages in Kotia panchayat between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh dates back to five decades. The dispute had reached the Supreme Court in 1968. In 2006, however, the apex court held that interstate boundaries did not fall under its jurisdiction and only Parliament could resolve it. Notably, the residents of the panchayat receive benefits from both the states and also hold identity cards from both states. Last year, the Odisha government had announced a development package of Rs 150 crore for the 21 disputed villages falling under the panchayat. On Friday, Patnaik inaugu...

Told farmers we can amend laws… issue in only 1 state: Narendra Tomar

Signalling that the government is ready to amend the three agriculture laws at the centre of protests by farmer unions, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told Parliament Friday that he had made such a suggestion to the delegation of farmers while making clear that this should not mean that there was a “mistake in the laws”. Defending the laws, Tomar, while participating in a Rajya Sabha discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, said the protest against the laws was an issue in “only one state” where people had become “victims of misunderstanding”, and this had become a “burning issue”. Most farmer unions, camping at the gates of Delhi to protest against the laws, are from Punjab, and their leaders, until the negotiations broke down last mo...

10.5% growth in 2021-22, will raise CRR in two stages, says RBI

In line with strengthening signs of economic recovery, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has forecast that real GDP, hit by the Covid pandemic in 2020-21, is expected to grow by 10.5 per cent in 2021-22. Signalling the unwinding of the surplus liquidity in the system, the RBI has decided to restore the cash reserve ratio — the portion of bank deposits that is kept with RBI — in a non-disruptive manner from 3 per cent to 4 per cent in two stages by May 22 this year. In another “structural reform” intended to improve retail participation in the government securities market and to keep the cost of funds down for the central government, the RBI has proposed to allow small investors direct access to its platform. The central government plans to borrow Rs 12 lakh crore in 2021-22. ...

Burza said the move will instill a sense of confidence and security among tourists, which will pave the industry’s way to recovery. Pfizer withdraws vaccine application, even as government panel had withheld nod | India News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Even as Pfizer announced it is withdrawing its application for emergency use approval of its Covid-19 vaccine on Friday, it has come to light that the government expert panel in India had decided against recommending it in the absence of local clinical trials’ data. The subject expert committee (SEC) under the Union health ministry in its meeting on February 3 had observed that serious adverse events including palsy and anaphylaxis have been reported during post-marketing of the vaccine globally. Since the causality of the events with the vaccine was being investigated, the committee did not recommend the messenger or mRNA vaccine for emergency use in the country at this stage. Further, the firm has not proposed any plan to generate safety and immunogenicity data in the Indian p...

Expenditure secy: Chose capex over handouts, will trigger growth

Working with a “constrained resource envelope” in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic ahead of Budget 2021-22, the government essentially had to make a choice between two policy options: handouts and capital expenditure. “We chose capex,” TV Somanathan, Expenditure Secretary, Ministry of Finance, told The Indian Express in a post-Budget interview, responding to a question on the policy choices. The 34.46 per cent hike in capital expenditure in 2021-22 over the Budget Estimate of 2020-21, to be utilised mostly on infrastructure sectors including rail and roads, will have a huge multiplier effect, boost investment, generate jobs and improve incomes, he said. “Relaxation of the fiscal limit helped in expansion to some extent, but this is not limitless. There are choices to...

The mahapanchayat decided that farmers from the region should move towards the Ghazipur and Singhu borders to join the farm protests outside Delhi. “I got the notice on January 30 and came to know that such notices were issued to around 200 farmers in the district. Faruqui says safeguards flouted during his arrest, SC grants him interim bail

More than a month after he was jailed in Indore on charges of hurting religious sentiments, and days after the Madhya Pradesh High Court pointed to “evidence/material collected so far” and rejected his bail plea, the Supreme Court Friday ordered the release on ad-interim bail of stand-up comic Munawar Faruqui. Hearing an appeal filed by Faruqui challenging the High Court order and a writ petition seeking quashing of the FIR against him, a bench of Justices R F Nariman and B R Gavai stated: “The learned counsel has pointed out to us that quite apart from the fact that the allegations made in the FIR are vague that the procedure contained in Section 41 Cr.P.C… has not been followed before arresting the petitioner. Victory for Sushil Kumar, ministry declares SGFI’s elections null and void | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The sports ministry on Friday declared the School Games Federation of India's (SGFI) elections null and void, held in Nagapattinam town of Tamil Nadu on December 29, 2020 without the approval of SGFI's president, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar. The Ministry has directed the federation to conduct re-election as per the provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India (NSDCI) 2011. SGFI's secretary general, Rajesh Mishra, had arbitrarily conducted the elections by appointing a returning officer (RO) of his choice without obtaining the consent of Sushil. As per the model election guidelines prescribed in the NSDCI, the power to appoint a RO vests with the president of the concerned federation, which is Sushil in this case. It's the same Mishra, who had previo...
