UK China News: UK strips China’s state media channel of broadcast licence | World News – Times of India

LONDON: The UK has stripped China's state-owned TV channel of its broadcasting licence in the country, after an investigation found the licence holder lacked editorial control and had links to China's ruling Communist Party. The communications regulator, Ofcom, said Thursday it revoked the UK licence for China Global Television Network, or CGTN, an international English language satellite news channel. CGTN had been available on free and pay TV in the UK. It could not be reached immediately for comment. Regulators started looking into the channel after several people had filed complaints, saying it aired their forced confessions and violated rules on fairness and accuracy. One was from a former British Consulate employee in Hong Kong who says he was detained and tortured by Chinese poli...

NDA ally in Kerala splits, rebel leaders claim BJP secret pact with LDF for polls

The Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), a constituent of the NDA in Kerala, on Thursday split, with a section of leaders breaking away and announcing a new party that will work with the Congress-led UDF in the upcoming assembly elections. The rebel leaders also alleged that the BJP has made a secret understanding with the ruling LDF for the elections. Announcing the decision to float the Bharathiya Jana Sena (BJS), rebel leaders V Gopakumar and N K Neelakandan said the LDF government had deeply hurt sentiments of Hindus by allowing entry of women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala Temple – a move that followed a Supreme Court verdict in 2018. “Thousands of faithful, including BDJS workers, faced police action when they protested against the women’s entry into the temple. ...

Mitra, who has been advised by the doctors to not step out of his house due to Covid-19 pandemic, wrote a letter to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar citing his inability to present the vote on account. Assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay had also sought the Governor’s nod for the same. Farm exports defy overall trend in 2020, see 9.8 per cent growth

While India’s overall merchandise exports have fallen 15.5% year-on-year during April-December, the same period has seen its farm exports register a 9.8% growth. This is thanks to agricultural production being relatively unaffected by the Covid-19-induced lockdown, and to a steep surge in global commodity prices. Commerce Ministry data show the country’s exports of all goods during April-December 2020 stood at $201.30 billion, down from $238.27 billion in April-December 2019. In contrast, exports of agri-commodities rose from $26.34 billion to $28.91 billion for this period. With imports simultaneously contracting 5.5%, the agricultural trade surplus widened from $9.57 billion in April-December 2019 to $13.07 billion in April-December 2020 (see table on page 2). The increas...

US backs reform, flags Internet cut; India draws Red Fort-Capitol parallel

A day after the Ministry of External Affairs slammed “celebrities and others” — in the wake of comments by pop icon Rihanna and teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg in support of farmer protests — the Biden administration, making its first diplomatic intervention with New Delhi after assuming office, waded into the issue of protests and Internet restrictions in and around the protest sites. Stating that it “encouraged” differences between the parties to be resolved “through dialogue”, the US administration “welcomed steps that would improve the efficiency of India’s markets and attract greater private sector investment” — a reference to the three farm laws at the centre of the protest. The remarks were seen by New Delhi as an endorsement of the laws. On Internet restrict...

Punjab reaches out to Centre and farmers, proposes longer pause

Wary of the protracted farmers’ agitation in the capital and the Republic Day incident at Red Fort, the Punjab government has stepped up efforts to reach out to the Centre to work towards an early resolution, sources told The Indian Express. Some top state officials have been camping in Delhi and are in constant touch with both the protesting farmers and the Centre. There were concerns in the state government that after the Nishan Sahib was hoisted at Red Fort, the agitation would fizzle out and farmers would return empty-handed. “Everybody here knows that if farmers come back without getting anything after these weeks and months of protests, anger will mount in the state. That would be a perfect breeding ground for resentment and we cannot afford that,” said a top state go...

BCCI anti-graft unit wants crackdown on mini-IPLs

Teams being put up by their owners, year after year, despite lack of a viable business model. An owner with no clear source of income owning teams in different leagues. Chargeheets filed against owners, players and coaches for spot-fixing. Investigators in the Indian cricket board’s Anti-Corruption Unit have had enough. They have told the BCCI that it’s time to crack down on these largely unregulated mini-IPLs — or franchise-based T20 leagues being run in seven states now by the board’s associations, including heavyweights Mumbai, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Indian Express has learnt that ACU chief Ajit Singh has spoken to BCCI officials to find a solution to curb corruption in these leagues. One solution being considered by the board strikes at the roots of these leagues...

Prof D N Jha: Iconoclast scholar who made ancient history contemporary

A historian whose work on India’s ancient past often found its way into its polarised present, Prof D N Jha was never afraid to speak his mind. A former professor and chair at the Department of History at Delhi University specialising in ancient and medieval history, Jha consistently called out what he saw as distortions of Indian history. Whether it was challenging the notion of the Gupta age as being the “golden age” of Indian history, or showing that the sacred status of the cow was a much later development than is frequently claimed, or documenting religious violence in ancient India, Jha’s works and words played out in the battlefield of politics in modern India. Jha passed away on Thursday. He was 81. “He was a stickler for historical facts, for empirical evidence. He...

BJP declares 575 names, following new selection criteria for candidates

The Gujarat BJP on Thursday announced its candidates for 575 out of 576 seats of six municipal corporations which are going to polls on February 21, largely complying with the criteria party chief CR Paatil set for age, terms and keeping family members of functionaries out of the lists. The lone seat where candidate was not declared was of ward 11 in Adajan area of Surat. Unruly scenes were witnessed in Surat, home to Paatil, where workers came out on the streets to protest the nomination of Dharmesh Sarasiya in Ward 3, as also in Varachha and Kapodara which witnessed protests areas against the nominations. Angry scenes were witnessed even at BJP offices in Vadodara and Rajkot, mostly against ‘seniors being ignored’ in the nominations. Ahmedabad saw a few exceptions to the ...
