Initiating the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, BJP member Bhubaneswar Kalita said, “The benefits of these three important farm laws have started reaching more than 10 crore people and small farmers. There has been no reduction in the rights and facilities of farmers. Through these agriculture reforms, the government has given new rights to farmers.” Saying the government has “utmost respect for farmers” and that Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar ...

Rihanna and Greta prompt an MEA outburst — and a hashtag firestorm

In a highly unusual move that has raised eyebrows, the government Wednesday slammed “celebrities and others” for their comments in support of farmer protests, calling them “neither accurate nor responsible”. This came after pop icon Rihanna, teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg and lawyer-author Meena Harris, niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, spoke out on the farmer protests. The Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, said: “Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible.” Incidentally,...

Once upon a time in 1996: Congress, BJP, for & against on insurance

When Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an increase in FDI limit from 49% to 74% in the insurance sector and foreign ownership and control with safeguards, history is a cautionary and instructive reminder. For, both the BJP and the Congress have opposed — and also backed — raising the limit at different times depending on whether they were in the government or the opposition. So when the Insurance Act, 2015, comes to Parliament for amendment again, the debate will be keenly heard, its echo going back to 1996. That December, P Chidambaram, then with the Tamil Maanila Congress and who was Finance Minister in the I K Gujral United Front government, tabled the Insurance Regulatory Authority Bill seeking to establish a regulatory authority for the insurance sector. Th...

Farm laws issue rocks Lok Sabha for second day; Oppn demands separate discussion | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha proceedings were washed out for the second consecutive day on Wednesday after the House was repeatedly adjourned due to protests by opposition members who were demanding a separate discussion on the farm laws issue. The House reassembled four times but was unable to conduct business as the members of the Congress, DMK, AAP and the SAD trooped into the Well and shouted slogans against the farm laws, ignoring repeated appeals by Speaker Om Birla to maintain order. As the proceedings started at 4 PM, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury tried to raise the issue of farmers' agitation against the agri laws, saying the matter is harming the image of the country. "We are concerned," he said. Several opposition members entered the Well, protesting against the...

CID implicating Waheed Para in fraudulent, politically motivated case: Mehbooba Mufti

Former J&K chief minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday accused the CID of keeping the party’s youth wing president, Waheed Para, in “inhuman conditions” and accused the department of implicating him in a “fraudulent and politically motivated” case. Para has been in the custody of Counter Intelligence (Kashmir) at Srinagar since January 9, the same day that he was granted bail in a separate case filed by the NIA. Mehbooba claimed on Twitter that the CID had replaced the head of the SIT probing the case “because he refused to be an accomplice in framing invented charges”. “Waheed is being persecuted & tortured to admit the false allegations. Since an admission didn’t happen he is being kept under inhuman conditions. This investigation has been fraudulent...
