Kargil ignored in first Ladakh tableau: chief of Hill Council

Old faultlines between Buddhist Ladakh and Muslim Kargil have emerged in the Republic Day tableau of the new Union Territory of Ladakh. The first tableau of Ladakh will depict the Thiksey Monastery in Leh and the Indian Astronomical Observatory in Hanle, and Kargil feels ignored. Feroz Ahmad Khan, Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, has written to Lt Governor R K Mathur protesting that “cultural and religious symbols” of Kargil have been ignored. “It is unfortunate to note that a singular aspect of Ladakh has been incorporated for display on the UT Ladakh tableau during Republic Day, thereby failing to showcase the rich and diverse religio-cultural fabric of Ladakh,” Khan has written. “It is felt that (the) partial visual representatio...

At IIM Calcutta, it’s teachers versus Director over her powers, their role

The faculty at Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, is locked in an unprecedented standoff with the institute’s director alleging that she has centralised powers in her hands and usurped their role in administration and decision-making. Director Anju Seth has attributed the confrontation to “a small group of individuals” upset with her efforts to foster a culture of transparency and accountability. That group isn’t small. Last month, as many as 61 teachers — over 75% of the IIM-Calcutta’s faculty — wrote to the Ministry of Education (MoE) urging it to step in alleging that Seth’s style of functioning, was “arbitrary, discriminatory, and, having a very narrow vision.” The letter, the faculty claims, was sent to the government only after exhausting all redressal avenues ...

80K vaccinated in Bengal in six days

The West Bengal health department on Sunday said 84,505 health workers had been vaccinated in the state in the last six days of the inoculation drive, which began on January 16. Sources said in the next phase the government was prepared to vaccinate around 11 lakh frontline workers, including police personnel and civic body officials. The list will also include people working in the offices of district magistrates. Sources in the health department said that while the target was to vaccinate 1,18,372 people in the first round, only 71 per cent could be given their first shots. Those who had adverse reactions to vaccines — also called Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI) cases — are responding well to treatment well and are stable, according to officials. Pakistan Zindabad: 11-hour police ordeal for family, friends over a game

TWO men were detained and questioned for eight hours through Saturday-Sunday night and three women for at least three hours Sunday morning by the Delhi Police — all because they were heard saying “Pakistan Zindabad” as part of a cycling game near Khan Market Metro station late Saturday night. Their ordeal, that started at 1 am on Sunday, ended only by noon with the police admitting that “Pakistan Zindabad” was said in a “lighter vein”, and no case was made out. Ahead of Republic Day, police said, they were on “high alert” when they received a call around 1 am about a “group shouting slogans, praising Pakistan”. An enquiry officer was sent to the spot. “Two families (one from Delhi, the other from Gurugram) along with their child had come to India Gate Saturday night. They h...

TMC worker shot dead in Barrackpore

A 35-year-old Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker has been shot dead in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district, officials said on Sunday. Sources said Rumani Khan, a resident of Gwalapur in Barrackpore’s Number 18 ward, was shot dead in his house on Saturday evening. Investigators believe the attackers, who wore masks, were keeping an eye on the house and after Rumani’s daughter Karishma stepped out, they barged in and shot him. Rumani, who was a close aide of a former Trinamool Congress councillor, was fired at twice. He was taken to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Following the murder, local TMC leaders reached Khan’s house and urged the police for a thorough investigation. Sexual assault under POCSO needs skin to skin contact: Bombay HC

IN a controversial order that could have implications on a range of cases, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court acquitted a man of sexual assault on the grounds that pressing the breasts of a child over her clothes without direct “skin to skin” physical contact does not constitute “sexual assault” under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The verdict, delivered by Justice Pushpa V Ganediwala on January 19, set aside the ruling of a lower court under Section 8 of POCSO applicable to “sexual assault” on children, against convict Satish Bandu Ragde. Saying that Section 8 of POCSO provides for stringent punishment of five years’ of rigorous imprisonment (RI), the High Court observed that “stricter proof and serious allegations are required”. The judge ...

TMC protests ‘insult’ to Mamata, BJP accuses her of ‘appeasing’ minorities

The war of words between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP continued on Sunday over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to speak at an event organised at the Victoria Memorial on Saturday to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Banerjee refused to address the event after “Jai Shri Ram” slogans were raised in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Sunday, TMC workers held protests against the perceived slight to Banerjee even as the Left and the Congress came out in Banerjee’s support. TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, the chief minister’s nephew, said it was a deliberate attempt by the BJP to not allow Mamata Banerjee to speak at the event. “Yesterday, the chief minister elected by 2.5 crore people in the state was humiliated. Boxing needs standard selection practices: Ashish Shelar | Boxing News – Times of India

CHANDIGARH: It all started in 2019 when six-time world champion boxer Mary Kom was selected to join the Indian contingent for the Tokyo Olympics without any trials. The selection process however, didn’t go down too well as young Nikhat Zareen of Telangana, urged the Boxing Federation of India for a fair chance of selection. This fuelled a new rivalry of sorts for the 51kg category. However, Nikhat’s request for a trial bout for the Olympic qualifiers in Jordan was heeded, and Mary Kom reigned supreme after handing the 24-year-old a 9-1 defeat. Done and dusted but the ugly face-off could have been handed in a better way, feels Ashish Shelar, the contender to the BFI president’s post in the upcoming February 3 polls. In an interview with TOI, Shelar spells out his priorities if he wins th...

After strides in social welfare, Latur village hands over baton to all-woman panchayat

NINE years after 50 per cent seats were reserved for women in Maharashtra’s gram panchayats, Anandwadi village in Latur’s Nilanga taluka has picked an all-woman panchayat. The six were elected unopposed in the panchayat polls held recently, their way paved by the performance of two-time sarpanch Bhagyashree Chame, who was one of the three women elected in 2015, along with Shobha Kasle and Kalpana Sagar. Given the number of ‘Anandwadis’ in Nilanga, the village, located 25 km from Latur city, is more commonly known as Gaur. Home to 635 people, mostly farmers, Gaur has in the past five years seen improved cleanliness, a campaign against superstitions, change in name plates of all 112 homes to that of their women occupants, a sanitary napkin dispenser, inclusion of widows in fe...
