Thane shows the way, slum marks a room for menstrual hygiene

In the grimy, narrow alleys of Thane’s Lokmanya Nagar, a one-storey toilet block stands out for its freshly painted outer wall in shades of green and yellow, and a message: “Menstrual cycle is a natural process. Tyabaddal lajjaspad ase kahihi nahi (There is nothing shameful about it).” One of the 10 toilets in the women’s section is now a ‘period room’, the first of its kind in a public toilet in a slum, which was opened to users on Monday. The ‘period room’ has a urinal, a jet-spray, a toilet-roll holder, soap, running water and what public toilets needed most — a dustbin. Thane Municipal Corporation is planning to have such a room now across its public toilets. “This is a low-cost innovation that took only Rs 45,000. We will replicate this in all our toilets, which would ...

India’s GDP to contract 7.7% in current fiscal, advance estimates show

Pulled down by a sharp contraction in the services, manufacturing and mining sectors, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) will contract 7.7 per cent in the current financial year as against a growth of 4.2 per cent in the previous fiscal, the first advance estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Thursday show. The slide in growth in a tumultuous year that saw the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic impact of a months-long nationwide lockdown, is deeper than the 7.5 per cent contraction estimated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its December 4 monetary policy review. The projected contraction reflects a loss of Rs 11.3 lakh crore of GDP in real absolute terms from last year. Out of a total eight sectors, agriculture and electricity generation are ...

Suvendu, now with BJP, pays tribute to ‘TMC martyrs’, takes a dig at Chhatradhar

For the first time, a BJP leader on Thursday paid tribute to those who were killed in the Nandigram and Lalgarh agitations during the Left Front government. Nandigram and Lalgarh agitations, spearheaded by the villagers and backed by the Trinamool Congress against the land acquisition in the later years of the last decade, had prefaced the fall of the Left Front government in 2011. It is an important day in the Trinamool Congress calendar, and is observed as “Shahid Diwas” — Martyrs’ Day. Suvendu Adhikari, who recently quit the Trinamool Congress to join the BJP, reached Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district on Wednesday night and was first to pay tribute, even before the Trinamool leaders. “Some people had threatened that I would not be allowed to come here (Nandigram). Zero hearings in 4 years but Rs 40 crore spent: TMC govt’s grievance redressal panel comes a cropper

A commission set up by the Mamata Banerjee government to address grievances related to public services did not conduct a single hearing between 2015, when it was set up, and 2019, a Right to Information (RTI) activist has found. Two years after coming to power, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration enacted the West Bengal Right to Public Services Act, 2013 (WBRTPS Act), and in 2015 it set up the West Bengal Right to Public Service Commission to ensure proper implementation of the law. In response to queries from socio-legal researcher and activist Biswanath Goswami under the Right to Information (RTI) Act — first raised on December 8, 2017 — the Department of Consumer Affairs admitted that between 2015 and 2019 the commission did not conduct a single hearing on matter...
