Delhi temple demolition: VHP, Bajrang Dal protest, cops step in

Police Tuesday detained members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, who were protesting at Chandni Chowk over the demolition of a Hanuman temple. The temple was demolished on Sunday by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, in accordance with court orders, as part of the ongoing Chandni Chowk redevelopment project. Police said the men were taken to Kotwali police station around 12.30 pm and later released. DCP (North) Anto Alphonse said: “At least 30 people were detained and then released.” A police officer said the group had not sought permission to hold the protest. No FIR has been filed. Carrying saffron flags and raising slogans, the protesters marched from the Gauri Shankar Mandir to the spot where the temple stood. They were stopped by police at a barricade....

Corn to onions — Burari ground, once feared as a ‘jail’, now a field for farmers

With small patches of onion, corn and a number of other vegetables, rows of marigold flowers, and a volleyball court, the Burari ground in Delhi that farmers had earlier called an ‘open jail’ has now evolved into a site fairly distinct from other protests at the borders, albeit much smaller in size. When farmers had arrived at Singhu and Tikri borders, authorities had asked them to move the protest to the Burari ground instead of heading towards Jantar Mantar or Ramlila Maidan. While most farmers then decided to remain put at the borders — saying authorities wanted to push them into a corner — about 400 eventually moved to the Burari ground. Pointing to a volleyball net tied between a branch and a tent, Jagdeep Singh (24) from Punjab’s Faridkot said on Tuesday, “A sewadar f...

Germany agrees to extend coronavirus lockdown until Jan 31 – Times of India

BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that she has agreed with state governors to extend the country's current lockdown by three weeks until Jan. 31. Merkel said they also are tightening curbs on social contacts, in line with measures imposed at the beginning of the pandemic in March. And they called for new restrictions on movement for people living in areas with particularly high infection rates. The decision came as new coronavirus cases and deaths are running at stubbornly high levels, and officials remain uncertain what effect the Christmas and New Year holidays have had on the situation. Germany launched a nationwide partial shutdown on Nov. 2, closing restaurants, bars, leisure and sports facilities. That failed to reduce infection figures, and the current lockdown...

Amid rain, langar organisers at Singhu visit each tractor to deliver food: ‘No one should go hungry’

With the capital witnessing rainfall over the past few days, langar organisers at the Singhu border have been going to trucks and trolleys to deliver food to farmers. On Monday night, some farmers went around on their tractors with handheld loudspeakers, asking if anyone needed food. In a video from the site, a few people from the langars can be heard saying: “It should not happen that people don’t eat because they think they will get wet or their clothes will get dirty. None of my brothers should sleep hungry. The prashad will reach your tractor trolleys. It is very cold, no one should go hungry.” Jagjit Singh (70) from Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib said, “Some people in tractors were taking a round, asking if we wanted food. We did not want any as we had eaten already.” At lea...

Nirav’s sister, her husband opt for pardon, to testify against him

FUGITIVE DIAMOND jeweller Nirav Modi’s younger sister and brother-in-law will be witnesses against him in two cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after a special court on Monday allowed their application for grant of pardon. Last month, Purvi Mehta and her husband, Maiank Mehta, had filed applications before the court stating that they wanted to distance themselves from Nirav Modi, and could provide “substantial and important evidence” relevant to him and his dealings. Purvi, a Belgian national, and Maiank, a British national, submitted that their personal and professional lives had come to a “standstill” because of Nirav Modi’s “alleged criminal activities”. They sought to be examined as witnesses in the two cases of money laundering filed by the ED, saying the...

India vs Australia: Coach Langer expects Smith to break lean run in Sydney | Cricket News – Times of India

"I don't coach Steve Smith. Steve Smith coaches himself." These were Australian coach Justin Langer's words on Tuesday when asked about what he was doing to address the uncharacteristic run of low scores that Australia's No. 4 is currently registering. Langer's statement illustrates the supreme confidence that the Australian dressing room seems to share of Smith turning things around. Among the top-3 batsmen in Test cricket with an average of 61.33, the 31-year-old has had far from ideal returns in the two Tests with dismissals for 1, 0 and 8 in Adelaide and Melbourne. It has caused a big surprise simply because such scores have been a rare occurrence since Smith's rebooting as a Test batsman in 2013. He had started the Australian summer with two 62-ball tons in the ODI series against I...

Battling virus surge, UK PM calls off R-Day visit; no call on new guest yet

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday called up Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed “regret” that he would not be able to visit India to be Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations. Johnson took this decision in view of the fresh national lockdown in his country, as his government responded to the new, more contagious mutant strain of the novel coronavirus. Indian government sources said Modi “conveyed his understanding of the exceptional situation and hoped that the UK would overcome Covid challenges successfully”. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working towards deepening bilateral relationship, the sources said. India has to now look for an alternative Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations, which may, however, be truncated on acco...

Misbah wouldn’t get a coaching job with a school team, lashes out Aaqib Javed | Cricket News – Times of India

KARACHI: Pakistan's former pacer Aaqib Javed has lashed out at current national team head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, saying he wouldn't get a coaching job even with a school side. Misbah is not suitable for the top job, Aaqib, who is presently the chief coach of Lahore Qalandars franchise in Pakistan Super League (PSL), told reporters in Lahore on Tuesday. "I think the people who gave the coaching jobs to Misbah and Waqar Younis should be held accountable as both of these former players don't have any coaching experience," he said. The former player was speaking after Pakistan suffered their second successive Test defeat in New Zealand. He pointed out that playing cricket and coaching a team are two different things and coaching in modern-day cricket is a job for people with the right qualifi...

Two vaccines — Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Covishield, a variant of Oxford AstraZeneca’s AZD1222 manufactured under licence by the Serum Institute of India — got regulatory approval for restricted use in emergency situation on Sunday. “The national dry run (on Saturday) looked at four areas: testing operational feasibility of Co-WIN (software platform) in largescale use; assessing li...

Central Vista gets Supreme Court’s all-clear: 2-1 verdict says no infirmity

Rejecting arguments of petitioners who “enthusiastically called upon us to venture into territories that are way beyond the contemplated powers of a constitutional court”, the Supreme Court Tuesday gave its go-ahead to the government’s Central Vista redevelopment plan, upholding modifications in land use for the project and environmental clearance recommendations. The project in the heart of New Delhi envisages construction of a new Parliament complex, buildings for central ministries, a new enclave for the Vice President, a new office and residence for the Prime Minister, among others. In a 2-1 ruling while disposing of a clutch of petitions which had raised objections, Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari, in their majority decision, said: “We hold that there is ...

Venkaiah Naidu for bridging STEM gender divide

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said that while India produces the highest percentage of women STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Management) graduates in the world — about 40 percent — their share in jobs these categories in the country is very low — 14 per cent. Speaking at IMSc, Chennai, Naidu said that due to the government’s efforts, the number of girl students in IITs has increased from 8 percent in 2016 to nearly 20 percent now. He also lauded the Centre’s ‘Women Scientists’ programme that encourages women to take up careers in science and maths. He said the New Education Policy (NEP-2020) sought to bridge the rigid separation between arts and sciences and that it was important to build on the idea. Source link
