NEW DELHI: Amavasya, the day of new moon, holds great significance in Hindu tradition. The day of Amavasya is believed to be the most auspicious. Many Hindu festivals and observances are held on the day of Amavasya such as – Mauni Amavasya, Shani Jayanti, Vat Savitri Vrat, Bhaumvati Amavasya, Lakshmi puja (Diwali), Hariyali Amavasya, and Mahalaya Amavasya (Pitru Paksha).

The Vat Savitri Vrat is mostly popular in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.
